W: Well, exactly. Why on earth did you choose that restaurant? I told you it looked expensive.
M: Oh, come on! It didn’t cost all that much. And how much did you pay for that carpet last week? 65 dollars!
W: Yes. But I bought it for my mom. And it was a real bargain.
M: But it was something for yourself. I didn’t blame you, did I?
W: Look, let’s not argue about it. The important thing now is to be more careful and make our money last till Sunday. We can’t ask any money from our parents. I think we should take whatever money we’ve got left, put it together and share it. We’ll work out how much we have to spend each day on food and drink. The hotel is already paid for so we don’t have to worry about that.

When I was a little girl, a couple in our community went through a tragedy. They lost a young child and were in deep despair. Shortly afterward, my mother ran into the father at the local supermarket. He turned to my mother and said, “Your husband saved our life. He was the one more than anyone else who helped us get through this incredible loss. "
My mother wanted to know what message of solace was given to lift them from the depths of despair. So back at home, she asked my father about their conversation numerous times, but my father insisted that he had said nothing.
A few weeks later the couple came over to our home. After sitting down for a few minutes, my mother gently said, “You told me that my husband helped you the most when you went through your awful sadness. What did he say? "
“Rebbetzin, you husband did not say one word. He just came over to our home and walked over to me without saying anything. And then he reached over to me, took my hands into his and hugged me. I looked up and saw tears falling from his eyes. You cannot imagine what that felt like.
Your husband felt my pain. I was not sitting alone with my suffering. "
My mother was quiet, absorbing the message this man was giving.
“No, your husband did not speak. I didn't need him to give me words. I needed his heart and soul."
When I recall this story, I realize the truth.
When having someone in our lives who is going through difficult, we are often at a loss. What do we say? How do we make it all better? What is the greatest git we can give to our loved ones?
We tend to think that we must fill space with words. But when you want to give of yourself, give a listening heart. Sometimes a person in pain needs you to stay silent. Just now that you are there for them. Perhaps you can't fix anything or take away the pain, but you can feel it. With the silence comes sympathy, understanding and empathy. And you share the load.
    24. What does the underlined word “solace" in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Appreciation. B. Guidance. C. Inspiration. D. Comfort.
    25. How did my father help the man get over his sorrow?
    A. By keeping him company calmly.
    B. By crying together with him loudly.

    D. By hugging him to share extreme sadness.
    26. How might my mother feel after hearing the man's words?
    A. Surprised. B. Annoyed. C. Disappointed. D. Satisfied.
    27. What can be learned from the text?

根据第二段“So back at home, she asked my father about their conversation numerous times, but my father insisted that he had said nothing.”(所以回到家里,她多次问我父亲他们的谈话,但我父亲坚持说他什么也没说。)

And you share the load.”(但是当你想奉献自己的时候,要有一颗倾听的心。

Maijlis Jonsson is a 73-year-old living in the centre of Sweden's capital Stockholm. She leads an active life with her friends, travelling around the city and meeting in coffee shops. However, one issue causes her stress.
Sweden has been steadily moving towards a completely cashless society for a number of years. Cash is now used in less than one in five of all cash transactions(交易) in stores—half the number as five years ago. The law says shops can refuse to accept cash. Life can be hard for those unwilling or unable to adapt to the changes. Not everyone hates cash. Majlis Jonsson is one such person. She must go to a bank in order to pay her friend back for a train ticket bought digitally. “I just don't know how to do it."
Niklas Arvidsson, Sweden's leading expert on the payment system, acknowledges that some people are in danger of being left behind, like the elderly. “We've also got a problem with smaller businessmen in rural areas where perhaps the telecommunication systems are not working," he says.
Is Sweden benefiting from all this? According to Arvidsson, it is. “Electronic transactions are quicker and cost less in general and make the payment system more efficient." He also points out that “it is a little bit more difficult in general for the people to get away with not paying taxes or making small thefts without cash."
Of course, with an increase in digital transactions, the question of data security comes into play. As we freefall through an increasingly virtual world—and payments over the cloud instead of payments with paper—who has access to our information? It is a global problem with no easy solution.
But Arvidsson remains largely positive about cashless transactions. “It's like a virtual infrastructure is being built... if a highway or a railroad has the capacity to bring people in business closer and increase output, the same thing will happen with technology. I really do believe that once the technology genie is out of the bottle, how do you put it back?"
    28. What upsets Majlis Josson?
    A. She has to pay without cash.
    B. She owes her friend some money.
    C. She has to draw money from the bank.
    D. She knows little about the mobile phone.
    29. What's mentioned by Arvidsson as an advantage of digital transactions?
    A. They help reduce some illegal acts.
    B. They make paying taxes convenient.
    C. They improve telecommunication systems.
    D. They save the cost of printing paper money.
    30. According to the text, what problem will digital transactions bring about?
    A. They will charge extra fees.
    B. They will stimulate overspend.
    C. They will pose a threat to data security.
    D. They will destroy the computer system.
    31. How does Aridsson show the importance of technology?
    A. By using study results.
    B. By providing examples.
    C. By making a comparison.
    D. By quoting a famous saying.
A 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据第二段“Sweden has been steadily moving towards a completely cashless society for a number of years. Majlis Jonsson is one such person.”(多年来,瑞典一直在稳步走向一个完全无现金的社会。现在,在商店的现金交易中,只有不到五分之一使用现金,这个数字是五年前的一半。法律规定商店可以拒收现金。对于那些不愿或不能适应变化的人来说,生活可能很艰难。不是每个人都讨厌现金。Majlis Jonsson就是其中之一。)可知,使Majlis Jonsson烦恼的是,她无法用现金支付,故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段“According to Arvidsson, it is. He also points out that “it is a little bit more difficult in general for the people to get away with not paying taxes or making small thefts without cash."”(具Arvidsson所说,确实是。他还指出,“一般来说,没有现金使得那些不缴税却能逃脱惩罚以及偷窃的行为更难。”)可知,Arvidsson指出数字交易的一个好处就是有助于减少一些违法行为,故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Of course, with an increase in digital transactions, the question of data security comes into play.”(当然,随着数字交易的增加,数据安全的问题开始显现。)
根据最后一段“But Arvidsson remains largely positive about cashless transactions. “It's like a virtual infrastructure is being built...if a highway or a railroad has the capacity to bring people in business closer and increase output, the same thing will happen with technology."”(但是 Arvidsson仍然对无现金交易持积极态度。“这就像一个虚拟的基础设施正在建设......如果一条高速公路或铁路有能力拉近人们在商业上的距离并增加产出,同样的事情也会发生在技术上。”)可知,Arvidsson将科技与公路和铁路作比较,说明了科技的重要性,故选C。

Older adults often suffer from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) It is defined as the stage between cognitive decline that comes naturally with aging and the more serious decline in brain performance—dementia (痴呆), MCI affects many aspects of cognition, such as memory, language, judgment and thinking.
Modern treatment for MCI and dementia involve mostly medications that are yet to be proven effective. But there are natural ways for individuals with MCI to improve their condition. Cognitive training, for instance, can help them develop their remaining cognitive skills. Improving their cardiovascular fitness can also lower their risk of further brain damage caused by blockage of blood vessels.
But in recent study, researchers at RMIT University in Australia found yet another way to boost cognitive function without using modern medications. By evaluating clinical evidence presented by multiple studies, the researchers found that traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) can cause positive changes in the brains of adults with MCI. They reported their findings in an article published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a sensitive measure used to evaluate changes in cognitive function. MoCA is often used to test the effects of TCM on people with MCI. The researchers selected a total of 19 studies, 16 of which contributed to data analyses. Three studies were placebo-controlled (安慰剂对照), while nine compared a TCM herb with conventional medication. Three studies combined a TCM with a modern drug, and one study combined a known TCM with cognitive training. In two of the placebo-controlled studies, which lasted for 24 weeks, TCM herbs produced favorable results at the end of treatment. Overall, results suggested that certain TCM formulations can improve MoCA scores by 1.76 to 2.34 points.
Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that TCM herbs, owing to their active components, can improve cognitive function in people with MCI.
    32. What's the main reason the elderly suffer from MCI?
    A. Mental decline. B. Aging. C. Cancer. D. Hearing loss.
    33. Which is the natural way to improve MCI in the elderly?
    A. Cognitive training.
    B. TCM with cognitive training.
    C. Traditional Chinese medicine.

上文“If you have an uphill hike, you may be worried about how your body will hold up over mile after mile. There are a few things you can do to keep the experience from being a painful one.(如果你高山徒步旅行,你可能会担心你的身体会如何坚持一英里又一英里。你可以做几件事来避免这个经历成为一个痛苦的经历)”可知,此处说的是可以做些事让身体适应高山远足。因此推断E项“一点训练,良好的计划和坚强的意志都会有所帮助。”符合上下文语境,解释上文提到的a few things。故选E。
    【37题详解】
上一句“And if you'll be carrying a backpack, your upper body also plays a big part.(如果你要背着一个背包,你的上半身也起着很大的作用)”说明背背包需要上半身工作,下文的“besides”说明空格处于下文是并列关系,下文“Besides, you'll need arm and shoulder strength to get your pack on and off.(此外,你还需要手臂和肩膀的力量来背起和放下你的背包)”说明手臂和肩膀也参与工作,因此推断D项“你需要核心肌肉来背背包好几个小时”符台上下文语境,与下文内容共同解释上文背背包这个动作。故选D。
上一句“Depending on the length of the hike you're planning, you might increase your training.(根据你计划的徒步旅行时间的长度,你或许会增加训练)”说明要计划增强训练,下一句“If your hike will be very steep, you might add some stair sets to your workout. You can do these at home or go to a facility like a stadium that has a lot of stairs for extended climbs.(如果你的徒步旅行是非常陡峭的,你可以在你的锻炼中增加一些楼梯设置。你可以在家里做这些,或者去一个有很多楼梯的体育场)”说明要计划楼梯训练,因此推断空格出也要讲述计划训练,B项“安排每天散步或慢跑的时间”符合上下文语境,说明要计划好训练时间。故选B。
    【39题详解】
下一句“If you've been jogging for twenty minutes, try alternating one day of longer jogging with a hilly hike while wearing a backpack.(如果你已经慢跑了20分钟,试着在背着背包的同时进行一次山地徒步旅行,累积到40分钟)”可知此处说的是要增加训练的强度,因此推断F项“所以是时候增加你的训练强度来增强力量了。” F项中的“increase the difficulty”与上文的“longer jogging”呼应。故选F。
下一句“Chances are that once you get moving, you'll be more interested in keeping on until you finish.(很有可能,一旦你开始行动,你会更感兴趣,直到你完成)”说明开始就可能会感兴趣,坚持到完成,因此推断G项“你应该向自己保证至少你会开始锻炼”符合上下文语境。G项中的“get started”与上文的“get moving”呼应,故选G。

As mountains go, 1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn't particularly impressive. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming content among its steep, slippery cliff's (悬崖), resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.
Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak's record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the splendid view; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking over the lip of the high cliff with her husband.
When Grant's mother rejoined him, the two headed down the trail. Suddenly, he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!" a man yelled. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She'd fallen off the side of the mountain.
Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant decided to lend a hand. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, Grand walked off the trail alone.
After 15 minutes of climbing over very large rocks, pushing past sharp brush, and slipping down patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a kneeling position on a small rocky outcropping The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Incredibly, she was alive.
“Paula!" Grant shouted.“ Paula. Is that you?"
The woman hardly responded. Grant called 911 to report her location. He waited where he was for a bit, but she kept trying to move, and every time she moved, she slipped a little more. Afraid that in her confused state of mind she might fall off the outcropping to her death, Grant crawled on all fours up a tight, narrow path, gaining traction (牵引力) by digging into the dirt with his fingers and feet until he reached Paula.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    【答案】One possible version:
She was moaning and hardly making sense. Her head, arms, and legs were bleeding. Apparently, she suffered severe injuries when falling 75 feet off. At this sight, Grant sprang into action. Securing himself against a tree, Grant gently put her hand in his and tried to keep her mind off the pain by keeping asking her questions: “Where are you from? What do you do for a living? Do you have kids?” Anxious and hopeful, they stayed together, waiting for rescue to come.
About 45 minutes later, the rescuers arrived at the top of the mountain. To reach them, a rescuer climbed down a rope and secured Paula to a stretcher. Rescuers at the top lifted the stretcher to the top and then carried her to a waiting ambulance. Eventually, Paula and her husband were flown by helicopter to a hospital. Meanwhile, Grant was helped back on the top of the mountain with his mother, who felt very proud that he had helped save a life and turn a moment of despair into hope.
