hpes t cmmercialize the suitcase and a pilt scheme (试验计划) is planned t use it in an
airprt, a shpping mall and ther public spaces. “Thugh the suitcase is t full f tech t hld
any clthes, that culd change in the future,” she says.
A runner, Asakawa, held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at the age f
11 caused her t gradually lse her sight until, aged 14, she became ttally blind. As a grwn-up

Page Reader”, the first vice brwser t allw Internet access fr blind peple. Asakawa has wn

drs fr blind peple, because we’d be able t g anywhere by urselves. Withut new
technlgy, we cannt make ur sciety mre inclusive (包容的),” Asakawa says. “A smart

My dad desn’t seem like the kind f guy wh wuld bake great bread, but he is and he
des. Every Saturday he prduces hmemade bread. When he’s dne, the whle huse smells
    delicius.
The rest f the week, Dad fixes cars at wrk. The shp where Dad wrks is running s well
that he is always ccupied. He is under a lt f stress. I think Dad began baking bread t help
    him relax.
I’ve been feeling kind f stressed ut myself since I fund ut I didn’t make the schl swim
team. Nw I’ll have t wait a whle year t try ut again. Plus, I’m taking sme difficult classes
    this year.
I think Dad knew I was feeling bad. Last Saturday he asked me hw things were ging. I
said OK, even thugh I didn’t feel OK at all. He lked at me fr a mment, and then he said it
was time fr me t help. Then he headed t the kitchen.
I fllwed right behind him. Once we were there, Dad gt ut his big mixing bwl, handed
me a large wden spn, and tld me t mix while he added the ingredients. Dad isn’t big n
measuring. He knws hw much f each ingredient t use, and the bread always turns ut great.
When I finished stirring, Dad shwed me hw t knead the dugh (揉面团). Next came the
mst difficult part— ding nthing. We put the dugh back int the bwl and then we waited
fr mre than an hur fr the dugh t slwly rise and duble in size. Next, we divided it int
tw and waited fr it t rise again. Afterward, we put the dugh int pans and waited anther
hur fr the dugh t rise and duble.
Dad said the waiting is always the hardest part. “It’s hard t resist putting the dugh directly
int the ven, but if yu d, the bread will be hard. The mst imprtant lessn f all is learning
t be.” Dad taught me mre than hw t bake bread.

    Accrding t the US ecnmist Rbert Grdn, all the “impressive stuff” has been created;
we have run ut f the big, life-changing ideas needed t encurage rapid ecnmic grwth and
engineers are nw nly just making slight changes. Inventins such as mbile phnes, Grdn
says, have had less impact than, fr example, the inventin f indr plumbing (管道系统).
But this is a misunderstanding f hw engineers wrk. There is n “Ww!” mment. The
develpment f new technlgy happens little by little. Yu build upn the wrk f thse befre
yu, thinking abut what culd be dne better and what culd be imprved. It’s an unending task.
Michael Faraday invented the first electric mtr. But Faraday’s breakthrugh fllwed William
Sturgen’s inventin f the electrmagnet (电磁铁), and Alessandr Vlta’s inventin f the
battery befre that. Faraday wuld have expected future engineers t pick up the batn (接力棒)
    later dwn the line.
Reduced energy supplies, increasing ppulatins and mass urbanizatin keep clever yung
engineers awake at night. Thse, fr example, wh enter the yearly James Dysn Award invent
things that slve these prblems and mre. The 2012 winner Dan Watsn designed a clever
system f escape rings fr fishing bat nets that deals with the issue f verfishing— nt an
exciting tpic, but his inventin is exceptinal. Human inventiveness remains unreduced in the
    face f new glbal challenges.
Our prblem is patience. We expect new technlgy at a rate like never befre. I can’t ell
yu the wrld’s next big inventin. Last week brught news that we’ve invented a new way t
deal with antibitic-resistant bacteria. Next week may bring a majr develpment in anther field.
The biggest thing hlding inventin back is ur impatience. With enugh time and supprt, bright
yung engineers will develp exciting new technlgy t slve the wrld’s trickiest prblems.
    Many have already begun.
    32. Why des the authr mentin what Rbert Grdn says?
    A. T intrduce the tpic.
    B. T illustrate a new inventin.
    C. T prvide backgrund infrmatin.
    D. T express his pinin abut the tpic.
    33. What can we infer frm Michael Faraday’s example?
    第 6页(共 10页)

    A. New technlgy has been develping step by step.
    B. New inventins fail t deal with new glbal challenges.
    C. Michael Faraday set a gd mdel fr William Sturgen.
    D. Technlgy helps future engineers achieve success smthly.
    34. What makes Dan Watsn’s inventin excellent?
    A. His yung age.
    B.
    His patience with technlgy.
    C. His effrt t slve real wrld prblems.
    D. His wish t win the James Dysn Award.
    35. Which wrd best describes the authr’s attitude t technlgical develpment nwadays?
    A. Dubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Disapprving. D. Optimistic.
    第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为
    多余选项。
Fr mst peple, life has becme a burden n their shulders, and its weight is grwing
heavier and heavier, until ne day they can’t carry it anymre. S hw can we design a life that
is less cmplex and mre meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义).
    36
    The fllwing
ways will assist yu in yur jurney t living a simper yet fuller life.
    37
Mst peple’s living space is filled with things that are never used and dn’t
cntribute t their well-being. Separate the nes yu d need frm the nes yu dn’t, and thrw
the latter right int the dustin— r better, give them away t peple wh might actually benefit
    frm them.
Appreciate all the amazing things yu already have. We cnstantly cmpare urselves t
thers wh seem happier, mre beautiful and mre imprtant than us. We try ur best t imitate
    thse we envy.
    38
We need t stp cmparing and accept urselves fr wh we are, with
all ur imperfectins. Take a mment t appreciate what yu have.
D ne thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the mst ut f each and
every mment. We’re usually carrying ut different tasks at the same time. S whatever we are
ding, ur mind is partly wndering smewhere else.
    39
Develp mindfulness. 40 Thus yu need t develp mindfulness. Mindfulness
means fully attending t what’s happening in the present. There are many ways ne can d s.
Perhaps the mst cmmn way is t sit fr abut 30 minutes smewhere cmfrtably with yur
upper back straight and pay full attentin t yur breath as it’s cming in and ut thrugh yur
nse. In this way, yu wn’t be distracted by yur thughts.
    A. It is abut enjying life mre with less.
    B. Stp cnsuming prducts yu dn’t need.
    C. Yet n matter hw much we try, we always fail.
    D. Get rid f things that dn’t serve yur happiness.
    E. minimalist living requires a calm and undisturbed mind.
    F. Stp multitasking and cncentrate n a single thing at a time.
    G. Unfrtunately, ur minds are filled with wrries in ur busy lives.
