B
Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet(子弹) — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
41. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
A. He faced huge risks.
B. He lacked mighty forces.
C. Fear prevented him from trying.
D. Failure blocked his way to success.
42. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
A. Swallow more than you can digest.
B. Act slightly above your abilities.
C. Develop more mysterious powers.
D. Learn to make creative decisions.
43. What was especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football game?
A. His physical strength.
B. His basic skill.
C. His real fear.
D. His spiritual force.
44. What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life.
D. Boldness can be gained little by little.

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.
For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved
In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.
In adulthood the things that bring deep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).
My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.
I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband come home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.
Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this what satisfied her.
We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.
Happiness isn’t about what happens to—it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have , but enjoying what we do possess.
46. As people grow older, they ____.
A. feel it harder to experience happiness
B. associate their happiness less with others
C. will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness
D. tend to believe responsibility means happiness
47. What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 5 and 6?
A. She cares little about her own health.
B. She enjoys the freedom of traveling.
C. She is easily pleased by things in daily life.
D. She prefers getting pleasure from housework.
48. What can be inferred from Paragraph 7?
A. Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness.
B. Psychologists’ opinion is well proved by Grandma’s case.
C. Grandma often found time for social gatherings.
D. Grandma’s happiness came from modest expectations of life.
49. People who equal happiness with wealth and success ______.
A. consider pressure something blocking their way
B. stress their right to happiness too much
C. are at a loss to make correct choices
D. are more likely to be happy
50. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Happiness lies between the positive and the negative
B. Each man is the master of his own fate.
C. Success leads to happiness.
D. Happy is he who is content.
A 47. C 48. D 49. B 50. D

通过第二、三、四段的描述“For kids, happiness has a magical quality. ”(对孩子们来说,幸福有一种神奇的特质。)“In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. ”(在青少年时期,幸福的概念发生了变化。)“For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).”(对于成年人来说,幸福是复杂的)可知,儿时的梦想很简单,青少年时幸福的概念就换了,而成年时幸福就变得复杂了,因此随着年龄的增长,人们发现体会幸福越来越难了。故选A。
根据第五段“The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. ”(我们越享受自己拥有的,我们就会越幸福);第六段“I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. ”(昨天我经历了一段小小的快乐时光。)作者用自己的体验叙述了作者经历的小小的幸福的时刻。因此可从第五、六段知道,作者很容易因生活中的一些小事而感到幸福。故选C。
3. 细节理解题。第七段“ I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this what satisfied her.”(我认为我那养育了14个孩子的祖母,这两样都没有。
根据第八段“We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have.
D
The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphone, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的)skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful---both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to know well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe(转换)“those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct then over time.
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”
51. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?
A. The absence of blackboard in classroom.
B. The use of new technologies in teaching.
C. The lack of practice in handwriting.
D. The popular use of smartphones.
52. Berninger’s study published in 2009 .
A. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer.
B. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper.
C. found that good essays arc made up of long sentences.
D. discussed the importance of writing speed.
53. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?
A. Spelling improves one’s memory of words.
B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.
C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.
D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.
54. What does “mind’s eye” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Window. B. Soul
C. Picture. D. Imagination.
55. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?
A. Computers can help people with their choice of words.
B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching.
C. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms.
D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.
B 52. A 53. B 54. D 55. C
根据第一段“With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphone, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的)skill.(随着像电脑和智能手机的使用,书写已经成为了人们怀旧的东西)。所以教学中使用新技术使得手写成为过去。故选B项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段首句“Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand.(Berninger和她的同事做了个研究,想看看学生用电脑和用手工完成各种写的任务的情况)可知,伯宁格在2009年发表的研究集中在手写和电脑书写的区别上。故选A项。
根据第四段首句“In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to know well they can write.(在更近的一次研究中,Berninge想看看拼写在学生写作技巧中所发挥的什么作用,结果发现字写得好的孩子文章也写得好)。所以拼写能力与写作能力密切相关能说明拼写的作用。故选B项。
【54题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段“Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe(转换)“those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said.”
根据最后一段进一步阐明书写的重要根据最后一段“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”

At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their allowances on candy and toys, Jose Adolfo Quisocola was busy saving money for basic purchases. To try to get his peers (同龄人) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco- bank, the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.
Set up in 2012, the bank is the world's first bank for kids. To become a member, a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograrms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, which, thanks to Jose's efforts, pay a higher - than - market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money, or choose to leave it and make it continue to grow for a bigger target. “At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls. “They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.”
The boy's efforts paid off, and by 2013, the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco - bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach over 3, 000 students, aged 10 to 18, to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment. Not surprisingly, Jose's efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20, 2018, Jose won Children's Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $ 5, 500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.
56. Why did Jose set up the bank? (No more than 10 words)
57. How can a kid be admitted to the eco - bank? (No more than 15 words)
58. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean? (No more than 3 words)
59. What's the fourth paragraph mainly about? (No more than 10 words)
