Does it seem like hotel costs just go up and up? It's true that they rise each year, sometimes significantly. When determining which hotel has the best deal, you don't just want to look at the nightly rate anymore. There are so many other factors to consider to help you save money, both before you book and during your stay. Here are some tips to help you make the best decision.
    Go out to eat
Though room service sounds really appealing, prices for food on the menu can be twice as much as you would pay for the same food at a restaurant. Tips are always included in the tab and usually masked as a delivery charge. Most guests don't know this and add a tip to the bill when the waiter brings their food.
    Ask for a corner room
Though this won't technically save you any money, corner rooms are usually a bit larger than regular rooms, which give you a better deal for your money. Once you check in, ask if one of these rooms is available. This is easier if you show up close to check-in time, but before the flood of guests show up to get their keys. You can also call ahead and request a corner room with your existing reservation.
    Bring your own snacks
Anything is better than the rates for items in the mini bar. The prices are horrible and don't even think about trying to replace it with the same item later.
    Avoid the weekend
Hotels in popular destinations regularly raise their rates on Fridays and Saturdays. In some cases, it can be as much as three times more than Sunday through Thursday nights.
    21. What is the aim of this text?
    A. How to choose a good hotel. B. How to save money.
    C. How to increase the nightly rate. D. How to decrease the tips.
    22. Which service cost you more?
    A. Room service. B. Go out to eat.
    C. Ask for a corner room. D. Bring your own snacks.
    23. When is a good choice to book a hotel?
    A. Fridays. B. Saturdays. C. Sundays. D. Holidays.
    B
On a sunny afternoon, Andreas Fath climbed out of a river in Paducah. A small crowd was on hand to witness his setting a new world record. This man had just finished swimming the entire length of the Tennessee River-1, 049 kilometers. And he did it in just 34 days!
As a chemist from Hochshule Furtwangen University, the 52-year-old man had taken on this swim for science. His primary goal was not to get his name into Guinness World Records. What really drove this swim was a desire to make people aware of the seriousness of water pollution.
Fath's crew included his family. Martin Knoll, who helped organize Fath's swim, also took part. Knoll is an environmental scientist at the University of the South. He describes this swim as a vehicle for getting people interested in water quality and how we pollute water without realizing it.
It took Fath 34 days to swim the river's length. Along the way, his crew took measurements of the water's temperature and pH. They also recorded weather and the speed of the river's currents(涌流). As for the Tennessee River, they collected daily water samples. A small plastic device attached to one leg of Fath's wet suit sampled the chemical pollutants(污染物)through which he swam. Finally, Fath's goal is to use such data to know what on earth results in water pollution. Then he wants to find ways to keep those chemicals out of the water.
Back in Germany, Fath and his students have finished examining their data. They plan to publish their findings soon. Identifying materials that hide in the river isn't only important for the animals that live there. "It's also a way to protect human health," says Fath.
    24. What was the main purpose of Andreas Fath's long swim?
    A. To make history. B. To set a new world record.
    C. To bring attention to water pollution. D. To provide inspiration for scientific research.
    25. What did Martin Knoll think of this long swim?
    A. It was tiring. B. It was painful.
    C. It was interesting. D. It was meaningful.
    26. Why did Andreas Fath and his crew collect data along the way?
    A. To identify the sources of pollution. B. To learn a lot more about the currents.
    C. To know chemicals' effects on water. D. To get pollutants removed from the water.
    27. What is Andreas Fath expected to do next?
    A. Analyze the collected data. B. Get the findings published.
    C. Study how to improve health. D. Identify materials in other rivers.
    C
Have you ever had the pleasure of popping the small air-filled bubbles that make up a sheet of bubble wrap(气泡膜包装)? If so, you know there's something highly satisfying about it. Have you ever wondered why people like bubble wrap so much?
It turns out that there is some science behind the human connection to bubble wrap. Some experts believe it's similar to the need to fidget(坐立不安). Do you click a pen or bounce your leg while you're listening? Maybe you like to draw aimlessly in the corners of your notes or squeeze a stress ball. These small actions are all types of fidgeting.
While some people think fidgeting is distracting, it's actually been shown to increase attention span. It also helps with the memory of information. Similarly, a study revealed that people report feeling more alert after popping bubble wrap.
The results also showed that people who popped bubble wrap were calmer afterward than those who did not. So, like fidgeting, popping bubble wrap may increase people's ability to pay attention and remember what they learn.
Experts also say the enjoyment of bubble wrap may be tied to human evolution. In other words, your brain is wired to enjoy it! Early humans had to be on their toes all the time. They needed to be ready to run from a predator(捕食者)at a moment's notice.
Today, people spend a lot of time sitting, especially at school and at work. As a result, the body may build a lot of muscle tension from lack of movement.
Popping bubble wrap helps relax that muscle tension. It reduces stress and anxiety. In fact, studies have shown that, sometimes, the human brain receives feel-good chemicals like dopamine after popping bubble wrap. So that may be why it feels so satisfying!
    28. According to Paragraph 2, while feeling nervous or bored people probably .
    A. Sit still B. Keep silent C. Bounce the leg D. Chat with others
    29. What does the underlined phrase "on their toes" in paragraph 5 mean?
    A. mindful B. concentrated C. considerate D. aggressive
    30. Which of the following is not the benefit of popping bubble wrap?
    A. It reduces pressure and anxiety. B. It makes people calm and alert.
    C. It increases concentration ability. D. It strengthens people's muscles.
    31. Where does the passage probably come from?
    A. A medical report. B. A science magazine.
    C. A chemistry paper. D. A fashion magazine.
    D
In our daily lives, we spend a lot more time typing on a keyboard than writing with pencil and pen, so does handwriting still offer anything useful?
Researchers tasked 42 adult volunteers with learning the Arabic letters from beginning: Some through writing it out on paper, some through typing it out on a keyboard, and some through watching and responding to video instructions. Those in the handwriting group not only learned the unfamiliar letters more quickly, but they were also better able to apply their new knowledge in other areas-by using the letters to make new words and to recognize words they hadn't seen before, for example.
The real question is: Are there other benefits to handwriting that have to do with reading and spelling and understanding?
While writing, typing, and visual learning were effective at teaching participants to recognize Arabic letters-learners made very few mistakes after six exercise sessions-on average, the writing group needed fewer sessions to get to a good standard.
Researchers then tested the groups to see how the learning could be generalized. In every follow-up test, using skills they hadn't been trained on, the writing group performed the best: naming letters, writing letters, spelling words, and reading words.
While 42 people isn't a huge sample size for a study of this type, the trends reported by the study indicate that pen and paper still have an important role to play in learning, even as digital formats(格式)have come to control our communications. And although adults were used in this particular experiment, the researchers say their findings should have relevance to children too. Several previous studies have also highlighted the advantages of copying as an aid to learning.
Today pupils in schools spend far less time than they used to on handwriting skills and practice, for obvious reasons-but based on what this study shows, it wouldn't be wise to put away the pens and pencils permanently. Because with writing, you're getting a stronger representation in your mind that lets you support other types of tasks that don't in any way involve handwriting.
    32. How did the researchers get the conclusion?
    A. By making comparison. B. By studying document.
    C. By asking volunteers. D. By watching videos.
    33. In which part handwriting performs the best?
    A. Communicating with others. B. Reviewing the previous skills.
    C. Learning a new language. D. Setting an example to kids.
    34. Why do pupils spend less time than they used to on handwriting skills?
    A. They don't like pencils and paper.
    B. The digital tools are more powerful today.
    C. Handwriting has nothing to do with study.
    D. Nobody forces them to practice handwriting skills.
    35. What might be the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Put down your keyboard. B. Pen will replace computers.
    C. Handwriting is out of time now. D. Handwriting is better in learning.

    Mother's Gift
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed(排练)my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's part(旁白员)to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)in the grass in bunches, as if a painter had sprinkled our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. "I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden."
"But I like dandelions, ”I protested. "All flowers are beautiful -even dandelions."
My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. "And that is true of people too," she added. "Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled encouragingly.

    第二节
    Paragraph 1:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as always as she did. My beloved mom, wearing a shining smile on her scarlet face, added. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Thanks to her encouragement, which calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept that the narrator part was of vital significance. Time went so fast that it reached to the performance day. At first I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, which meant to be in company with me.
    Paragraph 2:
After the play, I took home the dandelion. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily as she did. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I constantly recall our precious lunchtimes being together, staying close to each other, bathed in the soft midday light. For this, I am forever grateful, because smiles on mother’s face and her kind act foster a man like me now!.

W: I bet this is the first time you’ve ever flown during the New Year holiday. Well, listen to me. You really need to buy a ticket now.
M: But maybe prices will be cheaper in December.
W: Lower prices won’t do you any good if there are no seats.
    M: You’re right.
    Text 7
W: Good evening. Do you have a reservation?
    M: No, we don’t.
W: How many people are you together?
M: Just two people. My wife is arriving in five minutes.
W: Would you like to sit in a smoking section, a non-smoking section or whatever comes open first?
M: Well, we cannot put up with the smoking. So…
W: I see. But I’m awfully sorry. There are no vacancies in the non-smoking section now. I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for a while.
M: How long do you think I have to wait?
W: About fifteen minutes. We’ll offer you the menu so that you can look at it in advance.
M: Okay. I’m so thirsty. Can you give me a glass of water first?
W: Sure. We always provide free drinks and snacks in the waiting area.
    Text 8
M: Hi, Jennifer. Do you think the weather is too cold lately? Are you preparing to travel abroad?
W: Yes, I’m preparing to travel to some place which is lovely and warm. But I haven’t decided where to go yet.
M: Well, I must say, Sanya or some cities of Thailand are the best choice.
W: I feel the same. I’m wondering whether to go to Thailand. Have you ever been there?
    M: No, I haven’t.
W: Have you ever traveled abroad?
M: Yes. In fact, I was born abroad.
    W: Where were you born?
M: China. I’m not joking. I was made in China. My parents are Americans but I was born in Shanghai.
    W: Can you speak Chinese?
M: No. We moved to Paris when I was young because of my mother’s new job.
W: How old were you then?
    M: I was nine.
W: You were nine years old. And you cannot speak Chinese.
M: No. I was 9 months old. Ha-Ha… But my parents always speak highly of China.
W: Great. It must be very charming. Now I make my mind to travel the country this winter.
    Text 9
M: Nice to meet you. I’m Nicholas. Everyone calls me Nick.
W: Nice to meet you, too. My name is Christina. Well, your accent sounds interesting. Where are you from, Nick, if I may ask?
M: Oh, I come from England.
W: Do you like Manchester United?
M: Mm… Football is not my cup of tea.
W: I see. Why did you come to Chongqing?
M: For vacation. And I’m really having a great time.
W: What do you like the best about here?
M: Well, the people are friendly and hospitable.
W: Yes. Is the food too spicy for you?
M: No. I eat spicy food every day. The hotter the better.
W: How much longer will you stay here?
M: I’ve already been here for 5 days. I guess I’m planning to stay 2 more days. Then I’ll go home. Can I ask where you work?
W: Sure. I work at the bank. And what about you?
M: What a coincidence! I work at the bank as well.
W: Are you also a bank teller?
M: No… Actually I’m the bank’s chairman. Oh, I need to go now. By the way, it’s been a pleasure meeting you.
    Text 10
W: According to the association, China’s national flower should meet the following standards: First, it should originate in China and have a long history. Second, it should be beautiful in shape and color, to represent the Chinese culture and personality. Third, it should have a profound historical culture and be widely known to the public. Finally, it should be extensively used in many fields with an economic value that could benefit the public.
While the peony(牡丹) has gained the greatest support in an online vote to be chosen as China’s national flower. With these bright colors and an elegant image, it is called “King of the Flowers”. It has been a favorite of the Chinese people for quite a long time. Actually it could date back to the Tang Dynasty as the national flower. What’s more, it also has been used as a food and a traditional Chinese herb, which drives the economy.
Many netizens said they didn’t realize that China doesn’t have its own representative flower. In fact, many people said they had already accepted the peony as the national flower years before they saw the vote.
