    Wuthering Heights (Excerpt)
Ellen Dean's stry—Catherine and Heathcliff as children
1770,when I was a child,I was always at Wuthering Heights, because my mther was a servant f the Earnshaw family. They are a very ld family wh have lived in that huse fr centuries,as yu can see frm their names n the stne ver the frnt dr.I grew up with Catherine and Hindley Earnshaw, and we three played tgether as children.
One day, their father Mr.Earnshaw came back frm a lng jurney. He had travelled sixty miles t Liverpl and back n business, and was very tired.
“Lk what I've brught yu!” he tld us all, unwrapping smething he was hlding carefully in his arms.Catherine and Hindley were expecting presents, and they rushed eagerly t see what it was. They were very disappinted t see nly a dirty, blackhaired gipsy child.
“I fund him all alne in the busy streets f Liverpl,”Mr.Earnshaw explained t them,“and I culdn't leave him t die.He can sleep in yur rm.” But Hindley and Catherine were angry because they had nt received any presents, and refused t let the strange child share their rm.Hwever Mr.Earnshaw insisted, and little by little the by became accepted by the family. He was called Heathcliff,as a first and last name.N ne ever discvered wh his parents had been.
Catherine and he became great friends, but Hindley hated him,and was ften cruel t him.Old Mr.Earnshaw was strangely fnd f this gipsy child, and frequently punished his sn fr behaving badly t Heathcliff.Hindley began t be jealus f his father's feelings fr Heathcliff, and saw them bth as enemies.
This situatin culd nt last.As Mr.Earnshaw grew ld and ill,Heathcliff became even mre his favurite, and Hindley ften quarrelled with his father. When Hindley was sent away t study,I hped that we wuld have peace in the huse. But then it was that ld servant Jseph wh caused truble. He tried t persuade his master t be stricter with the children, and was always cmplaining that Heathcliff and Catherine did nt spend enugh time studying the Bible r attending church services.
Catherine was a wild, wicked girl in thse days.We had t watch her every mment f the day,t stp her playing her tricks n us.She was prud, and liked giving rders. But she had the prettiest face and the sweetest smile yu've ever seen.I culd frgive her anything when she came t say she was srry.
She was much t fnd f Heathcliff, and the wrst punishment we culd invent was t keep her separate frm him.Her father culd n lnger understand her r her behaviur, and Catherine did nt realize that his illness made him less patient with her.
At last Mr.Earnshaw fund peace. He died quietly in his chair by the fire ne Octber evening in 1775.The night was wild and strmy, and we were all sitting tgether in the big kitchen.Jseph was reading his Bible at the table, while Catherine had her head n her father's knee.He was pleased t see her s gentle fr nce,and she was singing him t sleep.I was glad the ld gentleman was sleeping s well. But when it was time t g t bed,Catherine put her arms rund her father's neck t say gdnight, and immediately screamed,“Oh,he's dead,Heathcliff! He's dead!”
Heathcliff and I started crying ludly and bitterly t.Jseph tld me t fetch the dctr,s I ran t the village, althugh I knew it was t late. When I came back,I went t the children's rm,t see if they needed me,and I listened fr a mment at their dr.They were imagining the dead man in a beautiful distant place, far frm the trubles f this wrld. And as I listened, crying silently,I culd nt help wishing we were all there safe tgether.
