    Learning objectives

    Teaching key and important points:

    1. Summarize the main idea for each paragraph using newly learned words and expressions.

    2. Use your own words to express your opinions about space exploration.

    Teaching procedure

    Step 1 Warming-up

    Show Ss some pictures about a film The Wondering Earth and ask them three questions.

    Q1: Have you ever seen this film?

    Q2: What’s the story about?

    Q3: Do you believe there are other planets for people to live on?

    Then have a guess, show Ss some pictures about the equipment for space exploration.

    Ask Ss some questions:

    Q1: Do you know some equipment for space exploration?

    Q2: Do you know their functions?

    P1: Space Station     

    It’s a manned satellite designed for scientific research.

    P2: Spacecraft          

    It can travel in outer space.

    P3: Rocket

     It can lift the space shuttle into space.

    Step 2 Pre-reading

    Before you read, look at the title and the photos. Show Ss three pictures and ask some questions.

    The title:

    Space: The Final Frontier(Let Ss translate the title together)Q1: Who’s the astronaut?

    (The words below the picture can hint Ss.)

    Q2: When did he step on the moon?

    Q3: What’s the Challenger?

    Q4: What is Jade Rabbit used for?

    Step 3 While-reading

    Task 1: Read the text. Several sentences have been removed from the text. Choose the correct sentences [A-D] to fill each gap.

    A. Although scientists try to make sure nothing goes wrong, accidents can still happen.

    B. They also really wish to discover other planets that are suitable enough to support life.

    C. The future of space exploration remains bright.

    D. After many experiments, they succeeded in making rockets that could escape Earth's gravity.

    Give Ss 3 minutes to think about why they chose their option and then let Ss state the reasons of why they chose their option. And teacher should give Ss evaluations.

    Task 2 Summarize

    the main idea of each paragraph.
