Teaching Objectives: At the end of this class, students will be able to: 1. Get the main idea of the conversation and choose a topic. 2.Note down some information about Laureus World Sportsman of the year and complete the table. 3.Act out a similar conversation about expressing opinions and giving an explanation. 4.Make a conversation to talk about three Chinese sportspeople for the next Laureus World Sports Awards. Key points: 1.Grasp the main idea and integrate the information while listening. 2.Learn to express opinions. Difficult points: Learn to use proper expressions to express opinions and give an explanation. | ||||||||

min | Step 1 Pre- listening | 1.Students read the passage in Activity 7 individually to get some basic information of the Laureus World Sports Awards and answer the questions raised by teacher. Q:1). What awards does the passage talk about? 2) . What is a sports role model? And who were mentioned as a sports role model in the passage? 3). According to the passage, what does the sport spirit really mean? 2.Teacher asks students read the passage again and work in groups to discuss the question “Who do the Laureus World Sports Awards honour?” in Activity 7. 3.Teacher encourages students to share other sports role models that they know. If necessary, teacher can provide some examples. | ||||||
min | Step 2 Listening for main idea | 1.Students read the four topics in Activity 8 and predict what the audio talks about. Meanwhile focus on and underline the similarities in each choice. 2.Teacher plays the audio for the first time.Students listen to the conversation and choose a topic for it. Share answers and check whether the prediction is right. | ||||||
Step 3 Listening for detailed informa- tion | 1.Students read the table in Activity 9 and try to predict the content of the blanks. 2.Teacher plays the audio twice and students listen and note down the information quickly. If necessary, teacher plays the audio for the third time. Teacher plays the audio in three parts and asks students to check up the answer in class. | |||||||

| Step 4 Listening for speaking
| 1. Teacher shows students the script of the conversation on screen and play the audio again. Students follow the audio and read it aloud, paying attention to useful expressions. 2. Students read useful expressions and sentences from the script on screen. 3. Teacher asks students to complete the boxes with the expressions from the conversation in Activity 9 to get to know how to express opinions and give an explanation.Teacher leads students to check the answers together and adds some other useful expressions. | ||||||

Step 5 Speaking | Teacher encourages students to work in pairs and nominate three Chinese sportspeople for the next Laureus World Sports Awards and give their reasons by using the expressions in Activity 10. Meanwhile teacher offers criteria to evaluate students’ performance. | ||||||
min | Step 6 Summary | 1.Teacher encourages students to list out the useful expressions they have learned in class. 2.Teacher asks students to talk about if someone can be nominated for the next Laureus, what qualities or spirit he or she should have. | ||||||
