Students complete Activity1 on Page56 to arouse interest. Students share answers and discuss what other behaviors they know plants can do to check students’ background knowledge.
Students read the passage again and find out the ways in which plants communicate. Feedback: Plants can communicate with each other by using chemicals, sounds and “wood wide web”.
(1) What figure of speech is being used when the plants are described as calling for help? What is its function? (2) What does “wood wide web” mean? (3) What do you think are the benefits of studying plant communication? (4) What discoveries are described in the two reading passages in this unit and what do their meanings have in common? Feedback: (1) Personification, which means giving human characteristics to something that is not human. By using human characteristics to describe an object, animal or even a place, personification can make descriptions more vivid. (2) “Wood wide web” means an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. It is linked underground by fungi and this fungal network links roots of different plants to each other. Using the roots of different plants can share information and even food with each other. (3) Students’ own answers. (4) Passage 1 reveals the discovery of evolution and Passage 2 reveals the discovery of communication between plants. They all reflect that there are numerous secrets in nature that remain to be explored.
Clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. Let animals and plants live happily and harmoniously with us! Let’s answer the call of our country to advocate harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and stick to the path of green and sustainable development.
