    three basic elements
    character plt setting
Please read the passage carefully and find the plt and pay attentin t the characters and the setting. Highlight the key wrds while reading.
What are the basic elements f a nvel?
    Reading fr the plt
1 Once when I was six years ld I saw a magnificent picture in a bk, called True Stries frm Nature, abut the primeval frest. It was a picture f a ba cnstrictr in the act f swallwing an animal. Here is a cpy f the drawing.
The plt: I drew a cpy f the drawing in a bk, in which a ba cnstrictr was swallwing an animal.
2 In the bk it said: “Ba cnstrictrs swallw their prey whle, withut chewing it. After that they are nt able t mve, and they sleep thrugh the six mnths that they need fr digestin.” 3 I pndered deeply, then, ver the adventures f the jungle. And after sme wrk with a clred pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It lked like this:
The plt: I drew a picture f the ba cnstrictr with the prey inside.
4 I shwed my masterpiece t the grwn-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.5 But they answered: “Frighten? Why shuld anyne be frightened by a hat?”
The plt: Grwn-ups thught what I drew was a hat.
6 My drawing was nt a picture f a hat. It was a picture f a ba cnstrictr digesting an elephant. But since the grwn-ups were nt able t understand it, I made anther drawing: I drew the inside f the ba cnstrictr, s that the grwn-ups culd see it clearly. They always need t have things explained. My Drawing Number Tw lked like this:
The plt: The grwn-ups didn’t understand my picture, s I drew anther ne t shw what was inside.
7 The grwn-ups’ respnse, this time, was t advise me t lay aside my drawings f ba cnstrictrs, whether frm the inside r the utside, and devte myself instead t gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age f six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter.
The plt: The grwn-ups let me devte myself t my schl subjects when they saw the truth but they didn’t pursue true understanding.
I had been disheartened by the failure f my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Tw. Grwn-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresme fr children t be always and frever explaining things t them.
8 S then I chse anther prfessin, and learned t pilt airplanes. I have flwn a little ver all parts f the wrld; and it is true that gegraphy has been very useful t me. At a glance I can distinguish China frm Arizna. If ne gets lst in the night, such knwledge is valuable.
The plt: I gave up drawing and learned t be a pilt.
9 In the curse f this life, I have had a great many encunters with a great many peple wh have been cncerned with matters f cnsequence. I have lived a great deal amng grwn-ups. I have seen them intimately, clse at hand. And that hasn’t much imprved my pinin f them.
The plt: Grwn-ups were all cncerned with matters f cnsequence.
10 Whenever I met ne f them wh seemed t me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment f shwing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I wuld try t find ut, s, if this was a persn f true understanding. But, whever it was, he, r she, wuld always say:11 “That is a hat.”
The plt: I tried t find if there was a persn f true understanding, but I failed.
12 Then I wuld never talk t that persn abut ba cnstrictrs, r primeval frests, r stars, I wuld bring myself dwn t his level. I wuld talk t him abut bridge, and glf, and plitics, and neckties. And the grwn-up wuld be greatly pleased t have met such a sensible man.
The plt: I had t give up my experiment and talked abut what they culd understand.
    Reading fr the characters
I shwed my masterpiece t the grwn-ups, and ... Whenever I met ne f them wh seemed t me at all clear-sighted ...
    The characters: I, grwn-ups, ne f the grwn-ups
... “Frighten? Why shuld anyne be frightened by a hat?”They always need t have things Grwn-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresme fr children t be always and frever explaining things t advise me t lay aside my drawings ... devte myself instead t gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar ...
    Reading fr the setting
    lack imaginatin
cncerned with matters f cnsequence, nt pursuing true understanding
Whenever I met ne f them wh seemed t me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment f shwing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I wuld try t find ut, s, if this was a persn f true understanding. But, whever it was, he, r she, wuld always say: “That is a hat.”
The grwn-ups were nt clear-sighted and didn’t pursue true understanding.
    Read & Think
    1. Chse the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups and find evidence t supprt yur chice.2. What des the authr really mean by the sentences?3. What figure f speech des the authr use? Hw des this figure f speech help t express the authr’s attitude?
    1) Grwn-ups are mre practical than children. They want t teach children knwledge that will be useful in the future.2) Grwn-ups are n better than children. They lack imaginatin and nly care abut matters f cnsequence.3) Grwn-ups are mre knwledgeable than children. They can understand everything by themselves.
    1. Find ut he authr’s attitude and the evidence.
Para 5: But they answered: “Frighten? Why shuld anyne be frightened by a hat?”Para 7: Grwn-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresme fr children t be always and frever explaining things t them.Para 9: In the curse f this life, I have had a great many encunters with a great many peple wh have been cncerned with matters f cnsequence.
    My answer is: 2)
    2. What des the authr really mean by these sentences?Sentence 1: “I have had a great many encunters with a great many peple wh have been cncerned with matters f cnsequence.”Sentence 2: “And the grwn-up wuld be greatly pleased t have met such a sensible man.”
These sentences mean: Mst f the adults he had met were the same. They fcused n practical matters nly and seldm paid attentin t imaginatin r creativity. If the authr pretended t think the way they did, the adults wuld cnclude that he was sensible and mature.
Irny. This figure f speech enables the authr t indicate his lw pinin f adults’ behaviur and values by stressing such things.
    3. What figure f speech des the authr use? Hw des this figure f speech help t express the authr’s attitude?
    learning t learn
Irny is a subtle figure f speech that refers t things ne says that are the ppsite f what ne really means. It has a humrus, emphatic r sarcastic effect. Fr example: Fine, dn’t buy me an airline ticket, I’ll just swim acrss the cean!
    Vice yur pinin.
Talk abut yur attitude twards grwn-ups.
    1) Decide whether yu agree with the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups and why.2) Think f sme examples t supprt yur pinins and make ntes.
Yu can rganise yur talk fllwing the steps belw.Explain the authrs attitude twards grwn-ups.State yur wn pinins.Give supprting examples.Cnclude by summarising yur pinins.
The expressins belw may be helpful.1) I ttally agree with the authr because ... / I dn’t agree with the authr because ) In my view ... / In my eyes ... / Persnally, I think ) Take ... fr example ... / Fr instance, ) T cnclude ... T sum up ... / All in all ...
    Think & Share
Think abut the fllwing questins and vice yur pinins.
    1. What were the grwn-ups’ respnses t the authr’s Drawing Number One and Drawing Number Tw? Why d yu think they respnded in this way?2. Accrding t the authr, what is a child’s mst valuable trait? D yu agree with him?
They thught the authr’s Drawing Number One was just abut an rdinary hat. When seeing the authrs Drawing Number Tw, they advised him t change his fcus t his schl subjects, because they knew they were wrng. But they did’t pursue true understanding f it. They were mre keen n fame and wealth.
    1. What were the grwn-ups’ respnses t the authr’s Drawing Number 1 and Drawing Number 2? Why d yu think they respnded in this way?
    2. Accrding t the authr, what is a child’s mst valuable trait? D yu agree with him?
In the authr’s pinin, a child’s mst valuable trait is the seeking f the real nature f things. I agree with him because seeking true understanding is the driving frce f self-develpment.
Tday, we learned an excerpt frm the nvel The Little prince. After reading the passage, think abut what yu may acquire and lse as yu grw up and share yur idea with yur parents. The nvel sets us thinking that when we grw up, we gain sme knwledge, but we shuld als keep ur inncence and initiative in mind.
