David Lean was born in London in 1908. His move into full-scale directing came in 1942 when he worked on In Which We Serve with Noel Coward. Lean went on to direct fifteen fims in forty-nine years, often also taking on writing and editing responsibilities. That may seem like a surprisingly small number of films; however, he was proposed for an Academy Award for Best Director for seven of his films and won twice. In its list of the best British films ever made, the British Film Institute includes eleven of his films.
A film directed by David Lean has a sense of place, whether the film is set in the deserts of Arabia or the workhouses of Dickens' London. Lean makes us understand the effects these places have on the people who inhabit them. There is a shot early in Lawrence of Arabia that illustrates this clearly: Lawrence is making his first try on camel into the Arabian Desert. With him is his guide. As the two move on, Lean allows the camera to rise gently. This tiny movement transforms what could be simply a narrative link or an observation of the vast stretch of the desert into a comment about the central character. Lawrence is entering into his social environment, calmly and acceptingly.
Lean's career reached a peak with the spectacular successes of The Bridge over the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to Indha. However, his real success was a black-and-white British film he made in 1945 and titled Brief Encounter. It is a quiet examination of a married woman and a stranger whom she briefly meets in the snack bar of a local train station. It is truly a piece of classic cinema, full of silent observation and interpretation.
21. Which of the following is the best to describe David Lean?
A. Productive. B. Ambitious. C. Creative. D. Responsible.
22. What do we know about Lanwrence of Arabid?
A. It is acknowledged as Lean's most successful film.
B. It is set in the workhouses of Dickens' London.
C. It is an instance showing Lean's good sense of place.
D. It is a story about a guide exploring the Arabian Desert.
23. What is this text?
A. An advertisement for a movie. B. An introduction to a filmmaker.
C. A play review. D. A short story.
B
Unlike many other Europeans, the French are not noted for their eagerness to work long hours. The British are surprised by the French readiness to rest from work not only on Sunday but also on Monday afternoons. The Germans and the Swiss are less innocent but, nevertheless, are scornful(鄙夷的)of the fact that the whole of France appears to shut down for three weeks in August so that French citizens can rush to the cote d'Azur(a tourist attraction in France) and squeeze together on the narrow area of Mediterranean beach for vacation. Consequently, most of Northern Europe dismisses France as a lazy nation.
Annually, the 14 of July marks the start of what the French call "the great escape. " July 14" is Bastille Day, the celebration of a 1790 attempt to make French political prisoners free, which marked the beginning of modern France, and it was for this reason that, in 1880, Bastille Day was named a national holiday.
The center of the celebration is the Champs-Elyses(香榭丽舍大街) in Paris. An enormous tricolor French flag hangs from the Arc de Triomphe(凯旋门). The broad avenue itself is lined with flags of blue, white, and red. With great pomp(盛况), the President of France progresses along the Champs-Elysees. which is lined with police officers and applauding Parisians. He receives the greeting of the largest military parade in Europe. In the most modern of these displays of power, planes fly low over the cheering crowds.
Later, the president meets with the media and talks informally about what had been achieved in the previous year, how France stands presently, and how she will advance. Bastille Day ends with concerts and parties and, of course, a huge fireworks display centered on the Eiffel Tower. The streets are crowed and alive with people calling out to one another, gossiping, laughing, and partying in being French.
24. According to the text, what is special about the French?
A. They spend all their holidays on Mediterranean beach.
B. They never bother to hide their appetite for vacation.
C. They take a rest on every Monday afternoon.
D. They are eager to work long hours.
25. The underlined word "dismisses" in paragraph 1 can be replaced by ____________.
A. looks down upon B. thinks highly of
C. is indifferent to D. worries unnecessarily about
26. What can the Parisians do on their national holiday?
A. To liberate French political prisoners from Bastille.
B. To meet with the media and accept the interview.
C. To receive the greeting of the largest military parade in Europe.
D. To enjoy a splendid fireworks display near the Eiffel Tower.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. France's Historic Vacation B. France's National Pride
C. French Working Habits D. French Leisurely Lifestyle
C
"Wow, this carrot is shaped like a spaceship!"
As a child. I'd always been drawn to strangely shaped vegetables in the produce aisle: horseshoe eggplants, flat bell peppers, three-legged carrots. . but as time passed, TV ads and perfect supermarket displays taught me that tomatoes should always be perfectly round, carrots straight and apples bright red. I was taught that what looked nice must taste nice.
Today, the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA)acts much like Vogue and Cosmopolitan, setting unrealistic beauty expectations on how produce ought to look, down to the exact color, shape and size. But appearance is a poor indicator of flavor, nutritional value and even freshness. Food stylists in TV ads have conditioned us to see pretty as delicious and nutritious. However, Linda Hagen, a professor of consumer behavior from the University of Southern California, denies the connection between beauty and nutrition, explaining that it is just another marketing strategy used by food companies to increase sales.
In the United States alone, an estimated six billion pounds of ugly produce is left unharvested, unsold and uneaten every year. That's enough food to feed three million people for a whole year!
The discarding of imperfect produce is not just wasteful; it also contributes significantly to climate change. Rotting produce creates large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more effective than carbon dioxide. When supermarkets toss away an ill-shaped tomato, they are also tossing away all of the fertilizer, water and energy that went into growing, storing and transporting that tomato.
I've decided to take this issue into my own hands. Working with local farms. markets, meal centers and food banks, I have rescued over 4, 500 pounds of edible, nutritious, often organic, ugly produce in my city. However, helping can be a lot easier than driving from farm to farm every weekend.
28. How does the writer find the USDA?
A. Inactive. B. Invaluable. C. Inaccessible. D. Irresponsible.
29. What is Prof. Linda Hagen's attitude towards the outside beauty of produce?
A. It reflects the inside value of produce.
B. It's a reasonable marketing strategy.
C. It's by no means connected with nutrition.
D. It indicates flavor, nutrition and freshness.
30. What will be talked about next?
A. Some simple ways to rescue ugly produce.
B. Some other countries that waste produce.
C. Some stories of the writer visiting farms.
D. Some new discoveries by food professionals.

Television - Not So Bad After All?
About ten years ago, surveys recorded data showing the average American viewer to watch four hours of television a day. 31________ Now that the Internet has taken the place of television's role, the complaints made about television can seem rather old-fashioned.
Television certainly had its harmful effects on those who watched it for that unbelievably four hours a day. There could be no "couch potatoes" without TVs. 32________
33________ Drawing on the networks that radio created throughout the entire country, television provided something truly national for the first time, During the first American performance of The Beatles on The Ed Sulivan Show, there was not a single crime committed in the United States. Everyone, almost everyone, was watching TV.
Another pioneering accomplishment of this "big world" was the presence of non-white faces. Non-white people, especially African Americans, were represented on the radio by white actors. 34_________ The popularity of television actually ended up forcing these media into making some kind of progress. Consequently, some of the earliest leading roles for non-white actors came on television, earlier than in film and theater in many cases.
Despite the group psychology and sensationalism(哗众取宠)generated by this national reach, it also showed many in the American public just how diverse the American scene had become. Television could show them how big the world outside was. Television might not play the central role in American culture that it once did. 35____________
A. They imitated the patterns of black speech.
B. Even some of the shows weren't so popular on radio.
C. Television was a central part of the American household.
D. Nevertheless. television accomplished some incredible things as well.
E. Moreover, shining light in your eyes for many hours at a time might hurt your vision.
F. However, many of the things it achieved, both good and bad, remain in the culture today.
G. The Beatles had many hits that continue to influence the course of rock and roll to the present day.

阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1985 my parents made the big move from Illinois, to southern California, along with three very tiny children and all their household possessions. My mother had carefully wrapped and packed four boxes of her mother's hand-painted dinner china. Grandmother had painted this lovely set herself, choosing a forget-me-not pattern(勿忘我图案).
Unfortunately, something happened during the move. One box of the china didn't make it. It never arrived at our new house. So my mother had only three-quarters of the set—she had plates of different sizes and some serving pieces, but missing were the cups and saucers(茶碟)and the bowls. Often at family gatherings or when we would all sit down for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, my mother would say something about the missing china and how she wished it had survived the trip.
When my mother died I inherited Grandmother's china. I, too, used the set on many special occasions, and I, too, wondered what had happened to the missing box.
I love to visit flea markets((跳蚤市场), hunting for treasures. It's great fun to walk up and down the streets early in the morning, watching as the vendors(摊主)spread their wares on the ground.
I hadn't been to a flea market in over a year when, one Sunday in 2013, I got the itch to go. So I crawled out of bed at 5 a. m. , and drove an hour to the Giant Rose Bowl Flea Market in another town. I was looking around and after a couple of hours I was thinking about leaving. I rounded the last corner and took a few steps down the street when I noticed some china spread on the floor. I saw that it was hand-painted china. . . With forget-me-nots! I raced over to look at it more closely, and picked up a cup and saucer. . Forget-me-nots! Exactly like Grandmother's china, with the same delicate strokes(笔画)and the same thin gold bands around the edges. I looked at the rest of the items—there were the cups! The saucers! The bowls! It was Grandmother's china!

Dear Chris,
I’m having a great time in Putuo Mountain, one of the Four Holy Buddhist Mountains in China.
It was a long drive but I found it worthwhile the instant I set foot on the island. The temples scattering among the mountains impressed me and their long history and subtle sculptures kept me in awe. I even made a wish there. The beach is also a nice spot, where I spent a quiet afternoon wandering around and picking up beautiful seashells.
Tomorrow I’m leaving for Ningbo. I’ll keep you updated!

三、 参考范文
Possible version 1:
The vendor had noticed my excitement. When she came over I told her the story of the missing box and asked where she’d got them. It turned out the china had come from an estate sale: she found an old unopened carton stored in the garden, and the china was in it. She questioned the estate owners about the china and they knew nothing about it, saying that the box had been in the garden “forever”. I listened with keen interest and more importantly, sincere gratitude that my china had been “in good hands”. When I bought them at the price the vendor asked, without any bargaining, I felt that the void in my heart had finally been filled.
I left the Flea Market with my amazing treasure. Still overwhelmed, I found myself marveling that
“all the pieces in the universe” tumbled together to let me find the missing china—what if I had slept in? What if I hadn’t turned that last corner, choosing instead to leave and rest my aching feet?—It could take me forever to meet it again. That night I proudly served coffee for my family in those beautiful cups and saucers. Running my fingers lovingly along the forget-me-nots and the thin bands on the rim, I was reconnected with my grandmother. The purple and gold colors were coming alive, dancing with such a grace and reassurance as if they had never been lost in my life.
Possible version 2:
The vendor had noticed my excitement. Therefore she approached me. I told her the sad story behind the missing box, and out of intense curiosity asked how she had got it. Wearing a reassuring smile, she explained that she encountered it at an auction many years ago. And the instant she caught sight of it, she was hooked to its forget-me-not pattern. But when she placed it on her table at home, and the crimson sunset streamed in, the china sat silent and lonely, as if saying “don’t forget me” to its original owner. Thus, she decided not to keep it. Now after learning about my story, she wanted me to take it home for free. In a heartbeat, I felt an immense gratitude surging through my body.
I left the Flea Market with my amazing treasure. Putting it beside its three “siblings”, I couldn’t help running my fingers along its gold rims and, all of a sudden, I felt a missing part of my heart finally drifted back again. Oh! I reconnected with my dear grandmother, who seemed to be saying, “Let’s thank our lives for all these wonders. ” Yes, if I had chosen to doze off instead of getting up, or given up on the last corner, or hadn’t spotted the forget-me-not pattern, I would have brushed past the one-quarter treasure. Fixing my eyes on its vivid and lively pattern, I grasped the hint of living a fulfilling life—cherish the wonders, and don’t miss the meaningful passers-by.

M: Did you cut your hair recently? It looks shorter.
W: I didn’t. Usually, my hair is very straight because of the dry weather here. But I wore a hat today, so that’s the reason.

W: Eww! That is so disgusting! I’m never putting my hand inside a pumpkin again! M: That’s nothing compared with what these things smell like when they turn bad.

M: Can you meet us for dinner this Friday? There’s a great new Indian restaurant that just opened. W: I actually have dinner plans with my high school classmates this Friday. What about this Sunday? M: I will have to watch my sister’s dog while she’s out of town.

W: I can’t believe l got charged another fee for taking money out of an ATM. I’m thinking about switching a bank.
M: I agree. They may be good for loans, but they sound terrible at customer service.

M: Hello, Madam. I am here to visit my teacher who had a serious cold yesterday. Can you tell me where I can find her?
W: Go to the third floor. There is a nurses’ station, and you can ask them. They have information about all our patients.

W: Look around us. Almost everyone is sitting at their tables using their cell phones. M: I never even noticed.
W: That's my point. You didn’t notice, because you’re so used to it. M: I'm hungry. What should we get to eat?
W: Look at this. We don’t even have to speak to the waitress to order our food. We just select what we want from this electronic tablet.
M: Cool! Let me see that.
W: I think all this fancy technology is turning us into robots. People don’t even communicate in person anymore. Something is wrong with this society.
M: Cool! You can play a game on this thing!
W: John?
M: Hold on…Yes! A new high score! Sorry, what were you saying? W: Never mind.

W: I have decided to give up gardening for a while. I want to try something new, like building things out of wood. What do you think?
M: I do a lot of woodworking with my dad, actually.
W: I know you need a lot of tools, and there are different types of wood you can work with.
M: I like to build simple things like shoeboxes and small bowls using hard woods like oak and maple. My dad prefers softer woods like walnut. He usually builds bigger stuff like tables.
W: Could you teach me some of the basics? M: Sure. How about this Sunday?
W: Oh, this Sunday doesn’t work for me. How about tomorrow?
M: No problem. Thursday is fine. Just come over to my house, and my mom will bring you into the workshop.

W: Did you know the Apple smartwatch can save your life? M: No, how is that?
W: The alarm on one woman’s watch went off when her heart started beating much faster. She didn’t even know how it was happening. She went to the doctor to be sure that nothing was wrong. But they tested her and found out she was starting to have a heart attack!
M: That’s amazing. If it had happened to me, I would have thought it was from walking fast or running. W: She wasn’t doing anything active.
M: If the watch can find problems, it will probably become more popular, especially with elderly people. W: The younger generation is into healthy living. They will probably be good customers, too.
M: Hmm… I wonder if other companies like Samsung and Huawei will get in on this part of the market. They must be waiting to see what happens with Apple watch sales.
W: Actually, my friends have smartwatches from those companies already. I like my Fitbit watch, personally. The battery lasts a very long time.

W: Do you want to go fishing with us this Friday? My husband just bought a new boat, and my cousin has a lake house we can stay in. Let me know if you’ re free this weekend.
M: I have a presentation to give this Saturday morning at the office, so I need to prepare the night before. It's for all the other managers, so I'm a little nervous. But I could come up after that. What do I need to take?
W: Just take your fishing license, fishing pole, and whatever you want to eat and drink. We have plenty of space at the lake house.
M: I should arrive sometime on Saturday afternoon, but I need to head back home on Sunday night. W: That’s too bad. My husband will be disappointed that you can’t stay all weekend.
M: My boss is very hard on me, and he’s recently given me a lot of notes about how I need to improve my performance. I need to be well rested for work on Monday.
W: Also, if you want to take your three dogs, there is plenty of room in the backyard. M: Sounds wonderful, but they’re horrible fishing partners. They always scare the fish! W: Ha-ha, I guess so!
M: There is a small chance I won’t be able to make it. I will let you know tomorrow for sure. At least that way, you’d be able to invite someone else the day before you leave.

Good evening, and welcome back to the Channel 5 weather report. It’s Friday, December 2nd, and I think we can officially say that fall is over. We are going to catch up on today’s events, as well as the weather forecast for the rest of the week. I’m your host Andy Dalton. Today, we have seen a sharp drop in pressure coming in from the north, with strong winds and heavy snow. In the northern part of the state, we have already seen two inches of snow over the course of today, with another four inches combined for tomorrow and the next day. So, don’t forget your hat and gloves tonight because it’s cold outside! There are reports of ice on many country roads, and dangerous conditions will remain over the next few days due to the heavy snowfall this evening. You should avoid driving this evening, if possible. Tomorrow, the highest temperature will be five degrees Celsius and the lowest will be -10 degrees Celsius, with light snowfall. It will be cloudy, but at least the winds will be calm—less than three kilometers an hour. Sunday is looking better, with sunshine in the morning and partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. The highest temperature will be in the mid-teens, and the lowest will be right around 0 degrees Celsius. Hopefully, you’ll be able to get out and enjoy skiing over the weekend. This is Andy Dalton at Channel 5, signing off on another weather report.
