In 1909, when Tatiana was just 11 years old, her parents and older brother traveled to the United States. Because the family could not afford to buy her a ticket, she had to remain in Russia. She had lived with her uncle for almost a year in a small house before the special letter arrived from her father. “Dear Tatiana,” he wrote. “At last we have earned (赚得) enough money to pay for your ticket. After you join us in New York, we will travel by train to a place called South Dakota where we have bought a farm.”
A week later, Tatiana’s uncle used the money her father had sent to buy her a ticket for the Louisa Jane, a steamship that was leaving for America. Although she was lonely and missed her family, Tatiana quickly made friends with the other children on the Louisa Jane. Together, they invented games that could be played on the ship, and they ran around the decks (甲板).
The next day, as Tatiana was walking along the deck, she heard some of the passengers talking about the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像). This conversation made her puzzled (困惑的) because she knew that liberty was an idea. No one could see or touch it, so how could you make a statue of liberty? When she asked her friend’s father, Mr. Dimitrivitch, he explained that the statue looked like a woman, but it stood for freedom (自由). This explanation just made Tatiana more interested in the statue.
One morning, Tatiana woke up to the sound of wild shouting. She ran upstairs and found all the passengers were crowded onto the deck. The shouts were really cries of excitement because the Louisa Jane had finally reached the United States. Parents, you’ve worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to your little ones. You ask them to say “please” and “thank you”, you remind them to eat with a knife and fork, and you never, ever let them pick their nose in public. But there’s one important lesson that you might be forgetting — and it’s nothing you can cover in a simple conversation.
According to a new study in the journal Science, babies receive more than genetics (基因) from their parents. They can also get certain good qualities (品质), such as persistence (坚持不懈), by watching how adults behave. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology say that babies who watched an adult struggle (努力) with and then triumph over something were more likely to show persistence themselves when given a new task.
The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months. They placed them in one of three situations. In the first one, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the baby watch while she did so. The second time, the researcher solved the problems but did not struggle with them. And for the third scene, she did not do anything.
After each scene, the researcher left a small musical toy with the child. She showed the baby that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies who had watched the researcher struggle discovered and pressed the toy’s button (按钮) a much greater number of times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.
Now, the researchers are interested in finding which ways of talking with babies influence them the most. They also hope to know if the results can work in the real world, as well as whether the lesson of persistence might last into adulthood.
28. What important lesson might parents forget?
A. Asking their kids to be polite.
B. Setting an example for their kids.
C. Teaching their kids good table manners.
D. Using proper words in front of their kids.
29. What do the underlined words “triumph over”in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Succeed at.
B. Look at.
C. Search for.
D. Care for.
30. What did the study mainly show?
A. Babies finished difficult tasks through copying.
B. Babies learned the value of persistence.
C. Kids learned most from their parents.
D. Kids are smarter than we thought.
31. What will the researchers make an effort to do?
A. Know the influence of society on behaviors.
B. Help parents get along with their kids.
C. Put the research results into practice.
D. Learn more about babies’ language.

Princess Cruise Lines has agreed to pay a record $40 million fine for discharging (排放) waste off the coast of England and trying to cover up its “deliberate (故意的) pollution of the seas.”
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the company’s Caribbean Princess ship had been making illegal discharges through a piece of equipment known as a “magic pipe (管子) ” since 2005, one year after it was placed in service.
The agreement announced Thursday relates to an event off the coast of England on Aug. 23, 2013, when the Caribbean Princess discharged “oily waste” from shop machinery into the ocean. A newly employed engineer reported the event and stopped his work when the ship reached Southampton, England.
The fine is the largest one ever paid for a deliberate discharge by a cruise ship. “The pollution in this case was the result of more than just bad actors on one ship,” Assistant Attorney General John C. Cruden said. “It is not in line with Princess’s culture and management. This is a company that knew better and should have done better. Hopefully other companies can learn a lesson from the result of this case.”
Princess Cruise Lines said it was very disappointed about the inexcusable actions of the employees who broke the policies when they discharged untreated waste water into the ocean.
The Caribbean Princess used the “magic pipe” to avoid buying required pollution prevention equipment and the ship’s first senior engineer directed other employees to lie about the August 2013 discharge.
32. What do we know about the Caribbean Princess?
A. It started discharging waste when it came into service.
B. It was the newest ship of Princess Cruise Lines.
C. It carried passengers for the first time in 2004.
D. It didn’t send waste into the ocean on purpose.
33. The employee who reported the event _____.
A. knew the ship quite well
B. gave up his job in 2013
C. was an inexperienced engineer
D. was responsible for the event
34. What can be inferred from John C. Cruden’s words?
A. He didn’t think the pollution was so serious.
B. He had high expectations of Princess Cruise Lines.
C. He was worried other companies would use a “magic pipe”.
D. He always knew Princess Cruise Lines had poor management.
35. What’s Princess Cruise Lines’ attitude towards its employees?
A. Dissatisfied.
B. Uncaring.
C. Thankful.
D. Doubtful.

Too much information
Computers and cell phones let people communicate with each other by voice or text anytime, anywhere. The result: too much information! So let me offer these tips (提示) to help you deal with it.
Tip 1 — Stick to a schedule (日程表). Do you have a calendar? Use it to schedule study times and meetings. How about also using it to schedule quiet time? 36 Then stick to it!
Tip 2 — Text or phone call? Texts are great for short messages, but not for long messages. Phone calls are fine when you want a more personal touch, but not when you need to save information about a conversation. 37
Tip 3 — Let it ring. You don’t have to answer every phone call. If you don’t want to talk, screen your calls and let the caller leave a message. 38
The same is true for text messages.
Tip 4 — 39 After you’ve answered an email, delete it or file (把……归档) it. If you need to save an email, create folders — for school, for work, for friends. Find a way to organize your messages that works for you, and follow it.
Tip 5 — 40 If you belong to a social network site, are all your “friends” on the site real friends, or are some just strangers? Limit the number of “friends” on your social network, and you will limit communication overload (过多).
A. Or turn off your phone.
B. Keep your inbox empty.
C. Choose your friends carefully.
D. Pick different kinds of social network sites.
E. In those cases, an email or a letter may be better.
F. Check your cell phones and computers more frequently.
G. That is, set aside time for no email, no texts, no phone calls, nothing!

A
Tim Abernathy, 47, walked off the dance floor at the Menlo Barn Dance near Summerville, Georgia. He sat down in a folding chair to rest with his wife, Tina Abernathy, next to him. Then something felt wrong. His throat got tight (紧的), then tighter. He then fell onto the floor.
“His mouth had turned blue and was getting darker,” said Tina. The band stopped playing. People started shouting, but nobody stepped forward to act. Someone finally did. It was Johnny “Digger” Tucker. He opened Tim’s mouth to see if anything was inside. He started beating on Tim’s chest. Then he began mouth-to-mouth. Then, finally, Tim drew a breath. “If Johnny hadn’t been there, I would be burying my husband,” said Tina.
Johnny is a gravedigger (掘墓者). He has his rules: no smoking, or radio playing during the grave digging. “I treat everybody as if it’s my family I’m burying,” he said. He is very honorable around Chattanooga.
So maybe it’s not surprising that Johnny often finds himself in a position to lend a hand. That night at the barn dance was actually his second life-saving action. In the ‘90s, a car driving in front of him changed direction suddenly on the highway, falling into a cold river. Johnny jumped out and pulled the driver to safety. “I don’t want to see somebody leave this world,” Johnny said. On top of that, Johnny has been fighting cancer for the past four years. “He’s as strong as they come,” said his wife, Mary Tucker.
That’s why the couple spends Saturday nights at the barn dance, living it up and closing the place down. Johnny and Mary were actually on their way out the door that night when Tim Abernathy fell down. But then the band started playing that old Vern Gosdin song “Chiseled in Stone”. “Our song,” said Johnny to Mary. They turned around for one more slow dance. Minutes later, the gravedigger had saved another life.
1. What happened to Tim at the barn dance?
A. He fell and hurt himself.
B. He couldn’t see clearly.
C. He had a serious heart disease.
D. He was unable to breathe properly.
2. What is people’s attitude towards Johnny?
A. Admiring.
B. Hopeful.
C. Worried.
D. Uncaring.
3. Why did the couple go back to the barn dance that night?
A. They wanted to help Tim.
B. They returned to play a song.
C. They forgot to lock the barn door.
D. They expected to enjoy another dance.
4. Which of the following can best describe Johnny?
A. Brave and healthy.
B. Energetic and sporty.
C. Strong and warm-hearted.
D. Friendly and open-minded.

Can you imagine a world without balloons? No balloons on your birthday. No balloons to cheer you up when you’re sick. No balloons at parties. What a sad, boring world that would be!
But some people are saying it’s time for balloons to go the way of the dinosaurs. They say balloons are bad for the environment and dangerous to animals. They are wrong.
“There is little evidence to show that balloons are a danger to sea animals,” says Dan Flynn, chairman of the Balloon Council, an organization of balloon makers and sellers. According to Flynn, the real problem is plastic rubbish — things like bags and bottles.
Still, even if balloons were a threat to wildlife, the solution wouldn’t be to ban all balloons forever. The solution would be simply to stop letting them go and dispose of (处理) them properly instead: Let the air out of them and cut any strings (细绳) into small pieces before throwing the balloons away. Balloons placed in the rubbish bin are unlikely to end up being eaten by sea animals or as rubbish on beaches. Proper disposal would also solve the problem of balloons getting caught in power lines.
Another way to ensure your balloons don’t harm the environment is to choose ones made of latex rather than mylar. Latex is biodegradable (可生物降解的). Mylar — a plastic material — is not.
Then there is the so-called problem of helium (氦). Yes, there isn’t a lot of helium. But only 5 to 7 percent of the world’s helium supply is used for balloons, according to the Balloon Association, a British trade organization. This amount of helium is so small it is not worth worrying about.
The Balloon Council has been working with buyers and sellers to make sure everyone knows how to use and dispose of balloons responsibly.
“Balloons bring people so much joy,” says Flynn. “There aren’t a lot of dangers. When they are properly used, they are very safe.”
5. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Return.
B. Change.
C. Develop.
D. Disappear.
6. What is one of the solutions mentioned in the text?
A. Stop using helium.
B. Replace mylar with latex.
C. Tie used balloons with strings.
D. Cut balloons into small pieces.
7. How does Flynn look at balloons?
A. They are a great threat to the environment.
B. They are not a serious problem.
C. They are dangerous to children.
D. They are becoming popular.
8. What is the best title for the text?
A. The dangers of balloons
B. A world without balloons
C. Balloons bring joy to millions
D. Make balloons safer for children
