1. Teacher asks students to read the introduction to Tolkien and answer the questions. （ Exercise 1 on page 14）

(1)    What kind of novel is Tolkien famous for?

(2)    Have you ever read any of Tolkien’s books or seen any of the films based on them? What do you think of them?

(3)    What else do you know about Tolkien? Find out more about him and share your research with the class.

2. Students work in groups of 4 to discuss the questions.

1. Teacher asks students to look at the pictures and the title on pages 14 & 15 to predict what Letters from Father Christmas is about and why Tolkien wrote these letters. （ Exercise 2 on page 14）
