    Warm up

    Show a map of the world to students. And lead them to say the names of the places and what language the people speak.

    Look at the map carefully and answer the questions.

    1. Have students look at the map and answer the question:

    Which language do you think is the most widely used language in the world?

    Fast reading

    Make students listen to the tape with the questions below, then ask them to read the passage and answer the questions.

    About 400 million.

    2. How did English become an international language?

    In the 20th century, the USA spread English to the world through newspapers, television and films.

    3. When will Chinese become an international language?

    By the middle of the 21st century.

    4. Who owns English?

    Everyone who speaks it.

    2. Decide whom the passage is written for.
