American Express Gold: Best “non-travel” travel card
Why it’s great in one sentence: The American Express Gold card earns tons of valuable Amex travel points on practically all the food-related purchases you’re making even when you are not traveling, and the credits available on the card nearly offset (抵消) its annual fee.
This card is right for: People who can use all of the card’s various credits and who spend significant money at restaurants, on food delivery services or at U.S. supermarkets while they are not on the road.
    Highlights:
First, with the Amex Gold, you’ll earn 4 points for every dollar you spend on restaurants worldwide, and on up to $25,000 in annual purchases at U.S. supermarkets (1 point per dollar afterwards). Most food delivery services count as “restaurants” on this card, so that means the vast majority of your food purchases will earn 4 points, regardless of how you’re eating.
You’ll also earn 3 points per dollar when you book airfare directly with an airline, so if you’re looking to jump on any sales for flights later in the year, you can pay for them with the Amex Gold and earn extra points on those as well.
The points earned on this card are American Express Membership Rewards points, which are extremely useful. You can redeem (兑取现金) them directly for flights via Amex Travel at 1 cent each, but if you put in some extra effort and research, you can potentially get much more value from them by transferring them to any of Amex’s 21 airline and hotel partners, which include Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Marriott and many more.
    1. What can we know about the American Express Gold card?
    A. It requires no annual fee. B. It has a link with food purchases.
    C. It is targeted at delivery services. D. It.is right for restaurant managers.
    2. If you spend $ 25,800 annually at U.S. supermarkets, how many points will you earn?
    A. 100,000. B. 100,800. C. 103,200. D. 400,000.
    3. What can you do with these points on this card?
    A. Change them into money to buy food.
    B. Transfer guests from airlines to hotels.
    C. Purchase services in suggested airlines.
D Make some extra effort and do research.

Born into poverty on 21 May 1799, Mary Anning had to work hard from a young age. Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood — Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder. At the age of 15 months, a sudden rainstorm hit the shelter, where Mary, her babysitter, and two children stayed. A lightning strike killed them all except Mary.
She didn’t have formal education and was only taught to read at a Sunday school. Raised in the seaside holiday village of Lyme Regis in Dorset, Mary and Joseph made a living by selling fossils to holidaymakers at their father’s waterfront booth.
Her life changed in 1811 when Joseph noticed bones mixed together with rock. Unknown to them, this was the first ever discovery of an ichthyosaurus (鱼龙), a marine lizard from the Triassic period. Anning noted down every find she made, and after failing to find any new fossils for over a year, in 1821 she made her next discovery, digging up three more ichthyosaur skeletons. This was followed two years later by an even more impressive find — a complete plesiosaur (蛇颈龙). This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it fake, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.
Despite the setback, Anning continued to make more shocking revelations. Anning also dug up fossilized waste, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures. But her biggest find of all was the first complete skeleton of a pterosaur (翼龙) in 1828.
All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology (古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. Her work also encouraged people to question the history of the Earth in more detail and encouraged girls and those from poor backgrounds by proving that they could succeed in scientific study, a profession mainly controlled by wealthy upper-class men.
    4. What can we learn about Mary Anning from the first two paragraphs?
    A. It was not easy for her to survive.
    B. She didn’t experience the lightning strike.
    C. She sold fossils to the locals in the supermarkets on weekends.
    D. It was impossible for her to find a job outside.
    5. Why many leading scientists thought Anning’s discovery was fake?
    A. Because Joseph mixed bones together with rock.
    B. Because Anning didn’t study the ichthyosaurus when she was at school.
C Because Anning wasn’t well-educated and the discovery conflicted with the Bible.
    D. Because Anning didn’t believe in the Bible.
    6. Anning’s findings of fossilized waste helped ________.
    A. her get international fame
    B. make her become more professional
    C. experts better understand prehistoric creatures
    D. convince the leading scientists of her discovery
    7. What does the last paragraph mainly show?
    A. The process of her findings.
    B. The significance of her discoveries.
    C. The discoveries of fossilized animals.
    D. The background of her scientific study.
A 5. C 6. C 7. B

通读一、二段,尤其根据第一段“Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood --- Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder.(她的父母有10个孩子,其中只有两个活了下来——Mary和她的哥哥Joseph。Mary的父母说她能活下来真是个奇迹。)”中的wonder可知,Mary能活下来不容易。故选A项。
根据第三段“This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it fake, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.(这是如此的不同寻常,以至于许多一流科学家都宣称它是假的,不愿相信一个24岁的未受过教育的人能找到如此不同寻常的遗骸。此外,当时的社会是高度宗教化的,许多人拒绝接受这些发现,因为它们与圣经的教义相冲突。)”可知,许多一流的科学家认为Anning的发现是假的,因为她没有受过良好的教育,而且这个发现与圣经相冲突。故选C项。
    【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Anning also dug up fossilized shit, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures.(Anning还挖出了粪便化石,这使专家们了解了史前生物的食谱。)”
根据最后一段“All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology(古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. C
It is likely that most people have the shared feeling: how come Christmas appears to come around quicker and quicker each year? Questionnaires by psychologists have shown almost everyone feels time is passing faster now compared to when they were half or a quarter as old. Most strikingly, lots of experiments have shown that, when older people are asked to guess how long the time is, or to “reproduce” the length of periods of time, they guess a shorter amount than younger people.
In 1877, Paul Janet suggested the proportional theory, where a child of 10 feels a year as 1/10 of his whole life while a man of 50 as 1/50, so the subjective sense of the 50-year-old man is that these are insignificant periods of time which gallop.
There are also biological theories. The speeding up of time is linked to how our metabolism (新陈代谢) gradually slows down as we grow older. Children’s hearts beat faster than adults’. They breathe more quickly. With their blood flowing more quickly, their body clocks “cover” more time within the space of 24 hours than ours do as adults. On the other hand, older people are like clocks that run slower than normal, so that they lag behind, and cover less than 24 hours.
In the 1930s, the psychologist Hudson Hoagland found body temperature causes different perceptions of time. Once, when he looked after his ill wife, he noticed she complained he’d been away for a long time even if only away for a few moments. Therefore, Hoagland tested her perception of time at different temperatures, finding the higher her temperature, the more time seemed to slow down for her, and that raising a person’s body temperature can slow down his sense of time passing by up to 20%.
Time doesn’t necessarily have to speed up as we get older though. It depends on how we live our lives, and how we relate to our experiences.
    8. What do the questionnaires and experiments find?
    A. Time now is shorter than before.
    B. Aging makes people think slowly.
    C. The old feel time flies faster than the young.
    D. The old value time more than before.
    9. What does the underlined word “gallop” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Fly swiftly. B. Pause briefly. C. Move slowly. D. Pass stably.
    10. According to Hudson Hoagland, who may feel time go more slowly?
    A. A kid with slower metabolism.
    B. A child with low body temperature.
    C. A grown-up feeling freezing.
    D. An adult with a high fever.
    11. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. How Time Flies! B. Live a Full Life!
    C. Why Does Time Pass at Different Speeds? D. How Can We Save More Time?
C 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“Questionnaires by psychologists have shown almost everyone feels time is passing faster now compared to when they were half or a quarter as old. Most strikingly, lots of experiments have shown that, when older people are asked to guess how long the time is, or to “reproduce” the length of periods of time, they guess a shorter amount than younger people. (心理学家的调查问卷显示,几乎每个人都觉得现在时间过得比自己年龄一半或四分之一时快。最引人注目的是,大量的实验表明,当老年人被要求猜测时间有多长,或“重现”一段时间的长度时,他们猜测的时间比年轻人要短)”可知,问卷调查和实验表明同样长的一段时间老年人觉得短,而孩子觉得很长,所以可以推理老年人觉得时间过得快。故选C项。
    【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段划线词前“In 1877, Paul Janet suggested the proportional theory, where a child of 10 feels a year as 1/10 of his whole life while a man of 50 as 1/50, so the subjective sense of the 50-year-old man is that these are insignificant periods of time which gallop.(1877年,保罗·珍妮特提出了比例理论,10岁的孩子觉得1年是他一生的1/10,而50岁的男人觉得1/50,所以50岁的男人的主观感觉是,这些时间都是微不足道的,飞快流逝的)”,划线词为动词作谓语,主语which指代50岁男人眼中那些“insignificant periods of time”,他们认为这些时间只是很短的时间,不足为道。 故选A项。
根据第四段“Therefore, Hoagland tested her perception of time at different temperatures, finding the higher her temperature, the more time seemed to slow down for her, and that raising a person’s body temperature can slow down his sense of time passing by up to 20%. (因此,霍格兰测试了她在不同温度下的时间知觉,发现她的体温越高,时间对她来说似乎越慢,而提高一个人的体温可以使他对时间流逝的感觉慢20%)”可知,一个人发烧体温高时会觉得时间过得比较慢,故选D项。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开头提出人们的感受:为什么圣诞节一年比一年来得快呢?又通过保罗·珍妮特提出的比例理论第二段“In 1877, Paul Janet suggested the proportional theory, where a child of 10 feels a year as 1/10 of his whole life while a man of 50 as 1/50, so the subjective sense of the 50-year-old man is that these are insignificant periods of time which gallop (1877年,保罗·珍妮特提出了比例理论,10岁的孩子觉得1年是他一生的1/10,而50岁的男人觉得1/50,所以50岁的男人的主观感觉是,这些时间都是微不足道的,飞快流逝的)”和心理学家哈德森·霍格兰的发现“…和第四段finding the higher her temperature, the more time seemed to slow down for her, and that raising a person’s body temperature can slow down his sense of time passing by up to 20%.(发现她的体温越高,时间对她来说似乎越慢,而提高一个人的体温可以使他对时间流逝的感觉慢20%)”解释了年龄和体温等因素会使人觉得时间流逝的速度不一样这的问题。
    D
Many people count on faster, cheaper and better technology to offer a vision of a brighter future. Nevertheless, as the 2020s dawn, optimism is in short supply. The new technologies that dominated the past decade seem to be making matters worse. Social media were supposed to bring people together, but they are better known for leaking privacy. E-commerce, ride-hailing and the gig economy (零工经济) may be convenient, but they are charged with underpaying workers, worsening inequality and blocking the streets with vehicles.
Today’s pessimistic mood is centered on smart phones and social media, which took off a decade ago. Yet concerns that particular technologies might be doing more harm than good have arisen before. The 1920s witnessed a criticism against cars, which had earlier been seen as an answer to the problems caused by horse-drawn vehicles which filled the streets with noise and animal waste and caused accidents. And industrialization was criticized in the 19th century by Romantics who worried about the replacement of skilled workers, the robbing of the countryside and the suffering of factory hands.
However, that pessimism can be overdone. Too often people focus on the drawbacks of a new technology while taking its benefits for granted. Worries about screen time should be weighed against the much more substantial benefits of convenient communication and the instant access to information and entertainment that smartphones make possible. A further danger is that Luddite (反对技术进步者) efforts to avoid the short-term costs associated with a new technology will end up denying access to its long-term benefits—something Carl Benedikt Frey, an Oxford academic, calls a “technology trap”. Fears that robots will steal people’s jobs may discourage their use. Yet in the long run countries that wish to maintain their standard of living as their workforce ages and shrinks will need more robots, not fewer.
Any powerful technology can be used for good or ill. It is the choices people make about it that shape the world. Perhaps the real source of anxiety is not technology itself, but growing doubts about the ability of societies to hold this debate, and come up with good answers. So as the decade turns, put aside the pessimism for a moment. To be alive in the tech-obsessed 2020s is to be among the luckiest people who have ever lived.
    12. According to the passage, which of the following is a problem caused by new technologies?
    A. Endless hacking. B. Network viruses.
    C. Convenient communication. D. Leaking privacy.
    13. Which word can best describe Romantics’ concern over industrialization?
    A. Negative. B. Uncertain. C. Sympathetic. D. Enthusiastic.
    14. What might be a result of a “technology trap”?
    A. A lack of good jobs in the job market.
    B. An increase in the number of Luddites.
    C. A decrease in the number of skilled workers.
    D. An interruption to the advancement of a new technology.
    15. What can we know from the passage?
    A. Man is blessed to live in the 2020s with high tech advancing fast despite some drawbacks.
    B. All the people object to the progress technology brings because it harms our civilization.
    C. The 2020s is the Age of Technology and mankind is suffering a lot due to its influence.
    D. Humans completely depend on our future caretakers—robots.
D 13. A 14. D 15. A
根据第一段的“Social media were supposed to bring people together, but they are better known for leaking privacy.(社交媒体本应把人们聚在一起,但它们更出名的是泄露隐私)”可知,新技术引起的问题是泄露隐私。
根据第二段的“And industrialization was criticized in the 19th century by Romantics who worried about the replacement of skilled workers, the robbing of the countryside and the suffering of factory hands.(工业化在19世纪受到了浪漫主义者的批评,他们担心技术工人的更替,农村的掠夺和工厂工人的痛苦)”可知,浪漫主义者对工业化的担忧是消极否定的,故选A。

    How to “Speed-read” Body Language
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing has dramatically changed the way we interact with each other, especially when it comes to non-verbal communication.
Wearing a face mask has quickly become the norm — and that will likely remain for the foreseeable future. ____16____ How can we better read body language, now that we’re wearing masks? Part of the answer lies in the question itself. Too often, we put all our focus into people’s faces, when we should also be observing the movements of their entire upper bodies. This is especially important today, since we do a lot of social interacting through video platforms, where we see each other mostly from the waist up. ____17____ Here are some tips on how to speed-read it.
    Touching the neck
If someone is touching their “neck dimple” (the visible indentation at the middle-front of their neck), it could mean they’re distressed or insecure. ____18____
    Rubbing the chest
____19____ If someone is rubbing the upper part of their chest with a palm of a hand (or even just the fingers), it can indicate discomfort or concern. I recently found myself doing this when discussing a family-member’s health.
    Tilted head
Head movements can go a long way toward showing whether or not someone is fully engaged, especially during video conference calls. A slightly tilted head displays awareness and attentiveness. ____20____
    Squinted eyes
We often squint our eyes when we’re trying to focus our vision on something that’s far away. But squinted eyes and a furrowed “glabella” (the part of the forehead above and between the eyebrows) can also be a sign of disagreement or confusion.
    A. This is another sign of stress and anxiety.
    B. If you notice someone doing this, try to comfort them or ease their anxiety.
    C. Wearing a mask is a normal part of being around other people.
    D. They shouldn’t show facial expressions or use body language in public.
E Body language is an outward reflection of a person’s emotional condition.

根据上文“Wearing a face mask has quickly become the norm — and that will likely remain for the foreseeable future.(戴口罩已经迅速成为常态,并且在可预见的未来,这种情况可能会继续存在。)” 根据下文“How can we better read body language, now that we’re wearing masks?(既然我们戴着口罩,如何能更好地阅读肢体语言呢?)”
根据上文“Too often, we put all our focus into people’s faces, when we should also be observing the movements of their entire upper bodies.(很多时候,我们把所有注意力都放在人们的脸上,而我们也应该观察他们整个上半身的运动。)”
根据上文“If someone is touching their “neck dimple” (the visible indentation at the middle-front of their neck), it could mean they’re distressed or insecure.(如果有人触摸他们的“脖子酒窝”(脖子中前部的可见凹痕,这可能意味着他们感到痛苦或不安全))”说明下文应对此提出相应的建议。
根据下文“If someone is rubbing the upper part of their chest with a palm of a hand (or even just the fingers), it can indicate discomfort or concern.(如果有人用手掌(甚至只是手指)揉搓胸部上部,则可能表明不适或担忧。)” 故选A项。
根据上文“Head movements can go a long way toward showing whether or not someone is fully engaged, especially during video conference calls.
