Todd Bol, a retired businessman, could never have expected that a wooden container he built in his front yard one day would have the global impact it does today.
Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol's prototype gave birth to Little Free Library(LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both.Today, there are over 50,000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.
Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his/her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are assigned a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标)and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.
People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it's convenient. Some sidewalk librarians say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It getspeople talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”
24. What does the underlined word “prototype” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A community center. B.A dollhouse on a post.
C.A book exchange box. D.A nonprofit organization.
25.What can we learn about the operation of a Little Free Library?
A.There is no limit to the selection of books.
B.The library can come in any shape and color.
C. The library needs to hire many professional librarians.
D.The owner must first be assigned a number from the LFL website.
26.What can be inferred about Little Free Library?
A.It helps improve GPS functions. B.It connects libraries around the world.
C.It makes reading accessible to the poor. D.It helps restore human connections.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.LFL:A Booster to Shared Reading B.LFL:The Best Place to Meet Neighbors
C.Todd Bol:A Successful Book Businessman D.Reading:An Approach to Improving Yourself

Elon Musk isn't content with electric cars, shooting people into orbit and populating Mars. He also wants to get inside your brain.
His goal is to develop devices that can provide treatment to neural(神经的)diseases-and that may one day be powerful enough to put humanity on an equal footing with possible future super intelligent computers.
Not that it's anywhere close to that yet.
In a video Friday obviously aimed at seeking new employees, Musk showed off the second version of the Neuralink, a device about the size of a large coin. It's designed to be put in a person's head. An earlier version of the device has to be placed behind an ear like a huge hearing aid.
But the young company is far from having a commercial product, which would involve complex human trials and governmental approval. Friday's video showed three pigs. One, named Gertrude, had a Neuralink device in its brain.
Musk, a founder of both the electric car company Tesla Motors and the space-exploration firm SpaceX, has always been worried about that smarter AI machines will outwit humans. His solution? Link our brains to computers so we can keep up with or even win over them in intelligence!
Musk urged coders, engineers and especially people who have actually created a product to apply. “You don't need to have brain experience, “hesaid, adding that this is something that can be learned on the job.
Connecting a brain up directly to electronics is not new. Doctors have already put similar devices in brains to treat such conditions as Parkinson's disease. In 2016, researchers reported that a man regained some movement in his own hand with a similar brain implant. But Musk's proposal goes beyond this. Neuralink wants to build on those existing medical treatments and work on devices that could link our brains to computers one day.
28.What can we learn about the first version of the Neuralink?
A.It is smaller than a hearing aid. B. It can be put in a person's head.
C. It has to be placed behind the ear. D.It is already available at the market.
29.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “outwit" in paragraph 6?
A.Copy. B.Defeat. C.Understand. D.Destroy.
30.What kind of candidates does Elon Musk particularly want?
A.Someone who also wants to create the same device.
B.Doctors who already know how to treat brain diseases.
C.People who have already designed some unique product.
D.Engineers who are good at linking brains to computers.
31.Where is this text likely from?
A.An advertisement. B.A test report. C.A science fiction. D.A news report.

Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky and misunderstood overlap between strength-based science and the research on narcissism(自恋).
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers have gone so far as to say that it is occurring in epidemic proportions, with about 25% of young people showing symptoms of narcissism. The inflated ego of Generation Me is reflected in reality TV,celebrity worship, out-of-control consumerism and materialism...perhaps even a new type of president.
We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful counter-reaction to approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves.
In my own research on strength-based parenting it is common for people to wrongly label this approach as a recipe for narcissism. Their argument seems to be that children who know their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child arrogant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine confidence about one's strengths is categorized as over-confidence; desirable self-knowledge is branded as excessive self-admiration.
Why does this occur? It's partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals or has been applied only within certain contexts such as the workplace, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and into our collective consciousness. The New York Times noted that narcissism is a favored “go-to" topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it.
The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because we unknowingly fall prey to binary(非此即彼)thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. We focus on Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. There's no way that Gandhi and Mother Teresa could have achieved what they did without confidence in their strengths, and yet they are both pillars of modesty and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-focus is the same as a self-focus, we fail to entertain the idea that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and focus on helping others.
It's tempting to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I'd like to stand up for the thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble -even when they use their strengths.
32. Why are teenagers' strengths often mistaken for narcissism?
A.Strengths psychology is less accessible to the general public.
B.Academic journals and mass media report more on narcissism.
C.There is a lack of strengths in our collective consciousness.
D.Numbers of people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors.
33.The author mentions Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 6 to show that
A.they are both victims of binary thinking
B.one can be both modest and sure of himself
C.confidence is quite important for celebrities
D.public figures unknowingly fall prey to narcissism
34. What's the author's attitude towards young kids'strength-based approaches?
A.Skeptical. B.Favorable. C.Neutral. D.Cautious.
35.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Teens'strengths psychology. B.Teens'narcissism diagnosis.
C.Teens'anxiety and depression. D.Teens'confidence misunderstood.

Why do Hiccups Happen?
Most of us have been hic, hic, hiccupping since before we were born.Hiccups are the loud noises our throats make without us wanting them to. 36 But why do we hiccup, and how can we stop them?
According to WebMD, hiccups start in our diaphragm-which is the muscle between our lungs and stomach that helps us to breathe. When we breathe in, our diaphragm pulls down to let air into our lungs. 37 But if something irritates our diaphragm, it can cause it to spasm(痉挛). The spasm makes us inhale air suddenly. When this air hits our voice box,our vocal cords immediately shut, creating a “hic”sound.
38 Swallowing air while sucking on candy-or drinking fizzy drinks like Coca-Cola,or too much alcohol-can also cause us to hiccup. Emotions-like being nervous, excited,or even stressed-cause hiccups too.
But how can we get rid of them? 39 The official recommendations from the UK's National Health Service(NHS) say that holding your breath for a short time is a good idea. Breathing into a paper bag is another option the NHS gives,as well as pulling your knees up to your chest and leaning forward, or very slowly drinking ice-cold water. 40
However,if your hiccups still haven't gone away after two days, WebMD says you'll need to contact a doctor.
A.More haste,less speed.
B.It then relaxes when we breathe out again.
C.They can be funny or embarrassing depending on where we are.
D.Some of the reasons we hiccup include eating too quickly or too much.
E.They get in the way of breathing, eating, or sleeping comfortably.
F.Some people believe holding your breath and slowly counting to 10 can work.
G.Stranger suggestions from the NHS include biting on a lemon or tasting vinegar.

The other day, I discover I couldn't move my right arm and fingers after sleeping through a flight. Having diagnosed me with neural injury, the doctor suggested I could try acupuncture(针灸).So I followed his advices and began my treatment. Dozens tiny needles were inserted across my arm and fingers. I dared not move, because even a small change of position could cause a acute pain. Two weeks went by since I could eat a meal with chopsticks and it took a month for my arm and fingers to return back to their normal functions. I was very amazing at how magic these needles were. That I had always considered old-fashioned and useless turned out to be of great use. I hope acupuncture, with its help I recovered, will continue to bring health to other people.
