I'm Sally. I was a shy girl. But this term, I decided to do a brave (勇敢) thing. This term, we had a new subject to learn—physics. When our teacher asked someone to be the physics monitor (物理课代表), I put up my hand and got the role. But it was not as easy as I thought.
At the beginning, I found that many students did not hand in (上交) their homework, so I was a little worried. I shouted at the students. It made the students angry. One girl asked, "Why are you shouting at me? You're making it seem like it is all my fault (错误)." Then I found that it was my fault in fact. I should talk to my classmates in a kind way and not get so angry.
After this, I changed (改变) how I spoke. "Excuse me. Could you please finish your homework?" I said. Later, I was surprised that many students understood me a lot better and finished their homework quickly.

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap(捕蝇草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the US. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly.
Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly (苍蝇) touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. After about half an hour, the leaf presses (压) the fly to make it die. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
Plants are living things that have leaves and roots and grows in earth. Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, especially nitrogen(氮). Animal meat has a lot of nitrogen,so some plants eat it. Let’s hope that some of the bigger plants don’t get the same idea!

Americans love Christmas trees. The National Christmas Tree Association (协会) says more than 35 million of them were bought last year in the United States. In large American cities, many people buy trees that have already been cut. But many people drive to a tree farm and cut their own tree. Some buy trees online, and the tree is then delivered to their home.
It is said that 10.9 million artificial (人造的) trees were sold in 2012, compared to 24.5 million natural trees. The average cost of a natural tree was $40 and about $70 for an artificial one. Most Christmas trees are now grown on farms. The trees take six to ten years to grow to become Christmas trees.
Real trees are better for the environment, that is because as Christmas trees grow, they collect carbon dioxide and other gases while supplying (提供) fresh oxygen. The trees also protect water supplies.
Some people throw away their natural trees when the holiday season ends. But many people recycle them. There are many ways to do this. Christmas trees can be cut up to be used as fertilizer (肥料). They can also be cut and used to prevent the wearing down of soil. Artificial trees which come mostly from China can be reused for years. Families use them for an average of six to nine years before throwing them away.

They are animals that live in the south of the Yangtze River in China. They have hard scales (鳞). They are also known as scaly anteaters (食蚁兽) and help to protect trees in the forest. They are Chinese pangolins (中华穿山甲).
But they are in danger now. Experts said that Chinese pangolins are functionally extinct (功能性灭绝), Beijing News reported. This means they cannot give birth to baby pangolins in the wild. They can no longer play an important role in the wild.
According to a national wildlife survey, there were about 60, 000 Chinese pangolins in different places, including Yunnan and Zhejiang in the 1990s. Since then, this number has gone down by 90 percent because of poachers (偷猎者).
It's said that the government would carry out stricter policy to protect pangolins in 2016, which means they would be protected at the same level as giant pandas. People would not be able to sell or use pangolin products.
Why do people hunt pangolins? Poachers hunt Chinese pangolins for their scales and meat. People use their scales in traditional Chinese medicine. And it's believed that their meat is high in nutritional value.
In addition, Chinese pangolins are facing a loss of their homes because of pollution and reduction in forests.

Twenty years ago in Costa Rica, three girls found a baby sloth (树懒) on a road. The little animal’s mother was killed by a car. These girls took the baby sloth to Judy, the owner of a hotel. Judy wanted to help, but she didn’t know how to look after the sloth, so she called the zoo. With the help of the zoo, Judy took good care of the baby sloth. She named the baby sloth Bettercup.
After her first success, more people brought Judy wounded (受伤的) sloths or baby sloths they found. Judy then opened a help centre. Today, the help centre has saved over 500 sloths.
Sloths live in the forests of Central America and South America. They hang onto the trees with their claws (爪子). There are two main types of sloths. You can know them by the number of their claws. Sloths hardly move. They spend most of their time sleeping in the trees.
But now, with an increase in population, human beings( 人类 ) cause a lot of problems for these slow and quiet animals. The main problem is that the forests are becoming smaller and smaller. When trees are cut down, sloths will fall and hurt themselves. Some sloths live near human beings and they sometimes are hit by cars or killed by dogs.

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day?” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen’s ballet dress while Karen put Grace’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn’t dare to hand in her work.
At the same time, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can’t rely on copying what others are doing.”
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
"Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy(郎朗上口的) and meaningful way," said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, "A listen—and—repeat method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area."
Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C.depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, "I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids."Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I would speak English much better than now," HuaZhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you're still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

Just Around the Corner
I have a friend named Jim. He lived just around the corner from me. The days go by, and before I know it, a year is gone. I never see my old friend’s face. He knows that I miss him, too, as I used to ring his bell, and he rang mine, in the old days. If we were younger, things might be different, but now, we are busy, tired men. We are even tired of playing games.
“Tomorrow,” I said to myself, “I will call on Jim just to show that I am thinking of him,” But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, and the distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner! His house is only three miles away from here. One day a postman came. “Here’s a letter for you, sir.” he said. I opened it and was surprised. Jim died today. And that’s what we get in the end. Around the corner, a friend is gone.
So remember: If you love your friends and family, tell them and show your love to them. When you think that it is the right time, it might be too late.

In Chinese classes, many students can read a famous story called Yu Gong Moves a Mountain. Once upon a time, there was a very old man who was called Yu Gong. There were two mountains near his house. They were so high and big that it took a long time to walk to the other side. So the old man told his family that they should all help him to move the mountains. Then Yu Gong and his family began to move the earth and stone to the sea. Nobody believed they could move the mountains. One day, a man saw Yu Gong and his children when they were working on moving the mountains. He told Yu Gong that he would never make it because he was old and weak. As soon as the man finished talking, Yu Gong said that his family could continue to move the mountains after he died. His family would live and grow, but the mountains could not get bigger. So Yu Gong and his family kept on digging day after day and year after year. Finally, a god was so moved by Yu Gong that he sent two gods to take the mountains away. I and many other people in Britain love charity (慈善) shops because we can find them on every street. The charity shops sell all kinds of things and they are very cheap.
The first charity shop was opened by Oxfam in 1947. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favorite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross Shop. There I always find children's books, all 10 to 20 pence each. They are really cheap.
Most of the shop workers in charity shops are volunteers, but each shop has a manager and he can get some money. Every morning you see bags of things outside the shops. Some people bring and put them there without waiting for thanks. In fact, over 90% of the things in charity shops are from kind people.
All the money the shops get goes to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million pounds every year. The money is for sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and many others. In a charity shop you can get cheap but nice things. You might even feel special while shopping.
