Frm April t July f 2019, the explrers f Natinal Gegraphic's Okavang Wilderness Prject cntinued pushing their way int the unknwn zne in the Anglan highlands, the surce f the Okavang River, t explre the rivers and lakes that feed the delta, which run thrughut Angla, Namibia, and Btswana.
Steve Byes, an explrer frm Natinal Gegraphic, has been a prject leader since 2015, when the team began frmally describing the bidiversity(生物多样性) and characteristics f the Anglan highlands' rivers fr the first time. Since 2015, the team has crssed the Cuit and Cuanavale Rivers — tw branches f the Okavang River. On the latest trip, they explred the surce lakes f these tw rivers and then headed westward t the Cubang River — the upper reaches f the Okavang River.
The trip t the surce lakes was particularly unique. Althugh the team had been there befre, this was the first time that they wuld dive under the surface t view a hidden wrld. These lakes are surrunded by thick layers f peat (泥煤) that have gathered ver thusands f years, and have remained mstly undisturbed.
"We fund 96 species f fish in the surce lakes," says Adjany Csta, anther explrer frm Natinal Gegraphic. She explains this bidiversity has been unexplred until nw because the lcals never even fish there fr fd — they believe the lakes and rivers are ccupied by a snake-like mnster that prtects the habitat.
The Cubang River is quite different frm the Cuit and the Cuanavale. It is rcky and rugh, and unlike the thers, it has a well-travelled rad t its west, which brings cntact with peple.
