Slavery(奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored. This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration,we can see what society looked like during the period before the American Civil War.
The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and intelligent young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner. They decide to head to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, Whitechapel, doesn't agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped to death.
Why does Whitechapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth. We can figure it out. Whitechapel teaches young slaves to obey their masters. Therefore, his owner master respects him a great deal. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.
This belief is based on the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colorful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents change for the future, which his dad fears. Whitechapel's belief might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. Anxiety is the state of feeling nervous, worried or fearful. When you’re anxious. you may feel something bad is going to happen.
When you think of starting a new project or going into a group situation with people you don’t know, do you feel butterflies in your stomach? Do you come up with lots of reasons not to do fun but risky things like joining a hiking club or a volunteer organization? If these happen, it shows that you are probably anxious, and your anxiety will stop you from going after your dreams. Actually, anxiety feeds on avoidance and makes your less confident, while getting started and taking action help your anxiety go down. But where do you begin?
These suggestions below will let you be the master of your anxiety, rather than letting it master you.
▲Don't wait for your anxiety to go down
Your anxiety won’t go down on its own. However, when you take action towards your goals instead of considering what anxiety you have, you will build self-efficacy(自我效能) little by little-- you begin to see yourself as someone who can take action and be successful even when you’re feeling anxious.
▲Set a realistic goal that makes sense for you
We all have different personalities and preferences. We don’t all want to be lawyers, have hundreds of friends, or run marathons. Whatever you want, just figure out what is the simplest thing you can do to get started. Set your goal specifically, for example, "walk for 20 minutes three times next week". You can’t climb a mountain all at once and you’re more likely to achieve your goal with inside motivation than when you’re just trying to please others.
    ▲Trust the process(过程)
Faith is the first step to take action. Even if you don’t have faith to begin with, faith will come if you just take the first step. The more you take action, the more likely you are to have some successes and begin to trust the process. I often start writing a blog post not knowing exactly what I’m going to write. Now I’ve understood that if I share messages with my readers sincerely, then the content will appear naturally and anxiety will reduce slowly.

    C. you should achieve your goal by pleasing others.

If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare”, “ Samuel Johnson” and “Webster”, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn't even speak English --- William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain, lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose Language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this had lasted, English today would be close to German.
But this did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule(统治) over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of farmers. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a difference between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-saxon in its words. We even have different words for some food, meat in particular. Depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon farmers were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more "foreign" than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’s ambition.
    62. The two major languages spoken in Britain before 1066 were .
    A. Welsh and Scottish B. Nordic and Germanic
    C. Celtic and Old English D. Anglo- Saxon and Germanic
    63. Which of the following groups of words are from French?
    A President, lawyer, beef.
    B. President, bread, water
    C. Bread, field, sheep
    D. Folk. Field, cow
    64. Why is France less foreign than Germany to Americans on their first visit to Europe?
    A. Most advertisements in France are in English
    B. They know little of the history of the English Language
    C. Many French words are similar to English ones
    D. They know French better than German
    65. What is the main idea of this text?
    A. The history of Great Britain
