A
Los Angeles is always a popular holiday destination. To fully enjoy your travel there, you should know its food, weather, and also traffic. While driving in L. A. is similar to that in other areas, there are a few specific rules to note.
HOV lanes (车道)
On many L. A. freeways, one or more lanes at the far left are used as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. They usually have limited access and you can only enter or exit where there is a break in the double yellow line. Most HOV lanes require a minimum of two people in the car; some require three. Vehicles towing trailers (拖车) are NOT allowed in the HOV lane, regardless of how many people are in them.
Toll (收费) lanes
On certain freeways, the HOV lanes are double-purposed as toll lanes for people driving alone who have a FasTrak, an electronic toll collection system. Therefore, you also have to have one in that lane as a HOV, which is inconvenient if you’re just visiting. FasTrak is in effect on parts of the 110 freeway between the 405 and 10 freeways, and on parts of the 10 freeway east of Downtown L. A.
Cell phones
It is against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving without using a hands-free device. Holding a cell phone to your ear while driving will land you with a ticket.
Alcohol
Driving under the influence is taken seriously in L.A. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%, but you can be charged with lower levels if they show you can’t function normally. Placing an opened bottle of alcohol in the passenger area while driving (or sitting) is illegal. Any opened container of alcohol has to be transported in the trunk.
1. What do you know about HOV lanes?
A. They encourage people to share cars.
B. They are on the far right of freeways.
C. They are intended for larger vehicles.
D. They allow cars to enter over the double yellow line.
2. Which is surely against the road rules in L. A.?
A. Driving on the 110 freeway with a FasTrak.
B Putting the cell phone in the car while driving.
C. Riding with an opened bottle of alcohol in back seats.
D. Going below the blood alcohol limit of 0. 08%.
3. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A traffic law. B. A road map.
C. A guidebook. D. A report.
Most HOV lanes require a minimum of two people in the car; some require three. 故选A。
Placing an opened bottle of alcohol in the passenger area while driving (or sitting) is illegal. Any opened container of alcohol has to be transported in the trunk.
Los Angeles is always a popular holiday destination. To fully enjoy your travel there, you should know its food, weather, and also traffic.(洛杉矶总是一个受欢迎的度假目的地。
B
When you hear the word “birthmark”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips?” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.
In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality.
My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.
My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.
Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.
4. How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks?
A. She felt excited to show her difference.
B. She felt annoyed to give others an answer.
C. She was scared to be made fun of by people.
D. She was bored to be faced with the question.
5. Who has the similar birthmarks like the author?
A. Her mother. B. Her grandmother.
C. Her cousin. D. Her uncle.
6. What can be inferred about the author’s cousin?
A. She dislikes talking about her birthmark.
B. She never judges others by their looks.
C. She is more confident than the author.
D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
7. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Brilliant. B. Apparent.
C. Harmful. D. Impressive.
D 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据第二段中的“In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them”(在照片中,我常常撅起嘴巴来掩饰我的胎记。
根据第一段中的“For me, it’s different-I have them on my lips and inside my mouth”(对于我而言,这是不同的-我嘴唇上和嘴巴里面都有胎记。)
依据第四段中的“My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance”(我表姐也面临同样的挑战。
根据画线词后面“suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often...she wouldn’t be such a person as she is”(建议她应该多穿长袖......
C
One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in use of electronic tablets and smartphones is causing people to spend at least one hour less outdoors each day, so that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements(补充) to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.
Speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in Wales, geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements, I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day. Today, because I knew the sun wasn’t going to shine, I took an extra one,” he said.
Exposure to UV light from the sun is the major source of vitamin D. However, people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland. “The Scots are the palest people in the world…for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D,” he said, adding that life expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales. Multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than in England.
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong, and he said the fact that rickets, a bone disease, was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign of how changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm.
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long-time exposure to the sun were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could help in lowering blood pressure. “If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels(血管). So, get out in the sun while we still can.” He said.
8. How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the passage?
A. They are more sensitive to sunlight.
B. They take more vitamin D supplements.
C. They get less vitamin D than before.
D. They become addicted to electronic games.
9. What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements?
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Supportive.
10. Why are the Scots the palest people in the world?
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because they have short sunlight duration.
C. Because their blood pressure is very low.
D. Because they are easy to suffer multiple sclerosis.
11. What may be the best title for the text?
A Get out and gain more Vitamin D
B. Head for the beach and enjoy sunshine
C. Keep away from tablets and phones
D. Say no to vitamin D supplements
C 9. D 10. A 11. A
根据第一段中的“One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in use of electronic tablets and smartphones is causing people to spend at least one hour less outdoors each day, so that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements(英国一位最杰出的科学家表示,平板电脑和智能手机的使用增加,导致人们每天至少少花一个小时在户外,因此他们需要定期服用维生素D补充剂,以弥补他们自然获得的阳光不足)”可知,平板电脑和智能手机使用的增长导致人们待在户外的时间很少,以至于他们需要服用维生素D补充剂。
根据第二段中的“geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements, I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day…”(遗传学家史蒂夫·琼斯在威尔士的海伊文学节上发表讲话时表示,他自己就是这一事业的追随者,并敦促其他人效仿。
根据第三段中的“The Scots are the palest people in the world ... for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D(苏格兰人是世界上最苍白的人…… 此处需理解“cry out for”当于in great need意为“迫切需要”。再结合第三段第一句阐述的事实“太阳发出的紫外线是获取维生素D的主要来源”,以及第三段中的“people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland(人们花在户外的时间越来越少。 故选A项。
通读全文,文章开头讲现在电子设备使人们在户外时间越来越少,天然维生素D摄入越来越少,危害健康,以苏格兰人日晒少,脸色苍白,维生素D缺乏导致缺钙的严重性,后面讲述科学家支持补充维D,尤其是最后一段中的“If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels So, get out in the sun while we still can(如果你在沙滩上躺上一个小时,你的血压会下降10点左右,因为它会放松你的血管。 故选A项。
D
If you go to any college in the United States, you will find most students carrying the same items:books, laptops, cell phones and their official school identification cards, or IDs. These small plastic cards do more than showing the names and pictures of students.
In recent years, IDs in some colleges can also buy things. The schools enter into agreements with banks so students can link their cards to private financial accounts. This way, students can use their cards to pay for things like food on campus and school supplies. In other words, their IDs become debit cards(借记卡). However, new research suggests that the way these card programs operate can harm students.
The U.S. Public Interest Research Group(U.S. PIRG) aims to use research to support and protect people's financial interests. The organization has been looking into agreements between colleges and banks for several years. This April, Kaitlyn Vitez, higher education campaign director for U.S. PIRG, released their latest findings."Students with campus debit cards paid over $ 24 million in fees during the last contract year. For example, students may be charged fees if they use another bank to withdraw money. Or, they may be charged fees if they spend more money than they have in their bank accounts , " she said . " Any large fee can create unexpected problems for students , however , banks do not make possible fees clear enough to students."
U.S.PIRG noted that some banks pay colleges for permission to advertise their debit card programs on campus. The advertising can appear to be part of official school programmes and students may feel pushed towards opening accounts.U.S.PIRG also found a connection between colleges with paid agreements and student fees. Students at colleges that received money from banks ended up paying up to 2.3 times more than students at colleges with unpaid agreements. U.S. PIRG contacted several of the colleges in their latest research, yet they seem not to give satisfying comments.
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about ?
A. Potential harm of IDs. B. Additional use of IDs.
C. Students consuming habits. D. Students' financial condition.
13. What does the PIRG study find?
A. All banks pay for their bank card ads on campus.
B. Campus debit cards present high fees for students.
C. Many students like to use debit cards at college.
D. Colleges have signed illegal agreements with banks.
14. What do Kaitlyn Vitez's words imply?
A. Colleges benefit a lot from working with banks.
B Most students fall into heavy debts at college.
C. Banks give away students' financial privacy somehow.
D. Students lack enough information on their campus debit cards.
15. What will the author probably talk about in the following paragraph ?
A Solutions to the phenomenon. B. Future of school IDs.
C. Details of debit card programs. D. Response of some schools.
B 13. B 14. D 15. D
In recent years, IDs in some colleges can also buy things.
Students with campus debit cards paid over $ 24 million in fees during the last contract year. For example, students may be charged fees if they use another bank to withdraw money.
由倒数第二段最后一句banks do not make possible fees clear enough to students.
U.S. PIRG contacted several of the colleges in their latest research, yet they seem not to give satisfying comments.可知U.S.

Last Sunday, I watched the amazed FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup on TV. I jumped with joy as the Chinese team win the championship with eleven straight victory. The success is a timely but inspiring birthday gift to our country. Besides, it makes I understand the spirit of the Chinese women’s volleyball team — never give up, particular in difficult situations. This spirit dates back to early 1980s. At that time, young Lang Ping attracted the entire nation attention with her excellent performances on the court. Ever since then, almost four decades have been witnessed the rise and fall of the Chinese team. However, the spirit has inspired one generation to another, both within the team and across the country.
