    Amsterdam Destination Guide
Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
    Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
    If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums, including the Jewish Historical Museum, the Scheepvaart Museum and the botanical gardens.
    Money Saving Tips
◆Unless you really want to see the tulips (郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
◆Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
◆Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
◆Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife biologist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Because a rare disease is reducing the number of devils, Oddity and 14 others were raised on a preserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released into the wild.
Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species. The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife preserves.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading.
Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. Scientists are now figuring out their next move. According to Wise, the focus will soon shift to moving some of the healthy devils back to mainland Tasmania.
Wise says he is “excited to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD. It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve threatened species.”
    24. Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils?
    A. To prevent DFTD killing them out. B. To find out a treatment for DFTD.
    C. To control the DFTD spread in zoos. D. To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
    25. What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
    A. Its wildlife diversity. B. Its geographic location.
    C. Its natural resources. D. Its improved ecosystem.
    26. How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
    A. Their safety was uncertain. B. Their number was going up.
    C. They hardly enjoyed freedom. D. They recovered from DFTD.
    27. What does Wise think of the program?
    A. Fruitless. B. Risky. C. Successful. D. Demanding.

    C
Researchers from Purdue University have developed a new white paint that can reflect over 95 percent of sunlight, which can cool the surface even lower than the surrounding temperature. Painted on a building, the new paint could help cut cooling costs and energy use.
Many different reflective cooling paints have been developed over the years, but they all have their drawbacks. For the new study, the Purdue researchers developed a new method—using calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) fillers, which are much richer, cheaper, and absorb less ultraviolet (紫外线的) light. And the new reflective cooling paint can give off more sunlight—reflecting 95.5 percent of the light that strikes it. That’s better than many of the other paints in development, which manage between 80 and 90 percent, although it falls short of the record holder—the Teflon coating, which reflects 98 percent of light.
The team tested the new coating outdoors over two days, and showed that under direct sunlight it remained 1.7℃ below the surrounding temperature. In another set of tests, the researchers painted some parts of a pattern with the new paint, and others with a regular white paint of the same thickness. Using a special camera, they could see the pattern clearly, thanks to the difference in temperature between the two materials.
The team says that the new paint could not only help cool buildings, but prevent outdoor electrical systems from overheating. But to ensure that it is commercially practicable, the researchers next plan to investigate how well it lasts out in the environment.
“The cost of our paint may be comparable to other commercial paints or even lower than them,” says Xiulin Ruan, an author of the study. “The key is to ensure the reliability of the paint so that it is workable in long-term outdoor applications.”
    28. What’s does the underlined word “drawbacks” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Mistakes. B. Burdens. C. Disadvantages. D. Difficulties.
    29. How did the researchers study the effect of the new paint?
    A. By analyzing special pictures. B. By conducting field tests.
    C. By comparing costs of paints. D. By assessing its nature.
    30. What can we infer from the result of the research?
    A. The paint still needs testing. B. The paint can be used for long.
    C. The paint is incomparable. D. The paint has reliable performance.
    31. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A new white paint helps cool building. B. Researchers lower the costs of paints.
    C. A regular paint solves heat consumption. D. Environment-friendly paints are on sale.

    D
With greater climate catastrophe (气候突变) on Earth, it is natural for us to make every effort to stop the potential floods, snowstorms, and alarming reports from scientists. For many of us (myself included), part of that means running out to buy reusable straws, organic cleaners, and packaging-free products.
However, before you are delighted at “green” purchases, take a second to consider the results of a new study from Arizona University. By comparing the shopping habits, mental health and environmental impact of young people, the researchers reconfirmed a principle: Buying less beats buying “green” stuff without effort. And that is true whether you are looking at the impact that your purchases have on the Earth or on your own happiness.
It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less is better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory yields requires some resources to produce. Take plastic bag bans for instance. If your city is getting rid of single-use shopping bags, it can be attractive to pay for a fashionable organic cotton bag hanging in the check-out line of your local supermarket. However, experts insist that growing cotton is actually no better for the Earth than producing the conventional plastic bags. Then what is your best bet for carrying your groceries if you care about sustainability? Any bag you already own.
It is not just the Earth that will be happier if you buy less. You will feel more contented too, according to the new study. “People believe that they might well be self-satisfied about becoming environmentally conscious through ‘green’ buying patterns, but it doesn’t seem to be that way”, said the lead researcher Sabrina Helm. “Reduced consumption has effects on increased well-being, but we don’t see that with ‘green’ consumption.”
“Owning every new ‘green’ product on the market might make you feel contented, but if you relieve yourself of that burden of ownership, most people report feeling a lot better,” said Helm.
    32. Why does the writer mention “green” shopping habits?
    A. To call on a green lifestyle. B. To praise people’s green efforts.
    C. To introduce a social trend. D. To present a half true “green” truth.
    33. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
    A. The plastic bag bans are of no effect. B. Using any bag you have is the best bet.
    C. Reduced consumption is better for the Earth. D. Growing cotton is far worse for the Earth.
    34. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. The sense of achievement. B. The sense of happiness.
    C. The sense of relief. D. The sense of security.
    35. What might be the best title for the text?
    A. Less is More B. The Greener, The Happier
    C. Happiness Guarantee D. What Are Green Products?

From Mozart to pop music, tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write or draw. Many believe that music helps improve creativity. But an international study by a group of psychologists is challenging that viewpoint. 36
To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal (文字的) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room. 37 They found that background music significantly hurt the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. 38 Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lines, instrumental music, or music with familiar lines.
Dr. Melatchie and his colleagues conclude that music interferes with (干扰) the verbal working memory of the brain. 39 However, some may argue that the library background noises have seemingly no effect. The researchers explain that is because library noises create an environment of steady state that doesn’t interrupt concentration.
“ 40 Instead, they demonstrate that music, regardless of the presence of its content, consistently interrupts creative performance in insight problem solving,” the study reads.

    A. And this in turn holds back creativity.
    B. It has something to do with the positive reaction.
    C. They say that their findings indicate music actually blocks creativity.
    D. Then again, they were tested while music was played in the background.
    E. Before the experiment, the participants didn’t study the music they would listen.
    F. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower.
    G. To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music builds up creativity.

During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents’ house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play.” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we’re going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We’d first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we’ll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot. It was so small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.

    第二节:
Then the teacher guided us into a classroom. The classroom was so small, about thirty children sitting in it, making it extremely crowded. I found most of the students wearing worn-out clothes and having no school supplies except some old books and pencils. Immediately, I felt sympathy for them. After the teacher introduced us to them, all the children were wild with joy and told us the things they had wanted for long. My mom made a list of them.
Holding the shopping list, my mom and I headed for a store. There I helped my mom pick up the things on the list. I decided to buy something for the children with my own pocket money, for which my mom praised me a lot. I also added some candies to our supplies. These children were so grateful when receiving the gifts. Some of them started reading the picture books and sharing the candies right away. Seeing their smiling face, I learned doing something meaningful for others could also be a wonderful thing.

    W: Yes, gaining weight.
M: No, not that. Have you heard about brain freeze?
    W: No, what’s that?
M: For many people, eating ice cream or drinking an icy drink too fast can produce a terrible headache. It usually hits in the front of the brain. People also call it “ice cream headache”.
W: Okay. I see. You know what? After all these years, you sound more and more like my father.
    Text 7
W: Mike, what lessons did you have at school this morning?
M: We had art, but we didn’t go to the classroom. Ms. Green took us to visit the museum in town.
W: How come? What did you do there?
M: We looked at paintings by famous artists.
W: I wish I had been with you. Did anything attract you?
M: A lot. But my favorite painting was by Picasso. It looked very strange.
W: Did Ms. Green explain something about the paintings?
M: Yes, and after that we made pictures for a competition. I drew a picture of Ms. Green. It looked like a Picasso painting.
    W: Did she like it?
M: Ms. Green wasn’t very pleased, and she thought it dull. So, I didn’t win.
    Text 8
M: Cindy, as a working mother, how do you balance work and family?
W: It takes skills. It’s an art, I should say. But raising a kid while working is not as hard as most people think.
M: You mean it’s not difficult?
W: No, if you know how to share your responsibilities properly. My husband does more housework, and I take more care of our kid. I try to spend as much time with our kid as possible. She joins me in my daily activities.
    M: What do you mean?
W: Working as a model, I do a lot of exercise every day to stay fit, and I encourage our kid to do it with me. It’s like play to her. As a result, I’m fit, she’s fit, and we spend time together.
M: I see. What else do you do together?
W: Things like reading picture books and going to the park.
M: I really like your ideas.
    Text 9
M: Nice to meet you, Jennifer. Can you tell us a few things about yourself? Perhaps your work experience.
W: I’m a university student in my final year, and I major in English. I’ve had several part-time jobs, including office work and sales.
M: What was your office work about?
W: I worked at the reception desk and did some paperwork.
M: What did you learn there?
W: I received phone calls and met customers most of the time. And I supported staff from different departments at times. So, I learned to deal with various kinds of people.
M: Did you apply any of the knowledge you got at university?
W: Yes, I think I did use some of the language knowledge.
M: What has been your worst experience at work?
W: Well, once I met a customer who came to make a complaint. I tried my best, but he was just being unreasonable. I had to refer him to my manager. It was a hard day.
M: Okay. Now, do you have any questions for us?
W: No, not at the moment.
M: Thank you, Jennifer. We have a number of people applying for this position, and we will call you with our decision within two weeks.
    W: Okay, thank you.
