A woodcutter started a new job at a timber(木材)company. The pay and work conditions were quite good. Since the company was treating him well, the woodcutter worked as hard as he could.
His boss gave him an axe and showed him where he was supposed to work. On his first day, the woodcutter cut down 18 trees. “Congratulations,” his boss said. “Keep going!”
Encouraged by his boss’ words, the woodcutter worked even harder the next day, but could only cut down 15 trees. The third day, he tried even harder, but only cut down 10 trees. Day after day, he was cutting down fewer and fewer trees.
“I must be losing my strength,” the woodcutter thought. He went to his boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.
“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” his boss asked.
“Sharpen? I have no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut down trees.”
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to sharpen our “axe”. In today’s world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but also less happy than ever.
Why is this? There’s nothing wrong with activity and hard work. Probably it is because we have forgotten how to stay “sharp”. We have forgotten to continuously improve our skills so we lose our efficiency. Then we leave ourselves in a busy state and become stressed. We will feel less happy.
So remember, always take the time to sharpen your “axe” and don’t become “blunt”.

There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this: “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people’s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods. Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archeologists (考古学家) search for ancient objects to help deepen knowledge of the past.
Volunteers also work in many areas around the world, including Hati. Years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquake lined in temporary (临时的) shelters for more than 3 years. Former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.
Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example. Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe how much rubbish was ruining (摧毁) some of the area’s most beautiful sights. Ms Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. Soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Ms Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group’s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young Englishwoman says the Indian media started calling her “Garbage Girl”. If you live in north China, you probably noticed that the central heating(集中供暖)was shut off recently. This is something that really surprised me when I first moved to Beijing over 10 years ago.
In the US, most homes have central heating. People can turn it on whenever they like. This heating system uses gas or electricity. We have to pay a gas or electricity bill each month. Heating our homes is part of that cost.
Still, in the countryside, some people burn some wood to stay warm during winter. My family did this for many years. Every year, my parents would order wood, which would be sent to our home. I had to go outside to chop the wood. I would bring it inside every morning to put in our wood stove(炉子). We did this because it was much cheaper than gas or electric heating. It was also a good way for me to learn responsibility and the importance of hard work at a young age.
