Q:At recess (课间休息), I don’t know what to do because all my friends are playing games. I don’t like or don’t want to play. So I end up standing by myself at recess doing nothing. What should I do? Alex Rider, 13, Bloomfield, N.J. |
A:In fact, recess was my least favorite part of the school day for Grades 1 to 5. I was never really into playing kickball. So, like you, I spent many days at recess standing alone. Take advantage of the extra time you have, I learned that reading a book is the best way to pass time, especially if it is sunny. Books are good for a lonely recess, because they take you out of your world and into another. If reading isn’t your thing, then try making new friends. Some other things I would do at recess were chess and paper cutting. Those might be worth trying. Maybe the teacher who is watching over all the kids needs someone to talk to as well. Whatever you want to do, don’t let your time go to waste. Johnny Hayes, 15 |
A:Do you believe in time travel, Alex? Because you just dragged me 40 years into the past. When I was 13, half my friends threw themselves into kickball at recess which was too vigorous (剧烈的) for me right after lunch. So, like you, I stood around a lot. Then, one day, my teacher, Susie, asked me, “What do you want to do?” I had no answer for her. But suddenly, it came to me: marbles! I asked a few friends, and they were happy to join me. Now. I’m not suggesting you play marbles, only that you consider what you feel like doing and can make you happy. And one last idea: There’s no harm in trying games your friends are playing that you think you won’t like. You might just surprise yourself. Philip Galanes, adult |

When your pen is broken, the battery(电池)in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover(剩的)food, what do you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all kinds of rubbish need to be sorted(分类)separately.
Rubbish sorting is a big issue(议题)worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it. Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account(账户)” service for its residents(居民). Account holders get points by; sorting, thew rubbish correctly. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards .and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Wet waste is also known as household waste. Paper, metal and glass are recyclable waste. Medicine and batteries are harmful waste. Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin. Many other Chinese cities are also doing this. Shenzhen has been sorting its rubbish into the same four groups since 2012. Students there must study waste-sorting guidebooks.
If you don’t sort your rubbish, it will go to a landfill(垃圾填埋场)and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground. Some rubbish can pollute the soil and groundwater and it can also do harm to the environment around us. China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go.

The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals(信号). We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it's okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn't they have been prettier colors?
Well, it's important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn.As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it's been that way ever since.
Red has always been a color that mean danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it's the color with the longest wavelength(波长)so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colors.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don't get so mad at them, they've certainly come a long way.
31. What were traffic signals for before traffic lights for cars?
A. Trains. B. Boats. C. Planes. D. Bicycles.
32. Which of the following colors meant go at first?
A. Red. B. Yellow. C. White. D. Green.
33. Why does red mean danger?
A. Because it's the brightest color. B. Because it can be seen far away.
C. Because railway companies say so. D. Because it has the shortest wavelength.
34. Why are school buses painted yellow?
A. Because yellow is a prettier color. B. Because yellow once meat danger.
C. Because yellow can be seen well in daytime. D. Because yellow means it's OK to go forward.
35. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. How important traffic lights are. B. Which color has the longest wavelength.
C. What red, yellow and green can be used for. D. Why traffic lights are red, yellow and green.
【答案】31. A 32. C 33. B 34. C 35. D

If the teacher is called "killer" by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades. There is another thing after you select the subjects and teachers. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about $30—50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.
