Afternoon was Mrs Conroy's favorite time of day. After a hard day at work, her eyes were tired and her feet hurt. She enjoyed the nice long nap she took on the bus. Mrs Conroy had made friends with the bus driver, Mr Angstrom. He always woke her up before her stop. She usually felt fresh as a daisy(精神饱满的) when she got off the bus.
But today was different. Mr Angstrom wasn't driving. A small man in a wrinkled uniform sat in the driver's seat.
“Where's Mr Angstrom?” asked Mrs Conroy, dropping her money into the box. “I don't know. Sick, I guess. I just work here, lady. Step to the rear.” Mrs Conroy hoped that Mr Angstrom was all right. She didn't like this new driver. She decided not to sleep on the way home today. She didn't want to ask this driver to wake her up. He didn't look like the type who'd want to do anyone a favor.
Mrs Conroy looked out the window. It was a warm afternoon. Though she tried to keep her eyes open, the gentle rocking of the bus had a lulling effect. Within a few minutes her eyes closed. Her head dropped to her shoulders. In spite of herself, Mrs Conroy fell fast asleep.
The next thing Mrs Conroy knew, a hand was on her shoulder. Someone was shaking her awake. “Wake up, lady. We've come to the end of the line. Wake up.”
Mrs Conroy blinked and opened her eyes. The bus driver looked down at her. “I said, this is the end of the line, lady. Time to get off the bus.” Mrs Conroy peered out the window. “Where am I?” she asked. “I was supposed to get off at Essex Avenue.” “You're at the last stop, lady. Come on, get off the bus. I have a schedule to keep to.”
Mrs Conroy was having trouble waking up. She staggered to her feet. The bus driver took her arm and helped her down the aisle. As she stepped off the bus, she felt a sense of panic. “Wait a minute,” she said in a shrill voice. “This isn't Essex Avenue. Where am I? How can I get home?”
“Cool off, lady. I told you, you're at the end of the line. We all make it here sooner or later.”
“But why can't I ride back with you?” she pleaded. “I have the fare!”“Sorry, lady,” he said as he closed the door. “It's against the rules.”
Mrs__Conroy__watched__the__bus__disappear__down__the__road. She looked around and tried to figure out what part of the city. She couldn't get her bearings. There was nothing to see in any direction. Nothing at all. Mrs Conroy wondered if she were still dreaming.

If going on vacation and taking time off from your usual workouts fills you with panic, don't fear. A training break can actually boost your fitness progress, according to Luke Worthington, a personal trainer.
He told Insider that it's actually when we're resting that we make gains. “Something that not every exercise enthusiast realizes is that we don't get fitter, stronger, lose body fat, or build muscle while we train,” he said. “All of those things happen in the time when we recover in between workouts, and most of those things actually happen when we sleep.”
“When we work out, we cause damage to both our bodies and our nervous systems. When we rest, our bodies repair themselves and get stronger so we can deal with that stress better next time,” Worthington said.
“If we have been working out regularly and effectively, then taking a planned break while on holiday can actually be one of the most physiologically beneficial things we can do,” he said.
However, if you've been exercising sporadically and struggling to get into a routine, a break may disrupt your rhythm. In that case, working some movement into your vacation may be beneficial for creating healthy habits.
While physiologically taking a break from training is “nothing to worry about,” according to Worthington, keeping active can be a good idea for your mental health.
Some people benefit psychologically from a break, but others can benefit from adding some movement to a vacation. Worthington recommends sticking to low intensity steady state exercise, like walking or swimming, to gain the mental rewards while also giving your body a chance to recover.
“If you can't talk while doing your exercise, it's too intense,” Worthington said, and he advises doing no longer than 40minute sessions.
“If your main reason for exercise is physical fitness, don't worry about it!” Worthington said. “If your main reason for exercise is emotional wellbeing, then don't set yourself back by taking an enforced break, but do dial it back to lower intensity work to allow you to physically rest, but still maintain your wellbeing.”
( )28. What's Worthington's opinion on working out during vacation?
A. Ambiguous. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
( )29. What does the underlined word mean?
A. Consistently. B. Regularly. C. Severely. D. Occasionally.
( )30. What's Worthington's advice on taking exercise?
A. Taking exercise with low intensity regularly.
B. Forming the habit of taking intense exercise.
C. Taking a physical rest for your mental health.
D. Adding outdoor activities to the working out list.
( )31. What's the best title of this article?
A. Time off can be great for muscle gains
B. How to keep healthy while on vacation
C. Frequent rest helps you maintain fitness
D. The benefit of working out during holiday
D
Being named a UNESCO World Heritage site is the__ultimate__feather__in__the__cap for travel destinations. Along with the fame increased popularity, and tourism dollars, the designation brings greater responsibility—both in heritage preservation and sustainable development. More locations are trying to change how travellers interact with these heritages, and will, hopefully, increase the flexibility of these sites in the face of growing environmental impacts and overtourism.
Anyone who's been to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu knows just how busy its crown jewel, the Inca Citadel, can get. Peru's Ministry of Culture announced last year it would be limiting capacity numbers.
Reduced tourism during the pandemic allowed the team to build new routes to better distribute travellers that currently crowd the site. In the future, with new routes and realtime monitoring of possible impacts, they hope to increase the capacity up to almost 6,000.
Tourists behaving disrespectfully (lying down in the grass, running, shouting, eating, and whistling are all against the rules) is still a major concern. Bastante says they're hoping to address this by carrying out visitor fines, reducing the maximum group size from 16 to 12,and building a new visitor center.
In Greece, as climate changeinduced flames rage closer to the ancient sites of Olympia and the Acropolis of Athens, intergovernmental organizations are pushing to use new technology to save UNESCO World Heritage sites from natural disasters. The UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Hellenic Group on Earth Observation teamed up to launch a new global platform this spring, which will use realtime satellite data, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence to quickly identify the presence of wildfires, floods, and landslides near heritage sites and create postdisaster assessments to better shield vulnerable places.
“This is now the era when most countries are trying to build national adaptation plans due to climate change but in most of these plans, the cultural heritage piece is missing,” says Evangelos Gerasopoulos, director of the Greek GEO office. “Symbolically, we are trying to use Ancient Greece, the cradle of western civilization, to mobilize efforts. If we forget the past, we're doing nothing for our future.”
( )32. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase in the first paragraph?
A. An important aim. B. A great reputation.
C. An intense pressure. D. A unique achievement.
( )33. What measures will be taken to protect the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu?
A. Reducing the opening time of the Inca Citadel.
B. Limiting the number of tourist group to sixteen.
C. Fining those who damage the objects in Citadel.
D. Constructing new travel routes and tourist centers.
( )34. What can we infer from what Evangelos Gerasopoulos said?
A. Protecting cultural heritages is meaningful for our future.
B. Climate change has influenced the cultural heritages greatly.
C. We have developed the awareness of protecting cultural sites.
D. Most countries plan to protect the sites despite climate change.
( )35. What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To call on visitors to participate in protecting heritages.
B. To make us realize the importance of cultural heritages.
C. To tell us what measures have been taken to protect heritages.
D. To persuade us to apply new technologies to protect heritages.

Last December, on a Saturday afternoon, three kids were laughing as they took turns riding a scooter(滑板车) on their quiet street in Wichita Falls, Texas. 11yearold TJ Smith had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbor Kim, age 7, claimed her turn and her sister Julie, 9, looked on. Kim stood on the scooter and paused to catch her breath. That was when the bearded man with a head of messy curls appeared. The kids didn't see where he came from, but they know exactly what happened next: Without uttering a word, he picked Kim up off the scooter and calmly walked away.
“He cradled her like a baby and just walked down the street,” says TJ. In fact, the calm way the man held Kim led TJ to believe he must have been a relative. But something wasn't right. “I could see her face,” TJ said. “She was scared.”
Kim's fear increased and cried for help. She began kicking and flailing, trying to get free of the man's grip. “What are you doing?” Julie shouted. But the man, unfazed(泰然自若的), walked the length of the block until he reached an alley and disappeared.
TJ's first impulse was to chase after them. But what was a fourfoottall, 70pound kid going to do to stop a grown man? “I wanted to help, but I couldn't do it myself,” he says. So he ran to his grownup neighbor, Brad Ware's home.
“Brad!” yelled TJ. “A man just picked up Kim and took her into the alley!” And just like that, TJ was gone, back on the street sprinting after his abducted(被劫持的) little friend. “I ran back to where I saw him take her to see if they were still there,” says TJ. Ware jumped into the car and trailed close behind.
TJ ran to the end of the street and turned the corner. He had no idea what to expect or who might be waiting for him. But he needed to find Kim.
Once TJ hit the alley, he spotted the man a couple of blocks down, standing in front of an abandoned white house. He was pushing the panicked girl through a window.

第一节
Dear Locke,
I'm Li Hua, a senior three student. Knowing that you are a helpful psychologist, I'm writing to consult you about some problems I have come across, hoping to get help from you.
There are quite a few headaches flooding to my mind. What annoys me most is that whenever I felt hungry, I would eat snacks like chips or candies without normal meals. Apart from this, I'm easily satisfied with what I am and what I have done. I read books only for school. I always hesitate to work out, keeping myself indoors. All the above have made me suffer a lot. I am wondering if you could recommend some effective methods of getting out of the habit to me.
I would be grateful if you can give me some positive response.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua

Ware kicked the man and wrapped him in his arms. The man got rid of Ware and fled across the street. Ware chased after him and took hold of him when he tripped over.

Meanwhile, officers arrested the kidnapper. Later, this incident was reported. Though admitted that he was scared, TJ said he never thought about the danger to himself. Ware insisted that the quickthinking 11yearold boy deserves most of the credit. “You know, it's his bravery that saves a little girl from the unimaginable,” Ware told the press.

Text 1
M: What do you think of my chicken recipe, Mary? Can you guess what the special ingredient is?
W: Wait... I can feel my tongue going numb... Ah! Quick, give me some water!
Text 2
M: I won't be coming for dinner at this restaurant again, even if it is cheap. They use throwaway plastic cups and straws.
W: I don't understand why they still do that sort of thing when they know how bad it is for the planet.
Text 3
W: That looks really difficult to put together, Jeff. Do you need any help?
M: Sure. If you could just hold the wing in place while I apply this glue, that would be great.
Text 4
M: So, after the man's car hit yours, you hit your head on the wheel?
W: That's right. It's all there in the police report. Do you think we have a good case?
M: Yes, but it depends on who had a green light.
Text 5
M: I didn't know this passage went so far underground. Do you remember the way back?
W: I think so, but we should probably go back to the entrance. My flashlight is almost dead, and we don't want to get lost down here.
Text 6
M: Wow! There were a lot of twists and turns on that ride. Are you OK?
W: I'm fine. I just need a moment to find my balance.
M: Take your time. Did you see the people sitting in front of us? I don't think that man's girlfriend liked it very much.
W: No wonder. I heard her say that she often gets carsick before she got on that.
M: That happens to me sometimes when I am on the water.
W: Let's get something to eat. I could use a break from all the excitement.
M: Good idea. My neck hurts.
Text 7
M: It's crazy to think that some people don't believe in climate change.
W: I know. There were record high temperatures in California last year. Florida suffered from the heat and was always hit with more heavy hurricanes, while Illinois was experiencing freezing temperatures.
M: I heard someone say the climate can't be warming, because there are still places with extremely low temperatures. Is that true?
W: Perhaps they are confusing weather and climate. Weather is measured over a short period of time, and climate is the measure of longterm temperature patterns. And our climate is experiencing higher and higher averages in temperature every year.
M: Do you think this rise in temperature directly affects forest fires, hurricanes, and snowstorms?
W: Scientists believe so. As of now, they can't say if it actually causes more hurricanes, but they are certain it affects their power.
Text 8
M: I like modern movies but some of my favorites are the old ones.
W: You mean cowboy films and war films from the 1940s and 1950s?
M: No, even older than those—the comedies from the 1920s.
W: Ah, that was at the start of the movie industry.
M: They were very funny. Some of the difficult actions they did were amazing.
W: Yes, and they actually did all those dangerous things. There were no special effects and no persons who did those things in place of actors in those days.
M: Those actors must have been very brave and very fit. Were they theater people or sportsmen?
W: A lot of them had worked as circus performers.
M: Have you seen the one where a man is nearly hit by a train? And there's another where the front of a house falls on a man, but he is missed because he goes through a window.
W: The one I like most is where a man is swinging from a tall building.
M: I suppose it would be too expensive to make films like that today.
W: It would be too dangerous.

W: You said a strange thing on our walk today. You said you love to see things rotting. I'm curious to know why you said that.
M: It's nothing to get excited about, but I'm happy to explain. Nature is so clever in the way it makes some things rot away to nothing and then creates new life from what is left over.
W: But why did you mention it on our walk? We were in the forest at the time.
M: I saw some mushrooms growing on a fallen branch. They help recycle the dead wood, so that more trees and flowers can grow. It's a beautiful system.
W: Yes, nature is an expert recycler—and mushrooms can be as beautiful as flowers. Those little yellow ones were unusual—and do you remember the large orange ones? Best of all were the red ones.
M: I could look at things like that all day. The subject really interests me. We'll have to walk there again next Friday.
W: Thursday would be better for me.
M: I can't make it then. I have booked an appointment at the dentist. What about Saturday?
W: It's a date. We'll explore the magic of mushrooms.

Bose is an internationallyrecognized leader in audio equipment. Their music speakers and headphones are consistently ranked among the best in the industry. Now, Bose is using their successful brand to create hightech audio sunglasses called Bose Frames. They use Bluetooth technology so you can listen to music handsfree. There are two builtin speakers located by the ear. Switching between songs, answering calls and turning them on or off are easy. Just press the button below the front of the frames. To charge them, just attach your charger to the connection point on the inside of the frames. Although Bose Frames offer superior sound quality and eye protection, they are a little bigger than most sunglasses. They definitely aren't heavy—but they can look a little strange. However, if you are going for a run or enjoying the outdoors, they are a perfect companion. You'll be able to hear what's going on around you without bothering people nearby. You'll also have two styles to choose from: round or square. They are currently advertised at just $200, but you can get both styles for just $100 more. And if this kind of handsfree technology interests you, there is also the Bose Companion Speaker. Its Ushaped design fits comfortably around your neck. It has a battery that lasts 12 hours, and only takes 15 minutes to charge. At a price of $500, it's a little more expensive, but you won't find anything else like it.
