    Even thugh DEET remains the mst cmmnly used, and mst pwerful, msquit repellent (防护剂) ever develped, scientists are actively pursuing effective prducts based entirely n plant ils. While DEET is an effective cntact repellent, many peple dislike the ily feel and smell n their skin, and smetimes sme peple are sensitive t it. Cnsumers are always interested in alternatives t DEET and ther synthetic (合成的) repellents, s there are numerus natural repellents n the market.
    In my lab at Iwa State University, my team and I have been cnducting research n natural prducts as pssible insect repellents fr the past 20 years. In the past few years, three f my Ph. D.students have cntributed greatly t ur research by designing, synthesizing, purifying, characterizing and testing mre than 300 clsely related chemicals cming frm the best f natural repellents like citrnelll, menthl and thyml.
    These students have successfully tested these repellents against three species f dangerus msquites. The first grup f the new repellents act thrugh the air. These chemicals have a vapr actin that prvides prtectin. These are ptentially mst useful in backyards, parks, huses, barracks and hrse barns. The ther grup f the new repellents are the classic nes that stp insects frm standing n a treated surface, such as human skin, clthing r tents; sme researchers have cnducted testing n sme humans t cnfirm the effectiveness and identify the very best nes.
    The new repellents were designed and made frm the natural materials in plant essential ils. They maintain many f the advantages f the natural repellents: They are fully bidegradable (可生物降解的), with n eclgical cncerns r envirnmental wastes, and generally cnsidered safe like the thusands f types f plant essential ils used in the flavr and perfume industries. Hwever, thrugh testing will be cnducted t determine if they are truly nn-pisnus because there is still n enugh evidence.
