Recently I read a passage saying that kids need 12 hugs a day. The idea is that kids who are hugged that much are probably being shown and told how valuable they are. And let’s face it, not all kids get the same loving kindness at home, which affects their ability to lead full lives not just at home, but also in school. After all, when kids lack love, how can we expect them to do well in school?
That’s the question one school principal in Winterport, Maine recently wondered. Her brilliant solution? Self-talk mirrors.
Several weeks ago, a series of brightly colored mirrors with positive self-talk phrases appeared on the walls throughout the Leroy H. Smith School in Winterport. The elementary school’s principal, Dawn Moore, was inspired by a similar project she spotted online that aimed to promote different kinds of learners. Moore took this idea, adjusted it, and now it’s the talk of the town.
Moore says the mirrors allow students to literally remind themselves of their worth and their abilities every single day. “It is not reflective of how you did in class,” she says, “but reflective of whom you are and what you can be if you believe in yourself and love yourself.”
The mirrors all hang at eye-level with the students and were fixed in common spaces throughout the halls. And so far, the experiment has been a huge success with both kids and teachers. The hope is that they will remain a permanent fixture in the school.
What do the kids think of this project? At first, the students loved looking and making faces and silly actions but after the novelty of ‘look at me’was over, many students have been observed looking at themselves, proudly, reading the sentence above the mirror.
The staff at Leroy H. Smith plan to mix up the messages every few weeks in order to keep things fresh.
14.How does the author think of “the hug theory”?
A.Absurd. B.Reasonable. C.Doubtful. D.Traditional.
15.How did Moore get the idea of Self-talk mirrors?
A.She got inspired from her mirror.
B.Her staff made suggestions to her.
C.It was adopted from an online project.
D.She used the children’s natural love for beauty.
16.What is the purpose of self-talk mirrors?
A.To improve students’ speaking skills.
B.To make the school more beautiful.
C.To improve children’s self-confidence.
D.To let kids pay attention to their appearance.
17.What is used to encourage students in the project?
A.Inspiring words.
B.School’s awards.
C.Teachers’ encouragement.
D.Other children’s admiration.

I am a mother of three children and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was social study. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.
Soon after we were given the project, my husband, my youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son.
We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back way. I turned around and found there standing behind me were two poor homeless men with a horrible “dirty body” smell. The short gentleman, close to me, was “smiling”. His beautiful sky-blue eyes were full of light as he searched for acceptance. The second man played with his hands uneasily as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation(救赎). The short man just asked for a coffee because that was all they could afford.
I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray(餐盘).I then walked around the corner to the men’s table. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman’s cold hand. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said “Thank you”.
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down, my husband smiled at me and said, “That’s why God gave you to me, Honey. To give me hope.”
On the last evening of class, I turned in “my project” and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and we all knew that we need to heal people and to be healed.
I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. “LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS--NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.”
18.Why did the people around the author back away?
A.Because the second man stood playing with his hands.
B.Because the two homeless men were also waiting in line, with a bad smell.
C.Because the short gentleman was smiling to everyone around.
D.Because both men were poorly dressed and mentally ill.
19.After the author handed the meals to the homeless men, she _________.
A.regretted and cried B.turned in her project
C.went back to her husband and son D.talked with them for a while
20.What kind of woman do you think the author is?
A.Lovely B.Mature. C.Over-curious. D.Caring.
21.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.Poor as the homeless men were, they had their dignity.
B.The author felt we should know how to heal people.
C.The author’s husband was very proud of her.
D.What the author did to the men touched many people.
D
Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe? It seems like Mars, our closest neighbor, has inspired the most science fiction as the place where aliens are most likely to come from. Recent Mars probes (探测) have shown us that there is no life on that planet—at least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhere—after all, the universe is really big. A lot of scientific research is going on in the search for “extraterrestrial life”.
Think about it—why should the seven billion people on this little planet be the only living beings in the universe? It would, in fact, seem logical that this is not the case. So scientific research in this matter is based around the idea of finding other planets that have environments that can support life —environments similar to the Earth. The search is on for the evidence of the existence, or earlier existence of life: from very wise beings to simple organisms (有机物).
So far, there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life and therefore deserve closer attention. As for places within our own Milky Way Galaxy, it has been assumed over the decades that Mars and Venus, as well as some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, may have been hosts for life. Now, as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extra-solar planets, the chances of finding “alien” life forms are increasing.
There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life. In 2007, scientists discovered exoplanet Gliese 581c—and felt that its atmosphere was most suitable for supporting life. But further research revealed that it would not. Now, attention has been turned to Gliese 581d, at the outer edge of the star’s habitable zone. The main standards for deciding whether a planetary body can be life-supporting are atmospheric conditions which allow the existence of water. Gliese 581 is about 20. 4 light years away from the Earth, so even if life does exist there, the distance would mean that communication would be unlikely.
Having said this—who says alien life forms (if they exist) need water?
22.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Life existing outside of the Earth.
B.The evidence of the existence of life.
C.Other faraway planets in the universe.
D.Creatures known from science fictions.
23.What makes it possible for people to find “alien beings”?
A.Modern scientific theories. B.Atmospheric conditions.
C.Environments similar to the Earth. D.Advanced technologies.
24.From the passage, we know that _________.
A.the atmosphere of Gliese 581c was most suitable for life
B.it is not certain whether alien life forms need water or not
C.the 7 billion people on the Earth are the only beings in the universe
D.the distance of 20. 4 light years makes it impossible to find life on Gliese 581d
25.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Do Aliens Exist? B.Is Mars Suitable for Life?
C.Are Alien Life Forms Various? D.Can We Communicate with Aliens?

A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted(给---发短信) my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for.“This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We’re going camping in the forest!”
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (失望的叹息),which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.

第五部分:写作(共25分)
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service. I realized my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to connect myself with the outside world. I went from an unhappy state to anger. However, that couldn’t make my phone receive the signal. I went to bed angrily that first night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual, I fixed my mind on nature around myself. My dad and I hiked through the forest, enjoying nature. We went fishing and swimming. I listened to stories of Dad's life. When the vacation came to an end, I realized I hadn't thought of my phone once. It dawned on me that I needed to value the moments with nature and the important persons in life. With this lesson carried to this day, I regularly pack up the tent and drive until my phone shows words: “No service.”
