Twice every month, Miranda Sam, a 66-year-old Ghanaian, visited the China Traditional Herbal Hospital, a private herbal facility at Pokuase, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital, for treatment.

I was squeezing lemons, and when I finished, I could not get up or even move my legs, so I went to the hospital and did an X-ray examination, but they saw nothing. Meanwhile, I could not walk and was in a wheelchair,” the retired worker said. Hence Miranda decided to visit the herbal facility. On two occasions, I had to do acupuncture(针灸), and I have found great relief. Now I walk unaided, so I keep coming for treatment, she said.

As Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is gaining popularity in Ghana, many acupuncture clinics run by Chinese doctors pop up in the country. However, the China Traditional Herbal Hospital was established by 52-year-old Ghanaian business owner Bediako, after his fruitful encounter with the effects of TCM in 2012. With the help of a Chinese lady, Bediako set up a small clinic specializing in TCM. Years on, the facility has subsequently grown into a bigger herbal hospital. The hospital treats patients with a combination of local and Chinese herbal formulas. It supports this with the application of traditional Chinese medical methods.

Strokes(中风) account for 1.3 percent of all hospital admissions in Ghana, and 6.3 percent of all hospital deaths. But Bediako is confident that as more people with these conditions turn to the natural methods of healing, the pain and death rates would subside. A gentleman was brought here three weeks ago, who could not sit, stand, or walk. He was first taken through acupuncture. I observed him on camera 30 minutes later, squatting(), standing, and walking. You come here with your pain but will leave with a smile. That is our feature,” he said.

The hospital has started a second facility in Ashaiman near the capital, with plans to open other branches across the country to meet the growing demand.

    4. What can we learn from Miranda’s words in Paragraph 2?

    A. Her illness is not a bit severe. B. Squeezing lemons is a risky job.

    C. She is feeling better now.     D. She is unsure about what to do next.

    5. What do we know about Bediako’s hospital?

    A. It is located in the downtown area.

    B. It was originally a specialized clinic.

    C. It was established by a Chinese doctor.

    D. It uses nothing but Chinese herbs.

    6. What does the underlined word “subside” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Decline. B. Remain.     C. Climb.     D. Change.

    7. What’s the writer’s probable attitude towards the TCM in Ghana?

    A. Negative. B. Optimistic.   C. Uncertain. D. Concerned.

In a coffee shop, we usually hear someone saying, “Don’t worry; the cup is made of bioplastics!” These items are appearing everywhere, ensuring business owners and consumers feel good about the single-use items they are carrying around. The problem is that there’s a lot of misinformation about bioplastics—and unfortunately, bioplastics aren’t the perfect solution to the problem of plastic people think they are.

Anytime you add the term ‘bio’ or ‘plant-based’ to a product name or description, people automatically think that makes them good for the planet,” environment expert and consultant Shannon Kenny said. “But unless you have proper equipment to process and recycle these bioplastics, they can be just as harmful to the planet as traditional plastics.” In order for bioplastic items to break down, they need the perfect storm of gases, heat and airflow that is only provided by specific equipment. And since most of us probably don’t have the commercial equipment, we may not know what to do with the products.

Since they look like plastic, people often think they can be recycled, which isn’t true. According to Kenny, “Consumers often dispose of bioplastics in recycling bins, but it messes the whole process up. When bioplastics enter the plastic recycling stream, they’re difficult to identify and separate from the other plastics, which damages the entire recycling process and creates a low-grade recycled plastic.”

So if plastic isn’t great but bioplastics aren’t either, what should we use? The most sustainable solution in both the short term and the long run, though, is to avoid single-use items. The best choice is to bring your own cup to the coffee shop and your own cutlery to the office to eat your salad or out to dinner at your favorite fast-casual restaurant. And educate others—friends, family, and even your local coffee shop or restaurant owners—that these bioplastics aren’t as “green” as they may appear.

    8. What does Shannon Kenny think of bioplastics?

    A. They are environment-friendly.         B. They cost customers less to use.

    C. They increase the cost of production.     D. They are no better than common plastics.

    9. What is the challenge about bioplastics?

    A. They can’t be broken down completely.

    B. Consumers prefer to use traditional plastics.

    C. They can’t be processed or recycled properly.

    D. Consumers can’t tell them from other plastics.

    10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

    A. Add some background information.          B. Provide some advice for the readers.

    C. Summarize the previous paragraphs.          D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Why are bioplastics harmful?              B. Can bioplastics be widely used?

    C. Are bioplastics better for the planet?          D. How are bioplastics made pollution-free?

    D

Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities livable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.

Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.

The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts  came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the App didn't always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs,” explains Carter.

Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy (精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.

Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.

“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good," says Carter," We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem."

    12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A. The citizens' life.                       B. The city's reputation.

    C. The city's management.                  D. The benefits of technology.

    13. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program?

    A. They faced many technical obstacles.

    B. They couldn't serve all residents well.

    C. They were not supported by residents.

    D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed.

    14. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with?

    A. Maximizing the benefits of technology.

    B. Mixing approaches for solving problems.

    C. Giving full play to the power of residents.

    D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.

    15. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. A Smart City: More Than Just Tech             B. A City with Intelligent Facilities

    C. Joint-effort in City Construction                D. The Modernization of a City

Excellence is a form of currency. While a commitment to excellence can help you gain true wealth and realize the inbuilt value of your potential, a lack of commitment devalues potential and reputation.

If you are to become the person you were meant to be on the day you were born, do whatever you do with all your might.    16    If you accept being average and ordinary, life will make you average and ordinary.

17   But it has everything to do with decision, commitment and action. And excellence is a destination for anyone who appreciates, respects, and demonstrates hard work and good judgement!    18    So attempt to make every opportunity one of importance because every opportunity counts.

What is considered excellent today will become the minimum cost of admission tomorrow.

19    Obviously, the bar is constantly being raised. If you don't produce excellent results consistently, someone else will.

There is no mercy period for averageness, and you must have a zero tolerance policy for it. People expect the best.    20     So never relax the rules of excellence. When you come to terms with quality, you suffer physical and emotional withdrawal from your goals. You should have the belief that the efficiencies of your business and life are infinite, that everything can be improved upon, that every project can be completed in an excellent fashion. Why? Because when it comes to excellence, everything counts!

    A. Being average is a choice.

    B. You're only as good as your last performance.

    C. It creates confidence and enhances peace of mind.

    D. And we reduce them when we accept being average.

    E. If they can't get it from you, they'll find it elsewhere.

    F. You will never live longer than its importance and usefulness.

    G. Being world-class has nothing to do with size, education, or bloodline.

Once there was a ship travelling on the rough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the lifeboat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband, eyes filled with tears.”

The teacher stopped her story-telling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted. ”

Most students answered, “I hate you!”

After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.

The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted — Take care of our child.”

Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully, “Have you heard of this story before?”

Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven’t. But that’s what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.”

Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied, “Your answer is absolutely right!”

Then she continued, “Let’s take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship, her mother had already been diagnosed (诊断) with advanced illness and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.”

    读后续写

    One possible version:

Paragraph 1: In his diary, the man mentioned he wished to sink to the ocean with his wife but for their daughter he had to live. Without him, their baby daughter would become an orphan. After drowning himself in sorrow for a short time, he uplifted himself and learned how to raise a baby. Whenever faced with hardships, he would inspire himself with his wife’s words – “Take care of our child.” Seeing the little girl grow into a sunny, pretty girl with double love from both parents, the man knew he made it to keep his promise.

Paragraph 2: The story was finished and the class was silent. Nobody talked or laughed as usual. Instead, it seemed that every student was lost in deep thought, tasting the moving life story. The teacher was sure that the students were reflecting on their replies and that they had understood the moral of the story. Of the Good and Evil in this world, there are hidden secrets behind them.
