A customer stands on the other side of the counter at my work, eyeing the menu. “The food here is so caloric,” she complains, and then looks at me. “You don’t eat here, do you? It certainly doesn’t look like it.” My face turned red.
I’m not quite used to how others see me. Since June 2018, I’ve lost almost 50 pounds. When I made the choice to change my body physically, everyone around me told me that I would be happier: Skinny meant pretty, and pretty meant happy and satisfied. After looking through dozens of before-and-after changes on Instagram and other social media, I was more eager to make myself smaller, to better fit into the world. But none of that happened. I didn’t feel more whole, or more peaceful. More than anything, I felt lied to.
Human health is unbelievably complex, and there’s so much more to our well-being than caloric balance. For several months, I often felt very tired and got angry easily, convinced that my body was a machine and I had to hard-wire it to look as physically perfect as possible. But at the end of the day, I realized that saying no to my body’s natural desire only left me feeling upset.
Our world is filled with losing weight. Nearly every time I listen to the radio, I hear some ads criticizing empty promises of giving you a better body, achieved only by this gym membership/ this prepackaged Keto shake/ this waist trainer. These all live by the same message: That food is dangerous, and the less we eat, the better off we are. In extreme cases, this message can lead to eating disorders, which will affect over 30 million people in their lifetimes, according to the Body Image Therapy Center.
These ideas could not be further from the truth. We eat food for a reason: It gives us energy, it keeps our body functioning, and it makes us human. I urge everybody to adopt a diet based on sustainability (可持续发展), to eat for energy, based on what makes us happy. We all deserve healthy relationships with food and mindful eating is the best place to start.
4.How did the author feel when hearing the customer’s words?
A.Quite proud.
B.A bit angry.
C.Rather guilty.
D.A little embarrassed.
5.Why did the author desire more strongly to lose weight later?
A.She was laughed at by others.
B.She got encouragement from her family.
C.She was attracted by pictures on the Internet.
D.She got tired easily when being overweight.
6.What did the author think of her weight loss experience?
A.It made her disbelieve others.
B.It did harm to her well-being.
C.It helped lift her confidence a bit.
D.It taught her about determination.
7.What is the problem with the ads mentioned according to the author?
A.They are far from creative.
B.They hurt human’s relationships with food.
C.They cause many people to do too much exercise.
D.They mislead some youths into having wrong ideas of beauty.

One of the most endangered species, the Hainan gibbon, is barely surviving. Only 30 remain on the planet, all restricted to a single forest on China's Hainan Island. "Because the species is so precious, each gibbon's survival is vital," says Bosco PuiLok Chan, who manages the Hainan Gibbon Conservation Project.
In the forest, the gibbons use their long arms to swing from tree to tree, enabling them to easily gather forest fruits. They're fearful of moving on the ground, which is why decades of forest fragmentation from cutting down trees and agricultural activities has separated groups from one another, causing them to slowly die out.
So after typhoon Rammasun caused a severe landslide in May 2015, destroying more of the gibbons' habitat and opening gaps that worsened previous tree losses, Chan and colleagues took emergency action. They employed professional tree climbers to fix one artificial rope bridge over the damaged section of forest. The bridge consisted of two mountaineering-grade ropes strung over a 50-foot-wide gap between trees.
A new study brings welcome news: Gibbons are using the bridge, suggesting that this strategy can be used elsewhere in the forest to help the animals move around, co-author Chan says. “At first, the gibbons acted as if they hadn't seen the bridge, so after waiting176 days,” Chan says, “it was a pleasant relief when the gibbons finally used it.”
“As we divide the world into smaller and smaller pieces with roads and other constructions, it's important to think about solutions for keeping connectivity between habitats,” says Gregory, who wasn't involved in the study. She adds the bridge could inspire other conservationists working to protect rare forest animals. Chan agrees but reminds that rope bridges are only a short-term fix. “Finding ways to restore natural forest should be a priority,” says Chan. “That is the most effective and long-term solution for conservation.”
8.What life habit speeds gibbons' dying out?
A.Moving slowly. B.The preference for fruits.
C.Living in separated groups. D.The fear of living on the ground.
9.Why did Chan's team fix the rope bridge in the forest?
A.To block out tree climbers. B.To prevent more tree losses.
C.To connect separated habitats. D.To lessen the effect of landslide.
10.What was gibbons' reaction to the rope bridge at the beginning?
A.They ignored it. B.They were afraid of it.
C.They made good use of it D.They showed curiosity for it.
11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.'The number of gibbons is decreasing quickly.
B.Better solutions are needed to protect gibbons.
C.Chan thinks poorly of the effect of rope bridges.
D.Chan disagrees with Gregory in gibbon protection.

A study of 100 mobile apps for kids found that 72 broke a law aimed at protecting children's online privacy. Researchers developed a tool that can determine whether a mobile app follows the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act(COPPA). The tool was 99%right. Researchers continue to improve the technology, which they plan to make available for download at no cost.
When you download an app, it can get a lot of information on your cellphone. You have to keep in mind that all this information can be collected by these apps and sent to third parties. What do they do with it? They can pretty much do anything. We should be careful about this. Apps can get personal identifiable information, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, locations, audio and visual recordings, and unique identifiers or devices such as an international mobile equipment identity(IMEI), media access control(MAC) addresses, Android IDs and Android advertising IDs. The advertising ID, for example, allows app developers to collect information on user’s interests, which they can then sell to advertisers. What's worse, games and other apps that violate COPPA cause privacy risks that could make it possible for someone to determine a child's ID and location. A bad man could probably get the user's email ID and geographic location and try to kidnap the child.
COPPA requires that websites and online services directed to children get parental agreement before collecting, personal information from anyone younger than 13; however, as the research found, many popular apps do not follow the rule. Researchers found that many popular games designed specifically for young children showed users’. Android IDs, Android advertising IDs and device descriptions. Researchers suggest that parents should be careful when downloading or allowing children to download apps. They advise keeping downloads to a minimum. Don't download apps unless they need to.
12.What is the matter with most mobile apps for kids?
A.They lead children to do wrong. B.They are too expensive for kids.
C.They collect children's private information. D.They are too difficult to operate.
13.What can we learn about the testing tool?
A.It will be put online for sale. B.Parents will get it for free.
C.Apps will find ways to deal with it. D.Researchers will give it up after the study.
14.What will apps do with kids' privacy?
A.They will send it to others. B.They will publish it online.
C.They will keep it a secret. D.They will use it in social surveys.
15.What is the researchers' advice to parents about downloading apps?
A.Downloading as few apps as possible. B.Downloading as many apps as required.
C.Downloading no apps from the Internet. D.Downloading apps that COPPA identifies.

第二节 (满分25分)

Sometimes things may seem beyond our efforts, but keep on and you will find beautiful views in front of you.
I was on my second outdoor experience trip that every student had to go on. That year, we had a choice of what difficulty level we wanted: one through five. My friends and I had agreed that one would make us seem lazy and that challenging ourselves would make for a good story. In choosing level two, we believed that it would still be a fun experience.
We were quickly proven wrong.
The further we drove into the White Mountains, the higher the walls on either side of the winding highway grew. I was still in awe of the mountains I had seen so many times before, but I couldn’t help feeling my heart shaking with anxiety. Soon I would have to leave the school bus that brought 50 students out into the wilderness like every year before.
My group consisted of my friends, Riley and Ann, and six extremely athletic boys. We arrived at base camp lodge (木屋) first. After putting things aside and rearranging our bags, we made our way out into the wilderness.
The three of us girls were questioning if this was really a level two. The path was unbelievably steep (陡峭) and rocky toward the top of the mountain where the first hut was located. We were practically jogging in an attempt to keep up with the boys ahead of us. Before the trip, we were told to take breaks as often as we needed to drink water, but that wasn’t helping our pounding hearts and heavy breathing as much as it should have.
Then, 30 minutes into the most difficult hike the three of us had ever done, Riley slipped and landed on her knee. After a few moments, we turned back down the mountain as it was decided that Riley could not make the trip with us. We sat on the grass outside the lodge where we had started while Riley was brought inside to join the level one group. Ann and I exchanged breathless glances, our cheeks red and wet with sweat.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Do you think we should ask if we could join the level one group too?” I asked Ann.
