52-year-old Chinese coral biologist Huang Hui has spent half her life recreating the spectacular scene in her memory: vast stretches of Colorful corals thriving on the seabed of the South China Sea.
Covering less than two-thousandth of the space in the ocean, coral reefs provider shelter for more than a quarter of the world's sea creatures. However, the coral cover area has been declining in the past few decades. Global warming is the reason for the decline adding impact to other human activities such as over-exploitation and coastal development.
Xisha Islands in the South China sea was once a paradise for fish and sea plants. It is now silent in the water there because the coral reefs are in critical situation. To help the coral community recover, Huang decided to plant corals under the sea. Huang and her team first bred coral seedlings in a nursery, and then transplanted them to the seabed. Different types of corals were chosen according to the various seabed conditions.
However, growing corals on the seafloor is not an easy job weather conditions are one of the most major variables that influence coral planting. Wave, height 2 meters or more can be dangerous, because the divers find moving around underwater difficult and the small diving boat can easily be blown away.
Seasickness is another great challenge.“The journey to a coral plantation area usually takes four days, but it took six days last time because of the strong wind. 1just lay in the bed and moved up and down with the boat, which made me feel sick,” she said.
Their efforts have paid off. Since 2000, Huang and her team have planted 120,000 to 150,000 corals, covering 20,000 square meters of seabed of the South China Sea.
“The underwater ecosystem needs time to recover. Planting corals is only the first step in restoring the underwater ecology. We need time to plant more,” said Huang. “Hopefully, the corals will gradually become a forest and the fish will come back.”
    24.What has happened to corals?
A.They have come under threat. B.They have returned to normal
C.They have lost their past color. D.They have almost been extinct
25.What challenge will Huang face in coral plantation?
A.The choice of coral seedlings B.Dangerous diving conditions.
C.The rise in Water temperatures. D.Homesickness in the sea water.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Huang?
A.Generous and caring. B.Curious and responsible.
C.Stressed and anxious. D.Devoted and optimistic.
27.What can be the best tit for the text?
A.A conservation advocate B.The disappearing corals
C.Restoring paradise D.Sowing seeds of love

Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on August 11 in California, Google announced.
Google, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the US Geological Survey to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the common mobile operating system. Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warming telling them to drop to the floor and seek cover. The screen also will provide estimates of the quake's magnitude and distance from the user. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.
Users won't need to download California's MyShake app in order to receive the alerts. That application, developed by the University of California, Berkeley and launched last year, has been downloaded by only about 1 million of California's 40 million residents. By contrast, many millions of people own Android phones.
“This announcement means that California's world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone—giving millions precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the big one hits,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. IPhone users won't receive the alerts through Apple's operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, Google announced that Android phones would begin detecting earthquakes from around the world through their motion-sensing accelerometers(加速器). “Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer (地震仪), joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network,” according to a Google blog post. More than 2 billion devices run the Android operating system. Hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake-prone areas. But many countries lack the resources to build detection and alert systems, Google said. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate information on Google Search. But Google said it could begin sending out earthquake alerts next year.
28.If an earthquake hits the US, who won't receive the earthquake warning?
A.Android users who haven't downloaded the MyShake app.
B.IPhone users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
C.IPhone users who haven't downloaded the MyShake app.
D.Android users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
29.What can we learn from the text?
A.Millions of people have downloaded the MyShake app.
B.The earthquake early warning system will be of great help.
C.Google has already sent out earthquake alerts since last year.
D.Over 2 billion devices run the Apple operating system.
30.What will globalize Google's earthquake detection network?
A.New technology developed by Google. B.The large number of Android phone users.
C.Motion-sensing accelerometers. D.The newly developed MyShake app.
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To share a new MyShake app.
    B.To promote Android phones.
C.To make Google known to the world.
D.To introduce a new function of Android phones.

When someone damages their backbone, the injury can leave them paralyzed (瘫痪). Now, scientists have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again, thanks to an implanted device.
The human backbone, or spine, doesn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside is the spinal cord, which carries important information between the head and the lower part of the body. This information moves around as bursts of electricity traveling between the brain and the other parts of the body. When the spinal cord is hurt, this pathway gets damaged and they can’t move their legs.
Now scientists in Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. To help them walk again, the men had surgery. A special device was placed directly on the lower part of their spinal cord, below their injury. This “implant” contained sixteen electrodes, which are small objects that electricity can pass through. The researchers made sure the electrodes were lined up with nerves that control the leg muscles. The scientists controlled the implants from a tablet computer.
The patient’s brains aren’t sending “walking” messages to their legs. Instead, the tablet tells the implant to send the walking messages. The researchers used computers to generate patterns of movement, like taking a step. The patient then uses the tablet to choose the pattern and the muscles move in the chosen way. Over time, the men were able to walk using a special walker with buttons to control each leg.
The solution isn’t perfect. It’s very expensive, it requires difficult surgery, and the patients can’t walk without the system. But the scientists are hopeful that in the future, this sort of technology will allow many paralyzed people to begin to walk again in just hours.
32.What's the main function of the spinal cord?
A.It serves as a message carrier. B.It helps people stand up straight.
C.It takes control of the muscles. D.It produces signals for movements.
33.What is the implanted device expected to do?
A.Activate the damaged nerves. B.Identify the position of the injury.
C.Test the degree of the damage. D.Bridge the nerve gap made by the injury.
34.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the surgery is performed. B.How the device works on patients.
C.How the patients walk without aid. D.How movement patterns are designed.
35.Which can be the best title of the text?
A.Damaged nerves recover after surgery. B.Tablets are used in a medical treatment.
C.Implant helps the paralyzed walk again. D.Scientists made a discovery on backbones.

What Will Life Be like in the Future?
As may be imagined, there will be an android in every family. Of course, such an android should have artificial intelligence and it can deal with all housework. As for the means of transportation, we will see a kind of environmentally friendly car running everywhere. This kind of car will be powered by solar energy and it can run on its own without any driver. What's more, in the future, the moon will become one of our best destinations.
The future life that I describe will come true sooner or later.
