Just 16 at the time, Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out the ropes had to be discarded regularly due to safety regulations. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills. This discovery inspired him to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste. He considered possible ideas and ways to upcycle the discarded ropes, deciding to turn them into leashes(拴狗带)for dogs.Once he had made his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, introducing his idea of recycling old ropes. Some were doubtful at first, but many gyms agreed to donate their used ropes. Tsao spent months testing and designing his products and filing documents to become a nonprofit organization which he called Rocks2Dogs.To make the leashes, Tsao and volunteers first wash and dry the ropes. They cut them into different lengths, ranging from 4 to 10 feet, and then burn the ends to prevent them from fraying(磨损).They add a clip and handle to each end, and cover the leash's hardware with shrink tape.Because making the leashes now is a full-time job, Tsao has asked his friends, family, and neighbors for help. “We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope being saved from landfills,” says Tsao. The leashes come in various colors. There are also half-price leashes made from ropes with slight imperfections. These start at $ 7.49 while most other leashes start at $ 14.99. To date, the nonprofit has raised more than $35,000. Much of this money has been donated to animal shelters.24.What did Tsao discover?A. Rock climbing might do harm to health.B. The gym didn't obey safety regulations.C. Many old climbing ropes went to waste.D. Landfills caused damage to the environment.25.What was Tsao's plan?A.To call on climbing gyms to donate ropes.B.To transform retired ropes into dog leashes.C. The space show was shared via a video released at an annual TV gala for the festival celebration. In the video, Wang was seen floating in the space module while playing a guzheng, or Chinese zither. She played a segment of the popular Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”.The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. People usually hang colorful lanterns, play riddle games and express their wishes and hopes for the future. The crew members, who traveled to the space station core module on the Shenzhou-13 mission, kept some festive traditions alive as they continued to rotate around the Earth. Commander Zhai Zhigang wrote riddles on red paper scrolls with a brush pen. He displayed the calligraphy together with taikonaut Ye Guangfu and extended festival greetings to the audience. They also sent blessings to athletes at the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics: “We hope that you all achieve success, gain friendship and harvest your best Olympic experience.”The video of the space performance was received with much enthusiasm after it was shared on social media platforms. The lower bodies of the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal(脊柱的) cord injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal cord was able to send electrical signals to the muscles to permit them to stand, walk and exercise.Scientists have discovered that neurons-which receive and send signals for muscle movements-often still work in injured patients with serious spinal cord injuries. However, past research into spinal cord injuries has centered on the stimulation of neurons. Now in the latest experiment led by Grégoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed to copy an action of the brain, in which it sends signals to the spinal cord that result in muscle movement. When the spinal cord receives the brain signals, it stimulates a collection of nerve cells that can activate different muscles. The researchers reported that all three patients who got the spinal cord implants were able to take their first steps within an hour after receiving them. Over the next six months, the patients regained the ability to take part in more advanced walking activities, the study found. They were also able to ride bicycles and swim in community settings.Unlike other attempts to help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves through the back of the spine, Courtine said that his team redesigned the devices so signals would enter the spine from the sides. This method permits more direct targeting and activation of spinal cord areas, he said. The team then developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked to the device. The AI controls electrodes on the device to send signals to stimulate individual nerves that control muscles needed for walking and other activities. However, because the patients' muscles were weak from not being used, they needed help with supporting their weight, the researchers said. It also took some time for them to learn to work with the technology. Still, Bloch said, “The more they train, the, more they start lifting their muscles, the more fluid it becomes.”32.What can be inferred from paragraph 2?A.Courtine and Bloch have found that neurons in paralyzed patients still work.B. The new electrical device can imitate the brain to send signals to the spinal cord.C.Three paralyzed men recovered with the help of a new electrical device.D.Stimulating the neurons is the focus of the latest research into spinal cord injuries.33. How does the new device stimulate the spinal cord areas more directly?A.By stimulating nerves through the back of the spine.B.By using the AI system.C. By making signals enter the spine from the sides.D.By sending the signals to the brain.34.Which can best describe Bloch's idea in the last paragraph?A.Every garden has its weeds. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.” Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned(招手示意)the boys into his arms. “Things will change when I get back to work.”My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income. At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents' announcement, we talked.Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.”“Me, too .Daddy's foot's...this big" whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.“Yeah...We're in hard times,” I said. “It makes Mommy and Daddy sad.”“But we don't have to be sad,” I added, hoping to brighten the mood.“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up,” I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank.. earn some more...and surprise them with gifts!”“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money,”I offered.“Yeah,” Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!” He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow. “Yeah!” Stevie clutched his hands together. We had a plan!Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day.”注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission!
