Boredom is such a large part of day-to-day existence. Perhaps because it’s common in our lives, scientists have been slow to explore it. John Eastwood is one of the first scholars to take an interest.
One of the most common false views is that “only boring people get bored”. Yet as Eastwood set about exploring the reasons for boredom, he found that there are two distinct types of personality that tend to suffer from the feeling of boredom, and neither are particularly dull themselves.
Boredom often goes among people who are constantly looking for new experiences. For these people, the steady path of life just isn’t enough to hold their attention. The second kind of bored people have almost exactly the opposite problem: the world is a fearful place, and so they try not to step outside their comfort zone. While this might offer some comfort, they are not always satisfied with the safety it offers and boredom results.
Emotions should evolve for our benefit. “The very fact that boredom is a daily experience suggests it should be doing something useful,” says Heather Lench at Texas A$M University. Feelings like fear help us avoid danger, after all, while sadness might help prevent future mistakes. So, if true, what does boredom achieve?
Reviewing the evidence so far, Lench suspects that it lies behind one of our most important characters---curiosity. Boredom, she says, pushes us to try to seek new goals or explore new ideas which stimulate innovation (激发创新).
Eastwood is less enthusiastic about boredom’s benefits, but admits we should be cautious about looking for an immediate escape. “The feeling is so disgusting that people rush to remove it,” he says.“I’m not going to join that war on boredom and come up with a cure, because we need to listen to the emotion and ask what it is trying to tell us to do.”
4. What does John Eastwood’s study mainly focus on?
A. Why people get bored B. The benefits of boredom
C. How to deal with boredom D. The types of boredom
5. According to Lench, boredom________.
A. would help us avoid mistakes
B. cannot be cured for the moment
C. might be good for our creativity
D. could make us get tired and lose focus
6. What’s Eastwood’s attitude towards finding a cure for boredom?
A. Curious B. Optimistic
C. Objective D. Uninterested
7. What message can be concluded from the text?
A. Easier said than done B. Hard work never killed a man
C. Practice makes perfect D. Every coin has two sides

Electronic sensors built into paper could be used in a range of ways from information storage to touch screens and more.
Electronic sensors built into cartons(纸盒)may make it easier to tell when it’s time to throw out rotten milk or orange juice. And that’s just the start. At least that’s the goal for researchers working on putting electronics into paper. They’re trying to figure out how to combine the flexibility, low-cost and recyclability of paper with the information-carrying ability of electronics.
Daniel Torbjork, a physics graduate student in Finland, has been working on the problem. He’s published a review of the field in the journal Advanced Materials.
Much research has been focused in this area. While most electronic applications require patterned conducting structures, conductive paper could be used in applications such as energy storage devices, sensors, electric heaters and others, according to Torbjork.
“You could even have some interactive functions in magazines,” Torbjork said, “You could put a simple game in a package. If you want a touch screen, press a button and then something happen. Sensors in paper could tell us when something has gone bad.”
Additional applications, such as information storage and security paper, have been suggested for magnetic papers containing magnetite. In Massachusetts, researchers have figured out how to post a video of such a device put into a paper airplane.
German researchers have also put electronic chips in paper bank notes to defend counter-feiters(造伪币者). Paper is a good material but printing electronics also requires low-cost manufacturing. As many US and European paper makers lose market share to cheaper paper from China, these big paper companies are looking for added value products. That’s where electronic paper devices could make a difference.
“The major obstacles are paper’s large surface roughness and chemical impurities.” Torbjork says. But others in the field think that electronic sensors in paper are still far from the consumer marketplace.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen.” said Roy Horgan. “You need a conductive surface. It could be 10 years out. What we are looking for are solutions that you can commercialize today.”
Solar Print is partnering with Italian automaker Fiat to develop a unique auto-glass with tiny photostatic cells(光电)that can capture electricity from the sun. In the meantime, using paper to conduct electricity is still a “blue-sky” project.
“I would love to see someone prove me wrong, because that means that it’s actually happening.” Horgan said. “If someone comes up with conductive paper, then that’s a very interesting technology.”
8. Putting electronics into paper will ________.
A. cut the cost and impurity of paper
B. depend on flexible conductive structure
C. help consume rotten milk or orange juice
D. combine the advantages of paper and electronics
9. Paragraphs 4 to 7 mainly talk about the ________ of the conductive paper.
A. practical use B. theories
C. structures D. design process
10. Some paper makers welcome the new technology probably because it will ________.
Aput an end to fake money B. make the paper smoother
C. add more value to paper D. improve the printing technology
11. From the passage, we know that Roy Horgan ________.
A. has a burning desire to make a great profit
B. showed much interest in Solar Print industry
C. is not confident about the conductive paper
D. started a “blue-sky” project to study paper

BEIJING — A bullying incident at a primary school in Beijing should not be bushed off as “a joke that went too far”; rather, faces should be dug out and action should be taken to prevent similar events from happening on campus again, according to experts.
Huang Zifang, a psychologist specializing in children's growth issues, said schools should be careful about taking bullying incidents as mere pranks.
“Instead, they should work to find out the root cause of the incident in a timely manner, guide the children involved to face and handle the incident in a correct way and teach them to behave properly to avoid-similar situations,” Huang said.
She made the comments after a mother in Beijing posted a description online on Thursday of how her 10-year-old son was bullied at Zhongguancun No 2 Primary School, a top school in Haidian district.
The mother wrote that her fourth-grade son was the target of bullies who threw a toilet wastepaper basket at him, striking him in the head. The boy was also mocked by his classmates, she said, bringing on acute stress disorder — a mental illness triggered by severe anxiety.
The mother also wrote that the school described the incident as “a joke that went too far” and that the parents of the boy who threw the basket believed their son was “just being naughty”.
The article went viral, with many internet users recalling being bullied at school.
Shen Xua, a volunteer from Beijing who has traveled the country for several years to work with schools to reduce bullying, said schools should take responsibility for such incidents and try to make the bullies understand that their behavior is “vicious and harmful” and “not allowed”.
“In the long run, a reporting system should be established to root out bullying on campus. Students should be given specific channels to report what they experience to teachers before further measures are taken to deal with incidents,” Shen said.
Huang, the psychologist, said that schools and parents must pay more attention to the ethical development and mental health of children, rather than just looking at their academic performance.
On Saturday, Zhongguancun No 2 Primary School released a statement on its social media account saying that it had talked to the parents on both sides and would make further efforts to achieve an outcome satisfactory to all parties.
12. What does Shen Xua stress according to the passage?
A. A reporting system should be set up to root out bullying on campus
B. Schools should pay more attention to children’s academic performance
C. parents should make the bullies understand their behavior is harmful
D. Police should be often involved in dealing with bulling incidents at schools
13. How did the school in Beijing respond to the bullying incident according to Para. 6?
A. They didn’t take it seriously. B. They blamed the bullies quickly.
C. They reported it to the police station at once. D. They called the parents on both sides immediately.
14. What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “mocked” in Para. 5?
A. Taught the skills for an activity. B. Laughed at in an unfriendly way.
C. Made healthy again after an illness. D. Inspired to do something new or unusual.
15. What can be the best title for the news report?
A. Try to care about children’s ethical development
B. How a 10-year-old child was bullied on campus
C. Mental health of children should be paid attention to
D. School bullying must not be treated as a joke

In general, people who panic over their math skills tend to do worse in math classes than people who don't mind numbers. ___19___ “Just because you're math anxious, that doesn't always mean you're bad at math,” notes Rose Vukovic, an educational psychologist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Math anxiety affects people of all ages. It can lead to poor performance in math classes. ___20___ Throughout life, this type of stress can stand in the way of mastering skills or projects in a host of areas that rely on calculations. But the good news is that the problem is manageable. Researchers are finding ways people can cope with this stress.
A. But that's not always true.
B. It has an unimaginable impact.
C. And its impacts don't end at graduation.
D. Oh, you know it—well you' re pretty sure, right?
