Lsing is a part f life, but it was an indescribable depressin t drive 200 miles rund trip, get up early n a freezing Saturday mrning, and yet still finish furth ut f fur cntestants. After Lincln lst the 1858 Illinis Senate race, he reprtedly said, “I felt like the 12-year-ld by wh stubbed his te. I was t big t cry and it hurt t bad t laugh.” Oh yeah, I culd relate.

I thught “failing successfully” was a very apprpriate tpic, given the many letdwns Lincln experienced, and s this became the title f my speech.
Never mind the lst prize mney and praise —I did gain a new perspective. Thrugh
learning abut Lincln, I discvered that I culd fail successfully. Nw, whenever I’m faced with a failure, I remember what Lincln said after his unsuccessful 1854 Senate race, “The path was wrn and slippery. When did yu last write a letter? Prperly write ne — by hand? In a digital wrld, where
sending a text r email is far mre cnvenient than using snail mail, is the writing n the wall fr traditinal pen and paper? Well, sme peple claim that writing still has many benefits, s maybe it’s nt time t ditch yur ballpint r funtain penyet.
These days, when peple request things in writing, a typed, electrnic dcument will be accepted. Ding this n a cmputer means it culd be saved, edited, cpied and sent via email. But crafting a handwritten dcument is unique: it requires planning and thught, and, as well as practising yur handwriting, it helps yu t remember spelling and punctuatin.
Sme experts believe yur brain benefits frm using ld-fashined pen and paper. This is particularly relevant fr students, where typing ntes int a laptp is thught t lack the “tactile feedback ( 触觉反馈)” tthebrainthatcntactbetweenpenandpaperdes.BBCWrklife website qutes Hetty Ressingh frm the University f Calgary, wh says that taking ntes by hand invlves cgnitive engagement in summarising, paraphrasing, rganising, cncept and vcabulary mapping. Others agree that handwriting may bst fine mtr skills in yur hands andfingers.
Thereareeverydaybenefitsfusingpenandpapert. Scribbling ( 匆忙书写) ntes, shpping lists r messages n the back f an envelpe can still be useful, quick and prtable. But putting pen t paper in a letter t a friend r lved ne can prbably have the mst impact. Pen pal writer Katherine Mller tld the BBC, “In a wrld where it is s easy t hp nline t email r t send a fast text, it is s persnal and s precius t knw smene chse t turn ff the virtual wrld t spend sme time withyu.”
S, while digital skills remain imprtant, dn’t write ff yur pens and pencils yet —
especially if yur smartphne, tablet r laptp runs ut f pwer.
The underlined wrd “ditch” in the first paragraph can be replacedby“”.

As new year appraches, crwds arund the wrld may be expecting firewrks t light up thesky. Butthefirewrksculdfinallylsetheirappealwiththegrwingusefdrnes (无人机) fr light shws. One bvius example was drne light shw in the pening ceremny f Tky Olympics.
Ollie Hwitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drnes t create a display fr Lndn’s new year celebratin, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drnes were increasingly able t fly in greater density and fr lnger. Hwitt als said there were benefits f drnes, “They give ut n pllutants, they’re reusable, and there’s n fallut r that kind f thing. S in that sense they are a very sensible chice.”
Rbert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbr, als said the decisin t use a drne display at the harbr was dwn t a number f factrs, including the impact f firewrks n animals — frm wildlife t the pets f bat wners. “They’ve ften cmmented n hw much suffering is caused t their pets by the firewrks,” he said.
But nt everyne agrees. Hans Rsling, a spkespersn frm the British Firewrks Assciatin said drnes culd als pse envirnmental prblems. “Suggestins are that drnes have less f an impact n the envirnment, but we have cncerns abut electrical demand and useflithium (锂) batterieswhichareknwnnttbeallthat ‘green’,” hesaid. “Theimpactf firewrk use n the envirnment has been shwn t be minr and very shrt-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely t be mre pllutin frm a cuple f cars driving t an event than caused by firewrks at anevent.”
And there are issues with drne light displays, which need t receive specific safety apprval frm certain authrities. Sme suggest the use f drnes desn’t mean shutting ff firewrks. The bangs f firewrks create a sund feeling that is hard t replace. Meanwhile, thers prefer the chance t tell stries in the sky by using a series fimage.
Why des the writer talk abut the Tky Olympics in Para 1?
T attract readers’ attentin t theOlympics.
T advcate setting ff firewrks in the newyear.
T intrduce the ppular use f drnes fr lightshws.
    T highlight peple’s celebratin f this peningceremny.

    They bring envirnmental prblems.
They cause little suffering t thepets.
They add clr t the new yearcelebratin.
    They are ecnmical andenvirnmentally-friendly.
Which f the fllwing did Hans Rsling agreewith?
Firewrk displays last shrter than drnedisplays.
The pllutin frm firewrks isn’t as much as peplethink.
Drnes have less impact n the envirnment thanfirewrks.
Peple shuld abandn the drne displays because f lithiumbatteries.
What are peple’s attitudes twards drne lightdisplays?
    A.Cntrversial.B. Favrable.C.Cautius.D.Neutral.

By the time f the fair, I was actually prud f her fr putting herself ut there fr the sake f us kids. Our perfrmance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drve hme, I said t my mm, “I’m really glad yu vlunteered t help my class with the perfrmance.” My mm reached back and squeezed my hand. “Thanks fr saying that. I can see why yu might’ve been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”

    Text 10
Many things in ur every day lives wuld have seemed like magic t previus generatins. Think f that small device we all lve. It lets tw peple n ppsite sides f the glbe talk t each ther. Or, that bx with little peple living inside f it — at least ur distant ancestrs wuld guess s, if they ever saw a televisin. But the technlgies shwn as impssible in mvies and bks frm just 40 years ag are nw real. That was when the Hllywd space trend f the 1980s happened. I persnally remember watching thse films when they came ut. Clearly, they missed the mark fr what the far future will lk like. It’s bvius that scientific prgress is mving faster tday than peple have ever seen. (18) Every generatin in histry has thught abut his wn time. A persn brn in 1000 A.D. culd prbably understand the wrld if he wke up five hundred years later. Things wuld be different, but they wuld still make sense. But, can yu imagine a persn frm 1500 A.D. waking up tday? (19) The ther side f this questin is this: Hw much change is t much fr us t handle? This is an issue sciety has never seriusly thught abut, since we have never seen such rapid transfrmatin in the wrld. While I am at the age f sixty, I still cannt guess what the wrld will lk like if I reach my 90s. (20)
