    阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从16-35各题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

If you took the strengths of others, and compared them to your weaknesses, do you think this would make you feel good? The funny thing is, this is 16 most of us do at one time or another-and some of us do it pretty 17.

It’s surely a 18 for a drop in self-confidence and for unhappiness. Let’s say I take a look at someone who creates amazing artwork on their website and I look at my art, and realize I don’t come close to being 19 with him. In fact, I look pretty    20. But it’s not a fair    21. If I looked at my strengths-writing useful and honest posts-I can see that I have a lot to    22, a lot to be happy about.

That’s so important-being able to look at your own strengths, and see your true   23. It’s actually one of the keys to success and happiness.

I want to talk about this issue    24 an email from a reader recently:I have some teammates from very rich families, I can’t stop myself comparing my    25with theirs. I must say that my financial planning is sound enough to take care of my    26 family; and I can take care of new family members also, at least for some time    27 I lose my current job. But    28 I see or hear them spending so much money after possessions, I start comparing again. How can I stop this habit, without changing jobs?

This is an excellent but tough    29. I think it’s    30 to compare ourselves to others, but it often makes us unhappy even if we have enough and should be   31 what we have. My quick    32: try to be aware of when you start comparing yourself to others. . . once you’ve developed this    33, stop yourself and tell yourself, “Stop that!”And then   34 thinking about all the things you do have, the things you love, the people you have and the blessings that   35 has given you. Make this a regular practice, and you’ ll start to be happier with your life.

    16. A. why   B. what   C. that   D. how

    17. A. often   B. hard   C. soon   D. well

    18. A. theory   B. option   C. practice  D. idea

    19. A. blessed   B. connected  C. weighed  D. matched

    20. A. grateful   B. pitiful   C. shocked  D. confident

    21. A. comparison  B. communication C. competition  D. combination

    22. A. regret   B. correct   C. offer   D. afford

    23. A. thoughts  B. values   C. alternatives  D. weaknesses

    24. A. because of  B. according to C. apart from  D. in spite of

    25. A. concept   B. health   C. profession  D. lifestyle

    26. A. developing  B. working  C. existing  D. coming

    27. A. as if   B. even if   C. in case   D. now that

    28. A. however  B. whatever  C. wherever  D. whenever

    29. A. programme  B. fantasy  C. question  D. reality

    30. A. strange   B. natural   C. difficult  D. important

    31. A. sorry for  B. curious about C. guilty at  D. happy with

    32. A. judgement  B. conclusion  C. formula  D. advice

    33. A. awareness  B. hobby   C. tradition  D. custom

    34. A. require   B. risk   C. fancy   D. start

    35. A. happiness  B. life   C. success  D. confidence

Trying to find the perfect present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. Few people will actually tell you what they want for a special occasion. So what to do? Here are some tips that could help.

    Start Early

Be honest-do you wait until the last minute to start looking for presents? While you are definitely not alone in this ritual, it is something you might want to try to change. Starting your shopping early can have a number of advantages, particularly when stocking up for holidays such as Christmas. If you plan in advance rather than last minute you can go shopping online which increases your gift buying possibilities as you’ll have time to factor in the delivery of the gift.

Make a List, Check It Twice

Now is the time to put your thinking cap on as you make a list. If you are lucky, you should be able to find a few good ideas in one of these lists. However, what if this list isn’t as helpful as you might have hoped? In this instance, write down different personality traits of the person you are shopping for. Then try to determine how to use this information to find a gift that is perfectly suited to them.

    Think Outside the Box

If you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. Often, the reason you get stuck for gift ideas is because you are restricting yourself too much. An example of beingcreative is to think about what your friend’s office looks like. This can give you lots ofideas to give him a gift for his workspace. In the end, it’s about finding something he can use every day, something he can really appreciate.

    Gift an Experience

If a regular old present isn’t doing the trick, it may be time to think a little bigger. Instead of a physical gift, you can give someone an experience that they will never forget. You may be wondering what an“experience”means exactly. Well, it can be anything that will interest the recipient. If they are an adventurer, a local or foreign trip will be excellent. On the other hand, if they are a sports enthusiast, you can buy them tickets to a significant game.

    36. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Many people make a plan in advance.

    B. You have many friends who do the same.

    C. People tend to send gifts earlier than planned.

    D. Other people also buy presents at the last moment.

    37. What can be done if you find your list of little help in choosing a gift?

    A. Listing the character features of your friends.

    B. Thinking it over before making a decision.

    C. Asking your friends what they like best.

    D. Doing shopping with your friends.

    38. What do we know about Think Outside the Box?

    A. Presents should be unique and special.

    B. Practical presents can be a good option.

    C. Offices are usually designed for creation.

    D. Appreciation could be shown through gifts.

    39. According to the last paragraph, which can be the best gift idea for a photographer?

    A. Dining in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

    B. Visiting a science museum in your town.

    C. Buying a smart phone with an advanced camera.

    D. Taking a trip to Mount Tai in the coming summer.

    40. What is the purpose of the passage?

    A. To show the significance of pleasing friends.

    B. To offer some tips on buying friends presents.

    C. To suggest several ways on how to make friends.

    D. To stress the importance of buying gifts for friends.

Most of Florida is a flat peninsula (半岛) with water on three sides and houses built asclose to the shoreline as possible. For one thing we are more frequently the target ofhurricanes than any other state; for another, our geography makes us more easily to be hurtby rising seas.

A news story about climate change in Florida popped up. Historically, scientistsbelieved mangroves (红树林) didn’t live farther north than Cedar Key, in the middle ofFlorida’s Big Bend. But that’s not the case anymore. Samantha Chapman, a biologyprofessor who’s been studying how Florida’s mangroves have been migrating (迁移), found them up near the St Mary’s River, which forms the border between Florida andGeorgia. It seems that they soon be marching through Georgia and becoming a thrivingnew component of coastal habitats.

But a coastal biologist named Blair Witherington took issue on thematter. Themangroves weren’t spreading into a new territory, he pointed out. They were entering areasthat had been classified as saltmarsh (盐沼), where the landscape was dominated bycordgrass. Saltmarsh and mangrove create very different habitats that attract a verydifferent set of animals. “When one communityreplaces the other, this diversity is lost, ”Witherington remarked. Changing the animals’ habitat has the potential to influence thewhole food chain, making a widespread difference.

What was driving this? “Mangroves can survive a short freeze, but not a prolonged, hard freeze. By combing through the weather records kept by the state’s orange juice industry, biologists have been able to document that Florida is having fewer prolonged hard freezes than it used to. Then the mangroves have adapted by expanding their range. ”Samantha explained.

“They’ve adapted in another way, too. Not only are the mangroves spreading into areas that once were unfriendly to them, but they have also changed their life cycle to speed things up. Normally it takes them about 15 years of growth before they start making seeds. Now, as they get into these marshes, they’re producing seeds when they’ re only a couple of years old, ”Samantha said.

The problem with having too many mangroves by the sea is that climate change may overwhelm them. A study by the US Geological Survey said sea level rise could wipe out mangroves all along the Florida coast. So, here’s the question we humans have to consider: Nature is finding ways to adapt to how we’ve changed the climate. What are we doing to adapt to it? Or at least slow it down?

    46. What can we learn about the state of Florida?

    A. It could be affected by high tides easily.

    B. Its geography fuels shipbuilding industry.

    C. Its houses are built in a high-lying but flat area.

    D. It is often hit by tornadoes and suffers huge losses.

    47. What is the news story about Florida’s mangroves?

    A. They migrate to warmer regions.

    B. They are marching into a new habitat.

    C. They form the border between Florida and Georgia.

    D. They are introduced into Florida to prevent flooding.

    48. Which of the following would Blair Witherington agree with?

    A. Saltmarsh is fragile and requires urgent protection.

    B. Florida includes a rich diversity of natural habitats.

    C. The benefits of the mangroves outweigh their troubles.

    D. Everything in the ecosystem is connected complicatedly.

    49. What are the 4th and 5th paragraphs mainly about?

    A. What mangroves had to face in their habitats.

    B. Whether mangroves had influence on other plants.

    C. How mangroves adapted to the changing environment.

    D. Why mangroves had a different life cycle in marshes.

    50. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Human beings are supposed to worship nature.

    B. It is urgent to grow more mangroves along coastlines.

    C. Measures against mangroves’ migration are far from enough.

    D. What we should do to stop the climate change is still up in the air.

Many years ago, I bumped into an old friend of mine. He had devoted his life to actingbut had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.

I thought of his dogged (顽强的) perseverance. Was it smart or foolish? What could hehave achieved? Had he quit his dream of acting and moved on? Our culture does not lookkindly upon quitting. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it eventually results insuccess.

We chant (反复喊着)“Winners never quit” and“If at first you don’t succeed, tryagain. ” We lap up (欣然接受) stories of persistence, of the author who submitted stories foryears before her novels were published or of the athlete who trained since childhood to wingold at the Olympics.

Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward everyperson. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never getpublished. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable (无数的) others who trainedevery day of their lives and never made the cut.

We all agree that doing the same things and expecting a different result is unwise. Sowhy do we believe that persevering through failure after failure is a good idea? We considerquitting in the face of failure to be weak. We believe that perseverance is the key to success. Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion anddrive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.

Our society believes that anything is possible, as long as you “believe”. But not everyone can make it. Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing todo. Obviously, if you enjoy a pursuit, regardless of its outcome, you should continue. If you knew your novel would never be published, would you want to write? If you could neverbe a champion swimmer, would you still train? Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.

Failure is not always the path to success. Sometimes, failure is the door to something new.

    51. What do we know about the author’s old friend?

    A. He was dissatisfied with his acting performance.

    B. He switched his dream of acting to something else.

    C. He failed in acting because of a lack of persistence.

    D. He failed in all attempts to become a successful actor.

    52. The author mentioned JK Rowling mainly to ______.

    A. explain how she achieved success in writing

    B. show that success doesn’t happen to everyone

    C. prove that success favors those who are perseverant

    D. encourage readers to hold onto their dream until they succeed

    53. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 4?

    A. Made out of their dreams.

    B. Met the required standard.

    C. Improved their performances.

    D. Promised to be good players.

    54. What does the author advise us to do if we’ve failed many times?

    A. Make an effort to try new things.

    B. Stick to your goal until we succeed.

    C. Wait for the right time and good luck.

    D. Ask friends or family members for help.

    55. What is the author’s attitude toward perseverance?

    A. It makes anything possible.

    B. It is not necessary for success.

    C. It is not the only part of success.

    D. It works well regards of outcome.

For years, I played around with writing. I wrote when I felt like it. Then one day, a friend asked what my dream was. When I said it was to be a writer, he said these words that changed my life, “You don’t have to want to be a writer. You are a writer; you just need to write.”So I started calling myself a writer. Everywhere I went, I introduced myself as “Jeff Goins, Writer,”and even put it in email signatures and on my Facebook page. And you know what? I started acting like it. Eventually, I even began to believe it. It turns out that sometimes you do have to fake it before you make it.

The lesson here is simple: If you wait for someone to give you permission to start pursuing your dream, you’ll be waiting for a long time. You have to begin before you think you’re ready.

After I decided to pursue my dream, I still had to find the time to do it. Working a full-timejob and having a wife and other things to do, I didn’t have unlimited free time. I had to find time to write. For me, that meant getting up early. Like, 5:00 a. m. early. Every morning, I would wake up, get my coffee, and write for two hours. At first, this was difficult;I had to force myself out of bed and downstairs before the sun rose. But eventually, it became habitual. I did it without even thinking about it. And soon, what started as a discipline became a daily joy.

By doing this, I learned the excuse I had given myself---“I don’t have enough time”---wasn’t true. I did have enough time; it was just hiding in“inconvenient”places.

These days, most people I meet are talking about their dreams. For example, they want to bravely pursue a successful career. However, they’re doing it all wrong. They think they need to take a huge leap out into the unknown when, in fact, the opposite is true. So if you have a dream, just take action. And don’t say you don’t have time for it.

    56. How did the friend’s words change his attitude towards writing? (no more than 10 words)

    57. What does the underlined word“fake”mean in the first paragraph? (no more than 1 word)

    58. How did the author find time for writing? (no more than 15 words)

    59. What does the author advise us to do to pursue a successful career? (no more than 10words)

    60. Suppose you’re crazy about playing basketball, but you have no time for it. How will you deal with it?
