Ⅵ. Reading comprehension (阅读理解) (本大题共 25 题,共 50 分) In rainy London, always carry your “brolly”
Big Ben, the Queen, a plate of ham and eggs - no, no, no. If you’re looking for a symbol of
Britain, only one thing passes the test - the umbrella.
Now, I know what you’re thinking- we have rain in China and we have umbrellas too. Certainly, I will never forget the way it rained when I lived in Beijing: the streets became instant rivers and there were flashes of lightning for hours on end in the sky. People dove for cover under bin bags, the shops were emptied of
their plastic ponchos ( 斗 篷 ) within seconds, and I found myself soaked from head to foot, my
poorly-chosen skirt and T-shirt now totally see-through.
This would never have happened in Britain.
For one thing, during my year in Beijing, it only really rained about 10 times.
But although we seldom get a Beijing-style washout in London, the drizzle ( 毛 毛 雨 ) that does fall is all but constant. Even when the sky is perfectly blue, you can be sure it’s going to cloud over and start drizzling again within the hour.
And when it does, there is chaos. Trains stop, drains are blocked, and buses break down.
So - as with so many things in the UK - it’s up to ordinary people to sort themselves out. No self-respecting Briton will ever leave home without his “brolly” - as the umbrella is affectionately
(亲切地) known.
A brolly has hundreds of uses, even on rare rain-free days. A real gentleman of London will use his umbrella as a walking stick. A traditional game of cricket can be played using an umbrella as a bat. Nor do you ever have to be afraid of robbers - your umbrella doubles as a defensive weapon.

In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. These things have come to represent, in fact, what I call 65 and love.
I don't remember my father ever getting into a swimming pool. But he did love the water. Any kind of 66 ride seemed to give him pleasure. And he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along. But I never really liked being on the water, the way my father did. I liked being in the water, moving through it, and having it all around me. I was not a strong swimmer, or one who learned to
swim early, for I had my 67 . But I loved being in the swimming pool close to my father's
office and spending those summer days with my father, who would come by on a break.
I needed him to see what I could do. My father would stand there in his suit, the 68 person not in swimsuit.
After swimming, I would go inside his office and sit on the wooden chair in front of his
big desk, where he let me play with anything I found in his top desk drawer. Sometimes, if I was left alone at his desk 69 he was working in the lab, an assistant or a student might come in and tell me perhaps I shouldn't be playing with his office things. But my father always showed up and said easily, “Oh, no, it's fine.” Sometimes he handed me coins and told me to get myself an
ice cream. A poet once said, “We look at life once, in childhood; the rest is memory.” And I think
it is not only what we “look at once, in childhood” that 70 our memories, but who, in that childhood, looks at us.

You either have it, or you don’t -- a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose t 71 in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly u 72 how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University s 73 this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out a 74 or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to i 75 their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
◆ If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.
◆ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the
s 76 route.
◆ Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or swalls in the countryside to guide you. Count your s 77 so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(共 12 分)
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly an airplane, but back then it was almost unheard for a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2007, when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot-air balloon for my birthday. But the experience was very dull. Around that time, I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Bush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community in late 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t
believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.
On June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My inspector, Jay, guided me through the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. We were in a free fall for a minute before Jay opened the parachute, then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt – much better than the hot-air balloon ride. I was enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and know that . If there is something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.
