Madagascar was not turning out to be the heaven I expected. I was on assignment here to report on drought relief and the prevention of starvation. A reporter and I were here to find out who was helping.
After a three-plus-hour ride in a van,we arrived in Ambovombe, a small town. Peter immediately headed over to the hospital to speak with a local doctor on our topics of interest. Since I didn’t need to photograph the background interview with the doctor, I decided to wander cut to the road and tried to look ordinary.
l raised my camera tentatively to get some images before the sun went down. These would be my first photos in the country. Would they duck and cover? Hiss and yell? Would they be pleased? Upset?
I photographed a handsome man who leaned against a wall in the golden light of dusk. No reaction. Ok. I took a breath. After a while, everyone within a 20-yard away had noticed me.
Soon a mother standing at the street, encouraged me to photograph her two young children. I hesitated a moment. They were dressed in dirty clothes. One of them might not even have any pants on-not because their parents were too careless, but because they could not afford them. Shoes were far beyond the means of money.
Their mother really wanted me to photograph them. This happens everywhere I go. I’ve taken this kind of photo of cute smiling children staring into my lens over and over. I don’t usually save the image for my photo files.
But I saved this one.
Why? The children’s mother. It’s something so powerful yet so common that we sometimes miss it. This mom despite all the disadvantages so obvious to an outsider’s eyes, found in her children something she wanted a photograph to remember. That was because she saw a different picture: She saw it with a mother’s heart As should we all.

B. It was a reminder of visiting Madagascar.
C. It reflected a mom’s love for her children.
D. It showed the miserable life in Madagascar.

Located in the middle of the Egyptian desert is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza. Aside from being an incredible architecture achievement, it also serves as the final resting place for the great Pharaoh Khufu. Yet, one question which has confused archeologists and architects alike is how this amazing structure was built.
Many people don’t believe that humans were technologically advanced enough in ancient Egypt to build such a large and highly advanced structure. This brought about many crazy theories that the pyramids were constructed by a race of giants or even aliens from outer space.Another popular theory suggested that the pyramids were built by an army of poor slaves who were forced to.
Modern technology and some recent findings have helped shed some light on this ancient mystery. A major breakthrough occurred when an explorer accidentally uncovered a tomb containing some written information about the builders. The records reveal that the workers were paid and well-fed, and came from poor families in Egypt. Further analysis made it clear that people considered it an honor to work on the pyramids, and the builders were treated with great respect. In fact, anyone who died while working on the pyramids was given the honor of being buried in the tomb near where the pharaohs lay.
The myth that they purposely worked to death isn’t true, either. To avoid exhaustion, the builders worked three-month shifts and then were given a break to recover. A recent estimate from researchers is that a workforce of roughly 15,000 people could have completed the construction in about 10 years. An analysis of the bones of the builders revealed that their work was extremely tough, as most of the skeletons displayed signs of severe injuries. But thanks to their incredible effort, the human race has an astonishing monument that should stand the test of time.

B. They were eating well although they were from poor families.
C. They were selected because it was an honor to work on the pyramids.
D. They were buried near the pharaohs’ tombs if they died during working.

If you happen to flip through TV channels, you’re likely to come across a commercial for a new vitamin or supplement (保健品) designed to improve your health. These pills often promise the world, claiming to cure baldness or fight overweight. But in the medical community, there’s some debate on whether these products provide any actual benefits.
Many people begin their day by popping a multi-vitamin. These pills are supposed to effortlessly provide our bodies with vitamins in case we have missed them in our meals. It seems to be a no-brainer that everyone should take one. However, a 2006 study by the Agency for Healthcare Research, concluded that multi-vitamins have zero effect on reducing a person’s chances of getting cancer or heart disease. The only people multi-vitamins benefited were those in poverty-stricken nations who lacked nutrition. In2009, a related study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center came to a similar conclusion.
Antioxidants are another supplement that is promoted to improve health and prevent aging. Antioxidants in vitamins A, C, and E are supposed to greatly reduce cellular damage. Yet, in a study involving over 180,000 adults, those who took these vitamins actually increased their risks of dying by 16 percent.
One likely cause for these negative results is that people who eat healthy diets and take vitamins are probably getting too many nutrients, which can be poisonous. Then why are these supplements being promoted? Many experts blame the health industry because supplements aren’t as highly inspected as they should be. What’s worse, vitamin makers aren’t required to list negative side effects like medicines do. In many cases, it can even be difficult for the U.S.’s Federal Drug Agency (FDA) to ban risky ingredients due to lengthy and expensive legal battles. On the other hand, after these studies were made public, people continued buying more vitamins than ever. It seems that no matter what evidence is presented, the majority of people aren’t ready to give upon a magic pill just yet.
32.What does the first paragraph suggest about vitamins?
A. They are advertised very heavily.
B. They are healthy and beneficial.
C. They have never helped anyone ever.
D. They are welcomed in the medical community.
33.What does the underlined word “no-brainer” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Foolish decision. B. Obvious truth.
C. Small possibility. D. First option.
34. What can vitamin pills actually help?
A. To reduce cellular damage.
B. To prevent people from aging.
C. To reduce risk of getting cancer.
D. To benefit people with poor nutrition.
35.According to the author, what has caused the problems with vitamins?
A. FDA doesn’t ban risky ingredients.
B. Vitamin makers do not list side effects.
C. The health industry fails to inspect enough.
D. People turn a blind eye to the research findings.

A recent research shows benefits to writing about a traumatic (创伤性的) experience or difficult situation in a manner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing.” People who do this, recording their deepest thoughts and feelings, often show improved mental and physical health, says James Parker, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas, Austin.
Expressive writing is a specific technique, and it’s different from writing in a journal. ___36___
Parker says that hundreds of studies over several decades have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing and found that it can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as cancer, PTSD and depression. ___37___ And it may even help reduce symptoms of depression and PTSD, and prevent colds and flu.
Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience. Recognizing that something is bothering you is an important first step. ___38___ And creating a narrative (叙述) gives you a sense of control.
What if you don’t consider yourself “a writer”? Don’t worry about spelling or grammar, and don’t share your writing with anyone. ___39___ The goal of the exercise is to find meaning in an unsettling event.
___40___ Expressive writing isn’t a magical panacea (灵丹妙药). It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other treatments. And people coping with a severe trauma or depression may not find it useful to do on their own, without therapy.
A. But do dig deep into your thoughts and feelings.
B. But there are a few warnings about “expressive writing.”
C. Writing can increase someone’s acceptance of their experience.
D. Research also found that it can improve mood, sleep, and memory.
E. A journal is a record of experiences or reflections kept regularly for private use.
F. Translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts.

How exciting! Today is my basketball Grand-final! My team of six enthusiastic boys led by our coach, Jack, has worked extremely hard just to make the finals. My heart was pounding a hundred kilometres an hour as I walked into our home ground. As I hurried to our team bench, our opponents caught my attention. They seemed a lot taller and “meaner” looking.
Whistle blew. Five of us started on the court. Our opponent got hold of the ball first. They were unbelievably fast. They kept breaking our defences and kept scoring goals. Excited parents were cheering so much that their faces were as red as beetroots. Even our best, Bryce, could not stop our opponents from scoring, which annoyed him a lot. By half time, both teams were extremely exhausted and our opponents were ten goals ahead, which presented us with an enormous but achievable challenge.
Jack was awfully anxious as we were not playing anywhere near our best. He told us that we could still win if we made our transitions much quicker so that penalty shots came our way.He also directed us to rebound (抢断篮板) and position ourselves better to receive and score goals. Most important, he reminded us to play as a team.
Our team was all fired up. The second half started in our favour. We were as quick as lightning on the court. We were dribbling (运球), passing, shooting and rebounding without any mistakes. We caught our opponents by surprise. The scores were almost level. We were trailing only by one point. The crowd was growing wild with excitement, fuelling our confidence. At the same time, our opponents switched back to attention and started playing like what they did in the first half, making it harder for us to score.
One minute left! Our opponent threw in the ball but I managed to steal it! Our team was bursting with happiness! More opponents were heading my way and I had to pass the ball to Bryce. Instead of passing on the ball, he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!

第二节(满分25分)
Possible version:
Then I noticed Jack signaled to the referee for a pause. So we headed towards Jack and gathered around him. Somehow one of teammates began complaining about Bryce. Feeling frustrated and aggrieved, Bryce argued that he just tried to get scores. Jack looked into our eyes, saying, “It is easy to blame someone for mistake, but remember that basketball game is a team effort. We win together or lose together!” So ashamed was Bryce that he promised to keep calm and cooperate.
Whistle blew again and we came back to the court. Though our opponents had possession of the ball, I stole it once again and passed it to Bryce. Finding he got double teamed, Bryce managed to pass the ball to one of us. He shot. Yes! We made it! The final buzzer rang! We screamed with excitement and hugged together. Since this memorable basketball match, we have been ready for every battle. There is no limit to what we can accomplish as long as we play a team.
