Our emtins can vary cnsiderably depending n many factrs, including ur health, wealth, relatinships and where we live. But smetimes we need t take a step back and think abut what happiness really means and hw we can find it.
Maybe we shuld take a leaf ut f Finland's bk — last year the UN's Wrld Happiness Reprt fund the cuntry t be the happiest place n earth. The reprt lked at "subjective well-being". That's hw happy peple feel they are and why — based n factrs such as ecnmic strength, scial supprt, life expectancy, freedm f chice and genersity.
Research has als suggested that while persnal feelings f pleasure are the accepted definitin f happiness in Western cultures, East Asian cultures tend t see happiness as scial harmny, and in sme parts f Africa and India it's mre abut shared experiences and family.
Authr Helen Russell has been lking at the psitive characteristics f a cuntry's ppulatin t see what makes them happy and fund Japan t be ne f the mst cntent. She said this was due t their cncept f wabi-sabi —"This traditinal Japanese cncept arund celebrating imperfectin... it's this idea that there is a beauty in ageing, it's t be celebrated rather than trying t disguise it." S, basically, we shuld be happy with wh we are and rejice in ur faults and individuality.
But if yu're feeling dwn in the dumps because yur hme cuntry desn't have a happiness cncept t fllw, cnsider sme self-help ideas which include being virtuus, finding smething t be passinate abut, enjying the here and nw and being altruistic — helping thers. Hwever, ur pursuit f happiness culd make us miserable as we try t meet sciety's expectatins and gals, making us anxius and stressed. Als, having t little experience f negative emtins can make us less adept (熟练的)at facing new challenges.
24.What is happiness in East Asian cultures?

I had always heard that Nrth Americans value independence, and that Eurpeans value, tgetherness. But I never fully understd it until 2 mnths ag, when I left my Ph.D. lab in Canada fr a 4-mnth research in a lab in France. On my first day, Pierre — a Ph.D. student whse desk is acrss frm mine — tapped me n the shulder and asked: "Cffee?" I ndded and fllwed him dwn the hallway t the cmmn rm, where ther grad students were filing in. I sat there, cautiusly sipping the bitter liquid five times strnger than my nrmal American and trying hard nt t reveal my uncultured tastes, while lab chatter (闲聊)filled the air.
Cffee breaks are a rutine part f wrk life here. The chatter smetimes turns t serius scientific tpics. But mstly, the meetups ffer a chance t unwind — t share stries abut life inside and utside the lab and t cnnect with peple wh understand what yu're ging thrugh.
The lighthearted atmsphere and sense f cmmunity is a welcme cntrast t my life in Canada, where I spent mst f my wrkdays all alne. I went int the lab each mrning with set gals fr my day. At lunch, I'd keep my eyes glued t my cmputer while I shveled(大量送入)frkfuls f salad int my muth, trying t pwer thrugh my t-d list.
Our lab held weekly meetings where we'd take turns presenting ur latest, wrk and getting feedback frm clleagues. But we didn't take daily cffee breaks. My labmates and I were t busy cllecting data and publishing papers.
Lking back nw, I realize hw much we were missing. Researchers need cmmunity because gd ideas dn't just cme frm reading literature and thinking deep thughts; it's helpful t bunce ideas ff thers, particularly in a nnthreatening envirnment. It's als helpful t have a spt t share the day-t-day ups and dwns f life as a grad student. Hw else are yu suppsed t knw that yu're nt the nly ne suffering frm challenges like anxiety?
28.What can we learn abut the authr frm the first paragraph?
    A. He has a Eurpean dependent persnality.

    C. He was ashamed f his uncultured backgrund.
    D. He is t vain t wrk with ther grad students.
29.The authr takes cffee breaks as a way t .
    A. break away frm his wrk life in Canada.
    B. get invlved in serius scientific tpics.
    C. relax and exchange ideas with peple.
    D. cllecting data frm his clleagues.
30.Which f the fllwing best describes the authrs wrk life in Canada?
    A. Demanding but satisfactry.
    TOC \ "1-5" \h \z B. Impersnal but efficient.

    D. Stressful and independent.
    31. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Why Scientists Shuld Take Cffee breaks?
    B. Cffee Inspires Creativity in Scientists
    C. Lighthearted Atmsphere Cunts
    D. Nrth American Life VS. Eurpean Life

Flying has shrunk the wrld! It's nw pssible t travel arund the glbe quickly and easily. Jumping n a plane and jetting ff n hliday r a business trip is the nrm fr many f us, and with the rise f budget airlines, the number f peple taking t the skies is increasing. But while air travel is csting us less, the cst t the envirnment is ging up.
Climate change is smething we're all aware f nw, and aviatin (航空)cmpanies knw that sme f the blame fr this is being pinted at them.
While we culd think twice abut taking a flight in the first place, particularly a shrt-haul trip that culd be made by train, technlgy might be the answer t reducing emissins and minimising the envirnmental damage.
Recent develpments have fcused n reducing the amunt f fuel airliners bum. Making flying green and sustainable was the ht tpic at the recent Dubai Air Shw. There was talk f advances in engine technlgy, making them mre efficient, and pssibly using bi-fuel t pwer aircraft.
Alejandr Ris Galvan, a bi-energy prfessr at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, tld the BBC that "these have the capacity t reduce the carbn ftprint anywhere between 50-80 percent when yu cmpare them t fssil fuels."
Phil Curnck, chief engineer f the civil future prgramme at Rlls-Ryce, als suggested that electric hybrid engines culd play a part fr smaller aircraft, cvering shrter distances, which ffers the pssibility f a carbn-neutral flight fr a limited range.
Of curse, aircraft manufacturers are cnstantly lking at ways t make their planes mre fuel efficient. Being's Dreamliner, fr example, is already in peratin and uses 25 percent less fuel per passenger cmpared with aircraft f a similar size. Other imprvements include better aircraft aerdynamics (空气动力),changes t ways aircraft taxi n runways, and the use f lighter materials.
If we can't kick the flying habit, it seems these arc the develpments we need t make in rder t ensure air travel is as green as pssible. But aviatin experts agree it’s ging t take time.
    32. What idea was presented in the recent Dubai Air Shw?
    A. Reducing budget airlines glbally.
    B. Replacing fssil fuels with bi-fuels.
    C. Emplying hybrid engines in aircraft.
    D. Reducing carbn ftprint via technlgy.
33.Why did the authr mentin Being's Dreamliner?
    A. T shw imprvements in reducing fuel airliners bum.
    B. T cmpare different aircraft f a similar size.
    C. T prve the efficient use f lighter materials.
    D. T infrm the readers f an advanced aircraft.
34.Which is practical fr us t d accrding t the text?
    A. Cut dwn n ur travel by plane.
    B. Ensure ur wn air travel is green.
    C. Lk frward t technlgical develpment.
