Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he's housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.
For decades, Bryant, 61, worked with teens aging out of New York's child welfare system. His job was to find services that would make the transition (过渡) to living on their own easier. But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New York City Administration for Children's Services office wasn't enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.
In an interview last month, Bryant told Romario Vassell, 21, one of his foster children, that agreeing to care for him was definitely one of the best decisions he made in foster care. Bryant told Vassell that he was nervous when he took in his first foster child. He said, "I lived alone at that point, and he was a kid that nobody wanted to take because of his behaviors. He got in a fight and he appeared at my house." Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.
Bryant had been Vassell's assigned case worker when they met. Bryart suggested that Vassell, then an untidy 18-year-old, consider foster care as an option to get out of the home lead shelter where he was staying.
At first, Vassell was hesitant. "I didn't know how foster care was." he said.
Since living with Bryant, Vassell now feels like he has a support network. "If I feel down and like I'm
Bryant told Vassell, "Whatever you've learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that's what's important to me."
4. What is the second paragraph mainly about?

B. An introduction of Bryant's task.

D. The reason for Bryant's being a foster parent.
5. How did Bryant's family feel about his decision?
A. Disappointed. B. Ashamed. C. Puzzled. D. Embarrassed.
6. What can we know about Vassell from the text?
A. He is now living alone. B. He was Bryant's first foster kid.
C. He refused Bryant's offer at first. D. He was instructed to pay kindness forward.
7. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To call for social care. B. To praise Bryant's deeds.
C. To tell the story of Vassell. D. To comment on Bryant's life.

As the new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting whizzes and bangs to light up the sky. The appeal of fireworks could fizzle out with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows, though.
Ollie Howitt, a leader of SkyMagic, which used a team of 300 drones to create a display for London's new year celebration last year, said demand had increased substantially. "We do think it's going to be something that's ever catching on, as opposed to it being a short-lived sort of fashion people have suddenly got interested in. Drones are reusable and there's no fallout. In that sense they're a very good, sustainable option," she said.
But not everyone agrees. A spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. "Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have serious concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium batteries which are known not to be all that 'green'," they said.
An RSPCA spokesperson said that while drones were a possible idea to try to reduce the impact of displays on animals, there were downsides. "Drones are not without their own negative issues such as scaring horses or crashing into birds, and can cause disturbance to animals and members of the public. It's therefore important for their effects to be fully considered and measures taken to minimize the chance of accidents," they said.
Some express the opinion that the use of fireworks and drones don't exclude each other. The sight, sound and gunpowder smell of fireworks will always provide its own unique thrill.
"We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don't really see it as a one-replacing-the-other at all. We feel as if it's just another tool in the chest for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do with the show you're putting on," said Howitt, noting that while fireworks give a loud, emotive, big performance, drones offer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.
8. What does the underlined phrase "fizzle out" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Catch on. B. Wind up. C. Create an impact. D. Make a comeback.
9. What does Howitt think about a drone display in paragraph 2?
A. It's definitely an upward trend. B. It'll get us to reflect on energy crisis.
C. It's nothing but a temporary phenomenon. D. It'll excite the public curiosity about science.
10. Which of the following may Howitt suggest according to the last paragraph?
A. Promoting the production of drones. B. Diversifying the functions of drones.
C. Prohibiting the displays of fireworks. D. Staging drone shows as an alternative.
11. In which section of a website can we read this text?
A. Advertisement. B. Business. C. Health. D. Environment.
D
For generations, depression has been seen as an illness, disorder or even weakness. Such an idea makes sense because depression causes suffering and even death. But what if we've got it all wrong?
The common wisdom is that depression starts in the mind with abnormal thinking. That leads to symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or tiredness. Now, models like the Polyvagal Theory suggest that we've got it backward. It's the body that detects danger and initiates a defense strategy meant to help us survive. That biological strategy is called immobilization, and it demonstrates in the mind and the body with a set of symptoms we call depression.
When we think of depression as unnecessary suffering, we are telling people with depression that they are not part of the group, they are not right and they don't belong. That robs them of hope. But when we begin to understand that depression, at least initially, happens for a good reason we lift the shame. Instead, people with depression are courageous survivors, not damaged sick people.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is constantly scanning our internal and external environment for signs of danger. If our ANS detects a threat or even a simple lack of safety, its next strategy is the fight or flight response, which we often feel as anxiety. Sometimes the threat is so bad or goes on for so long, that the nervous system decides there is no way to fight or to flee. At that point, there is only one option left: immobilization.
The immobilization response is the original biological defense in higher animals. It dulls pain and makes us feel disconnected. Think of some reptiles (爬行动物), which shut down their bodies to avoid cold temperatures and the lack of food and water. In humans, people often describe feeling "out of their bodies" during extremely unpleasant events, which has a defensive effect of reducing the emotional shock. This is important because some things are so terrible, we don't want people to be fully present when they happen. What incredible capacity of our biology to find a way in hard times!
12. Why does the author mention the Polyvagal Theory?
A. To offer a standard for identifying depression.
B. To raise people's awareness of mental problems.
C. To make sense of how depression affects people.
D. To correct a commonly held idea about depression.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Depression can bring people in crisis hope.
B. People may feel it wrong to have depression.
C. Depression is an unnecessary human emotion.
D. People often feel proud of fighting depression.
14. What is "immobilization" in the text?
A. Building up anxiety. B. Rising to challenges.
C. Shutting down action. D. Pulling through a crisis.
15. In which order does our body react to an extremely unpleasant situation?
① seek to work out solutions
② become aware of a threat
③ experience emotional shock
④start defensive disconnection
A. ②③④① B. ④②①③ C. ②①③④ D. ④①②③

For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing heavier and heavier, until one day they can't carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义). 16 _______ The following ways will assist you in your journey to living a simper yet fuller life.
17 _______ Most people's living space is filled with things that are never used and don't contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don't, and throw the latter right into the dustbin — or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.
Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy. 18 _______ We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.
Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and every moment. We're usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else. 19 _______
Develop mindfulness. 20 _______Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what's happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so. Perhaps the most common way is to sit for about 30 minutes somewhere comfortably with your upper back straight and pay full attention to your breath as it's coming in and out through your nose. In this way, you won't be distracted by your thoughts.

It was an unusually hot day. Exhausted after football practice, I headed for the bus stop to wait for Bus 112 which would take me home. I was beginning to drift off to sleep when I saw the bus arriving. The sun was in my eyes and that was probably the reason why I got onto Bus 113.
I was glad to get a seat. Within minutes, I was sting against the window, fast asleep. When I opened my eyes, it was dark outside. I was the only passenger left on the bus. I could not recognize the part of town we were passing through. I pressed the bell and the bus stopped. I planned to hop across the road and catch a bus going the opposite direction. However, I found myself on a quiet street with a row of shops that were all closed. I kicked myself for not asking the driver for directions.
As I was wondering what to do, a motorcycle came down the road. The rider looked at me as he passed and then stopped a short distance away. I went to him and asked him how to get back to the City Square. He smiled and nodded. He patted the back seat and said that he would send me home. Without a second thought, I climbed up behind the rider. He turned the motorcycle around and headed in the direction I wanted. We travelled for about 15 minutes and the surroundings still looked unfamiliar to me. The rider made a few turns and I knew I was hopelessly lost. I asked him where we were going, He did not answer but increased his speed. Alarm bells started to ring in my head.
I tapped the man on the shoulder and told him to stop. He leaned forward and went at high speed now. Then he slowed down to turn into a dark and narrow road that led into an oil palm plantation. I had had enough.

But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New York City Administration for Children's Services office wasn't enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.
Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.
Bryant told Vassell, "Whatever you've learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that's what's important to me."
Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he's housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.
The appeal of fireworks could fizzle out with the growing use of drones(无人机)for light shows, though.
We do think it's going to be something that's ever catching on, as opposed to it being a short-lived sort of fashion people have suddenly got interested in. Drones are reusable and there's no fallout. In that sense they're a very good, sustainable option 故选A。
We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don't really see it as a one-replacing-the-other at all. We feel as if it's just another tool in the chest for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do with the show you're putting on
Now, models like the Polyvagal Theory suggest that we've got it backward."(现在, 像迷走神经理论这样的模型表明我们把它弄反了。)
When we think of depression as unnecessary suffering, we are telling people with depression that they are not part of the group, they are not right and they don't belong. That robs them of hope."(当我们认为抑郁症是不必要的痛苦时, 我们就是在告诉抑郁症患者,他们不属于这个群体,他们是不对的,他们不属于这个群体。
It dulls pain and makes us feel disconnected." 以及"Think of some reptiles(爬行动物),which shut down their bodies to avoid cold temperatures and the lack of food and water."(想想一些爬行动物,它们关闭自己的身体以避免寒冷的温度和缺乏食物和水。)
If our ANS detects a threat or even a simple lack of safety, its next strategy is the fight or flight response, which we often feel as anxiety. Sometimes the threat is so bad or goes on for so long, that the nervous system decides there is no way to fight or to flee. At that point, there is only one option left: immobilization." In humans, people often describe feeling "out of their bodies" during extremely unpleasant events, which has a defensive effect of reducing the emotional shock."(在人类中, 人们经常描述在极度不愉快的事件中"欣喜若狂"的感觉,这具有减少情绪冲击的防御作用。)
So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? 故选A。
17. 根据"Most people's living space is filled with things that are never used and don't contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don't, and throw the latter right into the dustbin-or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.
18. 根据We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy. We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections.
Do one thing at a time.(一次只做一件事。) 选项中concentrate on a single thing at a time和上文段首Do one thing at a time语义一致。故选F。
Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what's happening in the present.

I jumped of vehicle and fell onto the ground. The man turned around and rode towards me. I swung my schoolbag at him and he lost his balance and fell off his motorcycle. Without looking back, I just ran and ran. When I dared to stop, I found that I was on a main road. Cars were passing by, I was relieved to see a taxi and waved desperately, praying that it would stop. It did. I got in and gave the driver my house address, shaking uncontrollably.
I got off the taxi and rushed into my house. I threw myself into my mum's arms and broke into tears. When my family learned what had happened, they were horrified. My parents told me that I should have just looked for a public phone and called home when I was lost. I knew I had been foolish to believe a stranger. It was a frightening experience which I hoped would never happen to me again. It's better to be safe than sorry.
