BEIJING/SAO PAULO — Chinese traditions like cockfighting, kiteflying and fireworks have been quite common in Brazil for many years.
Despite the thousands of kilometers between them, China's historical and artistic mark on Brazil has existed for about 300 years, said Brazilian sinologist (汉学家) Jose Roberto Teixeira Leite in his book China in Brazil.“Influences from China can date from the colonial period, even up to the time after Brazil's independence.” The commercial relationship between the two countries has existed for a long time, he noted, adding that incoming ships would fill up Brazilian cities like Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Recife with Chinese products like porcelain (瓷器), silk and fans.
He also found Chinese influence not only in the arts and architecture of Brazil but also in the most diverse areas of Brazilian society, like the economy, medicine and popular culture.“At the end of the 19th century, in Pernambuco, (a state in northeastern Brazil), there_was_a_custom_that_children_slept_with_clothes_decorated_with_Chinese_dragons.” Teixeira added.
The book took him about 15 years to finish.“The impact of the book surprised me, though it was published by a university publisher and it had a print run of just 1,000 copies,” he said.“Some have said that the book represents a turning point in Chinese studies in Brazil.”
Besides, the sinologist did research on the mark and presence of China in the architecture and arts of Brazil.“It was through art that China awoke in me, first, curiosity, after that, interest, and finally, passion,” Teixeira said.
In 1992, the sinologist visited Macao to do research for his doctoral thesis about the marks and presence of China in Brazil, and that trip impressed him a lot.In 2013, Teixeira had a chance to visit the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai, and got to know “the past and present of the great country culturally, as well as its incredible material development.”

What's the point in dining out when we can have whatever meal we want delivered to our homes as we watch movies on our giant flatscreen TVs? According to statistics from Technomic, 86% of consumers are using offpremise (非经营场所的) channels at least once a month, and a third of consumers are using it more than they did a year ago.
Most restaurant companies are chasing these trends simply to keep up with quickly changing consumer demands. Fazoli's has spent the past two years investing in its drivethrough, carryout, catering and delivery businesses, and has launched a new loyalty app aimed at making carryout orders easier. These efforts have paid off so far — offpremise sales are up 18.5% over last year for the company, said Jennifer Crawford, director of offpremise sales at Fazoli's.
But, she notes that sales aren't the only benefit to giving priority to these channels. “The offpremise channel is a great opportunity to communicate and connect with a new consumer group,” Crawford said. “Many of our offpremise guests have not dined in a Fazoli's or experienced our menu. With options like thirdparty delivery and online ordering, we have the capability to tap into potential new guests.”
Sales lifts and new customer potential are great rewards, to be sure. But that doesn't mean carrying out offpremise channels comes without challenges. Crawford said a big one is the lack of control and maintaining the guest relationship. “When a guest dines in, we can provide a level of service that improves the consumer dining experience,” she said. The lack of control extends into the digital experience, as thirdparty apps can also be an issue. “Orders are not often processed properly due to the dropdown menus and default (默认) orders in thirdparty software,” Crawford said. She adds that staffing issues can also arise when heavy delivery periods overlap strong inrestaurant traffic and maintaining food quality and integrity (完整) during drive time is tricky with certain dishes.
Nevertheless, Crawford believes the juice is very much worth the squeeze. “Across the industry, dinein traffic continues to decline or remain flat. If brands are not driving sales through catering, carryout and delivery, they are missing out on income,” she said.

Dear Jane,
I'm glad to hear from you and you are welcome to China in July. The followings are some Chinese social customs.
Firstly, we greet each other by saying “Hello!”or asking such questions as “Where are you going?” or “Are you busy?”Secondly, when praised, we reply with “Oh, no!” or “I'm overpraised.” to show good manners. Next, when receiving a gift, we usually say “It's unnecessary.” in addition to “Thanks!” to show politeness and then put it away. Finally, at dinner parties, we talk loudly and touch glasses when drinking to someone's health or success to show that we're warm.Anyhow, there are different customs in different cultures. If you follow the proverb “Do as the Romans do when in Rome.”, you'll enjoy more of your stay here.
I hope what's mentioned above will be helpful and I am really looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
