1.Mther Teresa(1910-1997)
Mther Teresa funded the Missinaries f Charity in 1948.Thrugh it,she has dedicated her life t helping the pr,the sick and the dying arund the wrld,particularly thse in India.She funded the Kalighat Hme fr the Dying and a leper clny was established under her guidance.Her selfless wrk has brught her many awards,including the Nbel Peace Prize in 1979.
2.Madame Curie (1867-1934 )
Marie Curie,a great wman scientist,was brn in Pland in 1867.Frm her early childhd Marie lved t study and hped t becme a scientist.Her interest in science was encuraged by her father,a teacher f physics.
In 1891,she left Pland fr France and entered the University f Paris.Fur years later,she graduated with the highest grade in her class.After graduatin she remained in the same university,ding scientific research wrk.In rder t discver smething that gave ff a kind f radiatin,she did experiments mst carefully again and again.She failed many times,but she didn’ t lse heart.Finally in 1902,she,tgether with her husband,succeeded in finding the radiactive element— radium.Owing t their achievement,the Curies received the Nbel Prize in Physics in 1903.
In 1911,she wn anther Nbel Prize,this time all by herself in chemistry and thus she became the first wman scientist t win a Nbel awards.
She died in 1934,bviusly as a result f the effects f the radiatins with which she wrked fr ver 30 years.
3.Elizabeth Fry ( May 21,1780-Octber 12,1845)
Elizabeth Fry was a prisn refrmer,scial refrmer and philanthrpist.She was brn in a Quaker family n May 21,1780.She tk an interest in her teenager years in the pr,the sick,and the prisners.In 1812 she first visited Newgate Prisn in Lndn and was very shcked at the cnditins she fund there.Frm then n she began t wrk t imprve prisn cnditins in Britain.She supplied the wmen f Newgate Prisn with clthes and established a schl and a chapel.In 1817 Elizabeth Fry and eleven thers,frmed the Assciatin fr the Imprvement f the Female Prisners in Newgate.The next year she was invited t give evidence t a Huse f Cmmns Cmmittee n Lndn Prisns.She described in detail the lives f the prisners,and recmmended that wmen prisners shuld be lked after by wmen instead f men,and stressed her belief in the imprtance f useful emplyment.By the 1820s Elizabeth Fry and her wrk had becme very well knwn in Britain.She faced criticism and prblems at varius times.Elizabeth Fry’s wrk was very imprtant because it started the mvement fr prisn imprvement.Her idea was that peple in prisn culd nt change their ways and lead useful lives if yu did nt give them a legal way f earning mney.She aimed at changing the prisners by educating them and changing the way they were treated.Her wrk was mentined as ne f the reasns that the Quakers gt the Nbel Peace Prize in 1947 and she was remembered in Britain by being put n the new five pund nte in 2000.
4.Sng Chingling (1893-1981)
Sng Chingling was ne f the Sng sisters,als knwn as Madame Sun Yet-sen.She was brn int a rich Christian family which played an imprtant rle in Chinese plitics in the first half f the 20th century.She and her tw sisters had a gd educatin.She went t study in Gergia,USA.In 1915 she married Dr Sun Yat-sen,funder f the Republic f China.
After Sun’s death in 1925,she was elected t the Kumingtang Central Executive Cmmittee in 1926.After the establishment f the Peple’s Republic f China,she became the Vice president f the Peple’s Republic f China,head f the Sin-Sviet Friendship Assciatin and Hnrary President f the All-China Wmen’s Federatin.In 1951 she was awarded the Satlin Peace Prize.Frm 1968 t 1972 she acted jintly with Dng Biwu as head f state.
On May 16,1981,tw weeks befre her death,she was admitted t the Cmmunist Party and was named Hnrary President f the Peple’s Republic f China.
5.Jane Gdall
Jane Gdall was appinted peace messenger f the United Natins(联合国和平使者) n April 16,2002.She was famus fr her creative wrk started 42 years ag in prtecting chimpanzees in Tanzania.Gdall went t Tanzania and studied chimps frm the 1960s.She went with three African helpers (and her mther fr the first mnth) t live in the Gmbe Natinal Park in East Africa.She made friends with the lcal African peple after setting up a clinic t help cure minr illnesses.Her life was spent fllwing and recrding the scial life and relatinships f the chimps.Her supplies and the care f her base camp were managed by her African helpers.Jane uncvered many aspects f chimpanzee behaviur during her first years in the Gmbe Natinal Park.Because f her research,we nw knw that chimpanzees hunt fr meat,use tls,and have different persnalities.
In 1965,Jane earned her PhD in Ethlgy frm Cambridge University.Sn she returned t Tanzania t cntinue her research and t establish a research center.Later,she became the Scientific Directr f the Gmbe Stream Research Centre,Tanzania.In 1977,Jane funded the Jane Gdall Institute fr Wildlife Research,Educatin and Cnservatin,USA t prvide supprt fr field research n wild chimps and encurage wildlife research.
6.Jdy Williams (1950- USA)
Jdy Williams was brn in the United States in 1950.After she gt her Master’s degree f Arts,she went t wrk fr tw years as a language teacher in Mexic,where she fr the first time saw the miserable life f the pr.She has wrked fr many years t help peple in Suth America by rganizing medical care (Medical Aid fr El Salvadr) and educatin (Nicaragua-Hnduras Educatin Prject).In 1992 she began t rganize the Internatinal Campaign t Ban Landmines (ICBL).As an ICBL crdinatr,she has written and spken extensively n the prblem f landmines and the mvement t ban them.She wrked with grups in different cuntries.In 1992 she was wrking with six grups but by 1997 mre than 1000 grups frm ver sixty cuntries had jined ICBL.Althugh the rganizatin became very large,the friendly way f rganizing ICBL cntinued and has prved very successful.Wrking in a unprecedented cperative way with gvernments and ther internatinal grups,the ICBL achieved its gal f an internatinal treaty banning landmines during the diplmatic cnference held in Osl in September 1997.In 1997 ICBL was given the Nbel Peace Prize and the wrk f Jdy Williams was recgnized and rewarded.She still wrks fr ICBL tday.
7.Jan f Arc (1412-1431)
Jan f Arc was brn in the small village f Dmremy in France.She lived at the time when there was a war between England and France called “The Hundred Years War”.Jan f Arc was imprtant because she encuraged the ld French king’s sn,the Dauphin,t be crwned in Rheims as the nly King f France.The French peple accepted him as the true king f France.Jan als shwed the French army hw t win battles and inspired them with the cnfidence t win.S Jan f Arc began the prcess by which the English left France and it became a cuntry in its wn right.
At the time Jan lived it was cnsidered wrng fr wmen t fight in the army.But Jan argued that Gd had spken t her and sent her t help the French army.She said Gd had spken t her thrugh tw messengers and they had encuraged her in her missin.When she was captured by the English,they did nt believe her stries f the messengers frm Gd and criticized her fr fighting and wearing men’s clthes.After a trial she was put t death.She was very patritic and did inspire the French t win against the English.She shwed hw brave she was by what she did just like Hua Mulan in China.
8.Lin Qiazhi (1901-1983)
Lin Qiazhi was brn in Xiamen in Fujian Prvince.Her parents were Christians and her father wrked at a university f Singapre.He believed in the educatin f wmen.Lin Qiazhi’s mther died when she was five and she went t live with her brther and his family.They fulfilled their father’s wishes by supprting her educatin even when they culd n lnger supprt the educatin f their wn children.At elementary schl ne f her teachers nticed hw quick and neat her knitting was and encuraged her t becme a dctr.
1921 She entered the Peking Unin Medical Cllege.
1929 She graduated frm the University with a PhD degree in gynaeclgy.
1932 She went t Lndn University Medical Schl and Manchester University Medical Schl fr further studies.
1933 She studied in Vienna and then returned t China t wrk fr wmen and children’s diseases.
1933 She studied abrad in the USA at the Chicag University Medical Schl.
1940 She returned t China as the Head f Gynaeclgy and ObstetricS:the first female head f such a department.
1941 War between Japan and the USA frced the hspital t clse s she pened a private hspital in the hutngs fr patients.After the war she returned t the hspital when it repened.
1949 After the Liberatin she went t study diseases f wmen in the cuntryside and wrte a bk t help them keep their babies healthy.She was very imprtant in inspiring wmen t becme dctrs and was ne f the funders f mdern gynaeclgy in China.She did imprtant research and used the methds she had learned abrad t imprve Chinese medicine.
1983 She died leaving her bdy fr medical research.Her wrk was recgnized when n the 100th anniversary f her birth a cpper statue t hnur her was placed in the Great Hall f the Peple,Beijing.
