The City f Lndn
Nearly all the ld City f Lndn was burned dwn in the fire f 1666.It started n a Sunday evening in a bread shp.On Tuesday evening, a quarter f a millin peple had n hmes, and the fire was still burning.
The ld St.Paul’s Cathedral, there fr a thusand years befre that, went in the fire. The Cathedral yu see tday was built by Sir Christpher Wren. There is als a mnument t the fire, near Eastcheap, where there fire started, and yu can climb up it and lk dwn n the city.Or, if yu feel like climbing, yu can g up the 627 stairs t the tp f St Paul’s and lk at the new city frm there.
After the fire f Lndn, sme Lndners made new hmes in new parts f Lndn.Others wanted t cme back, but fund the new huses t expensive. The city started t lse its peple and then, when the railways came, it was even easier t wrk in the city and live utside it.In the Secnd Wrld War, many hmes in the city were destryed by bmbs.
S nw the city has very few shps and hmes. The streets are full f thusands f ffices, and nly the street names make yu think f the peple wh used t live there, and bught their fd in Fish Street and Bread Street and Milk Street.
Sme peple d live in the new big blcks f flats near the Barbican (ne f the ld Rman gates), but ften they nly sleep there, and g away fr weekends. The shps are shut n Saturdays, and the restaurants and pubs shut at six ’clck in the evening. If yu g int the city at eight ’clck at night, yu feel yu are in dead city, while a kilmeter away; the streets f the West End are full f peple. It seems a sad end.
The Cckney
Almst everyne wh has heard f Lndn has heard f the term“Cckney(伦敦佬)”.Strictly speaking, in rder t call neself a Cckney, ne shuld have been brn“within the sund f Bw bells”, that is t say, within the sund f the bells f the church f St Mary-le-Bw, which stands nearly in the centre f the city f Lndn. But, in fact, all Lndn’s citizens wh were brn and bred in the city may call themselves Cckneys if they like.Hwever, the term is generally reserved fr the Lndner with a“Cckney accent”.
They Cckney accent is nt a particularly pleasant r meldius(悦耳的)ne, and the Cckney’s distrtin(扭曲, 变形) f the English language is such that the freigner ften finds it impssible t understand the speaker until his ear has becme acclimatized(适应) t the peculiar tnes. The principal characteristics f the Cckney accent cnsist in a general slurring f cnsnants and a distrtin f vwel sunds. The best knwn example f Cckney speech is mdern English literature is that f Eliza Dlittle, the herine f Bernard Shaw’s play, “Pygmalin”and f the musical adapted frm, “My Fair Lady”.
But if Cckney speech is unpleasant, the Cckney himself is usually far frm being s.The average Cckney is distinguished(区分, 辨别) by his quick wit, his ready sense f humr, his ability t“carry n”under unusual r difficult cnditins and by his willingness t be f help if he can.The Cckney’s humr is ften satirical(讽刺的) but it is never vicius(邪恶的); he is always ready t laugh at ther peple’s peculiarities(怪癖) but he is equally ready t laugh at his wn.He ften makes jkes under the mst difficult cnditins, a quality that was very apparent during Wrld War Ⅱ.This rather lugubrius type f humr is well exemplified(举例证明) by the title f an ld Cckney music hall sng: “Ain’t It Grand T Be Blming Well Dead.”
Nwadays, as the temp f life in big cities grws ever faster (althugh the Cckney ppses this prcess when he can), the pprtunities fr the Cckney t exercise his wit and humr diminish(减少, 变小).But if ne keeps ne’s ears pen n buses, in railway statins, in street markets and similar places, it will sn becme evident that the spirit f Cckney humr is still very much alive, althugh the ld Cckney prnunciatin is less cmmn until nw.
Mst peple wh call themselves Cckneys usually d s with sme pride. And, by and large, they are justified.
Famus Buildings in Lndn Hyde Park
Cvering an area f 350 acres (140 hectares) Hyde Park is ne f the best knwn Ryal parks.Originally wned by the mnks f Westminster Abbey, the park was later seized by Henry Ⅷ.Since then the park was histrically recgnized fr duels(决斗), hunts and plitical demnstratins. The Rlling Stnes and Pavartti have perfrmed cncerts here, amngst many thers. The Serpentine is an artificial lake used fr bating and bathing, and Speakers Crner situated at the nrth-east is packed with sapbx speakers airing their pints f view.
Westminster Abbey
Funded in 1065 by Edward the Cnfessr, Westminster Abbey has been the site f every Ryal Crnatin since 1066 (except thse f Edward Ⅴ and Edward Ⅷ) and is the final resting place f many svereigns, pliticians, pets and artists.Burial in the abbey is ne f the rarest and greatest hnrs in Britain. The nave is ver a hundred feet high, the tallest f any church in the cuntry.Behind the High Altar, in the Chapel f Edward the Cnfessr, the mst sacred part f the abbey, rests the Crnatin Chair.Crnatins and ryal weddings have been perfrmed here fr centuries.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace has served as the Mnarch’s permanent (永久的)Lndn residence, since the accessin(就职) f Queen Victria in 1837. Built n the site f a ntrius(声名狼藉的) brthel(妓院), its days began in 1702, as the Duke f Buckingham’s city residence.Later it was sld by the Duke’s sn, t Gerge Ⅲ in 1762.
Whilst the Queen is in residence the palace is clsed t the public.During the tw mnths that Her Majesty is nt at hme, the drs t the Palace are pen t the general public.Tickets must be purchased in advance fr a guided tur, thrugh 18 f the 661 rms.
Kew Gardens
Spring is prbably the best time t visit, but all year rund yu will find a stunning array f flwers, lawns, frmal gardens and btanical greenhuses.Mre than 50 000 different species f plants are cultivated at Kew. Cmmissined(代理) by Gerge Ⅲ’s mther, Princess Augusta, in 1759, Kew is nw ne f the wrld’s mst imprtant btanical research centres.Kew als ffers many histrical buildings including Palm huse, a metal and glass hthuse built arund 1845 and Kew Palace, nce a ryal palace dating frm the early 1600’s.
St Paul’s Cathedral
Set amngst the twer blcks f Lndn’s financial sectr, St Paul’s Cathedral has a dminating presence.St Paul’s Cathedral is the fifth church t stand n this site and fllwed that f Old St Paul’s, with its amazing 160 m spire(尖顶) which was ne f the wnders f medieval Eurpe until it was destryed by fire. The Cathedral is pen fr visitrs n Mnday t Saturday frm 8: 30.The last admissin t the Cathedral fr sightseeing is at 16: 00.The Cathedral Shp in the Crypt and the Crypt Cafe are pen frm 9: 00 t 17: 00 n Mnday t Saturday and frm 10: 30 t 17: 00 n Sundays.Special services and events may clse all r part f the Cathedral—smetimes at shrt ntice. It is a great privilege t welcme thse wh cme here frm many parts f the wrld t share the wrship f St Paul’s Cathedral.
Inside the enrmus dme lies the Whispering Gallery(回音廊).It is said that if yu whisper clse t the wall it can be heard ver a hundred feet away at the ther side f the dme, althugh the gallery is nrmally t busy t try this fr yurself.
Twer f Lndn
The Twer f Lndn started as a simple watch twer, built by William the Cnquerr, t keep an eye n the city. The Twer f Lndn has acted as a ryal residence, treasury, mint(造币厂)and a prisn. The Crwn Jewels are fund in the Jewel Huse, and fr many catching a glimpse f these precius stnes can be the highlight f their visit.
Twer Bridge
Despite being just ver ne hundred years ld, Twer Bridge ranks as ne f Lndn’s mst famus attractins. A steel frame clad in granite(花岗岩) and Prtland Stne, represents an amazing engineering achievement, allwing the rad crssing t be raised giving tall ships access t upper reaches f the Thames. It is an impressive sight althugh it happens infrequently.Inside the nrth twer an exhibitin explains the bridge’s histry and design.
Shakespeare in Lndn
Sme time between 1585 and 1592, it is believed that Shakespeare left Stratfrd fr Lndn and jined a cmpany f actrs as a perfrmer and a playwright.Legend lng held that Shakespeare left Stratfrd because he was being pursued by the law fr paching deer n private prperty.By 1592 Shakespeare had received sme recgnitin, thugh nt entirely psitive, as an actr and playwright. He was mentined in a pamphlet (A Grats-wrth f Wit) written by Rbert Greene.Greene refers t Shakespeare as an“upstart crw”in the Lndn theater and charges that Shakespeare was an unschled player and a writer wh used material written by his better educated cntempraries.Als during this year, the theaters in Lndn clsed due t the plague.By 1594 Shakespeare had jined a theater trupe knwn as the Lrd Chamberlain’s Men.Schlars attribute several f Shakespeare’s plays t this time perid.Althugh n ne can be certain f the dates f cmpsitin fr any f the plays, a cnsiderable amunt f schlarship has gne int the endeavr f accurately determining an apprximate time perid during which Shakespeare wrte each play.Sme believe that The Cmedy f Errrs, a farcical play centering n the mistaken identities f tw sets f twins, may have been Shakespeare’s first play.A few cunter that The Tw Gentlemen f Verna, which fcuses n the cnflict between rmantic lve and friendship, may have been Shakespeare’s first play.Sme schlars suggest that these plays may have been written as early as 1588 r 1589, while many thers date bth plays several years later, suggesting that they were written between 1592 and 1594.Other plays written during this early perid include ne f the histry tetralgies: Henry Ⅵ, Part One(1589-1590); Henry Ⅵ, Part Tw (1590-1591); Henry Ⅵ, Part Three(1590-1591); and Richard Ⅲ(1592-1593).Many peple believe that Henry Ⅵ, Part One was Shakespeare’s first play. This tetralgy treats the Wars f the Rses, the cnflict between tw factins f nbles. The last play f the sequence, Richard Ⅲ, ends with the establishment f the Tudr dynasty, t which belnged Queen Elizabeth, wh ruled during much f Shakespeare’s life.It is als believed that Shakespeare wrte Titus Andrnicus (1592-1594), The Taming f the Shrew(1593-1594), and Lve’s Labr’s Lst (1593-1595) during this perid f his life. Titus Andrnicus, Shakespeare’s earliest tragedy, deals with the cycle f revenge which destrys the families invlved in the play’s actin. The Taming f the Shrew is a lively cmedy featuring the willful Kate and her“tamer, ”Petruchi.Kate’s“taming”(her apparent and uncharacteristic submissin t her husband) ften trubles mdern audiences. Lve’s Labr’s Lst has been described as a satirizatin f the curtly and smewhat artificial lve f male nbles, and f the academic pursuits, which were ften mre fashinable than serius in Shakespeare’s time, f the nbility. In additin t these dramatic wrks, it is believed that Shakespeare wrte the pem Venus and Adnis and began cmpsing his snnets in 1592 r 1593.He eventually wrte 154 snnets.Between 1593 and 1594, he prbably wrte the pem The Rape f Lucrece.
In 1596 the patrn f the Lrd Chamberlain’s Men (Henry Carey, Lrd Hunsdn, the Queen’s Chamberlain) died, leaving Shakespeare’s cmpany under the patrnage f his sn, Gerge Carey, secnd Lrd Hunsdn. The next year, Shakespeare bught a spacius Stratfrd hme, knwn as New Place.Shakespeare cntinued t be nted as an actr; in 1598 he appeared in a perfrmance f Ben Jnsn’s Every Man in His Humr, and was listed as a principal actr in the Lndn perfrmance f the drama.Sn after, in 1599, Shakespeare and ther members f the Lrd Chamberlain’s Men leased land fr the Glbe Theater, which pened later that year.Als in 1599, the pet Jhn Weever published a pem (“Ad Guglielmum Shakespeare”) in which he praised Shakespeare as a pet and playwright.During this perid f his life, frm abut 1595 thrugh 1600, Shakespeare wrte a number f plays, including the secnd histrical tetralgy (Richard Ⅱ [1595]; Henry Ⅳ, Part One[1596-97]; Henry Ⅳ, Part Tw[1598]; and Henry Ⅴ[1599]).This tetralgy deals with the events leading up t the Wars f the Rses: Richard Ⅱ is usurped by Henry Blingbrk and later assassinated. The new king, Henry Ⅳ, wrries ver his rle in Richard’s death and abut the ability f his“madcap”sn, Hal, t rule.A subplt fcuses n Hal’s wild adventures with the cmical knight, Sir Jhn Falstaff.Hal becmes King Henry Ⅴafter his father’s death; he cnquers France and restres peace.King Jhn, a histrical drama dealing with the reign f King Jhn and the tragedy f the yung Arthur, is estimated t have been written between 1594 and 1596. A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the famus tragedy Rme and Juliet were prbably written in 1595 r 1596. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a fantastical cmedy cmplete with fairies and magic, deals with such tpics as lve, imaginatin, and art.One f Shakespeare’s mst ppular and well-knwn plays, Rme and Juliet is the stry f ill-fated lvers wh attempt t escape the disapprval f their feuding families. The cmedies The Merchant f Venice and The Merry Wives f Windsr are believed t have been written between 1596 and 1597.Identified by critics as a prblem play (ne that raises mral dilemmas which it des nt reslve), The Merchant f Venice is like The Tw Gentlemen f Verna in that it deals with the relatinship between rmantic lve and masculine friendship; the play als fcuses n the theme f mercy. The Merry Wives f Windsr is a farce dealing with middle class life and values; it features the knight Falstaff, wh was intrduced in Henry Ⅳ, Part One as Hal’s drunken and wayward cmpanin.Other plays written during this perid f Shakespeare’s life include Much Ad abut Nthing (1598-1599); Julius Caesar(1599); and As Yu Like It(1599-1600). Much Ad abut Nthing is the witty cmedy featuring Beatrice and Benedick. The play is smetimes cnsidered flawed by critics due t what they and many audiences see as the insensitive treatment f the female characters, particularly the falsely accused Her.The Rman tragedy Julius Caesar dramatizes the dwnfall f the title character and examines the nature f plitical rivalry, ambitin, and pwer. As Yu Like It depicts the beautiful Frest f Arden as a haven frm the trappings f curtly life.
Shakespeare als wrte several cmedies during these years, including All’s Well That Ends Well (1601-1603); Twelfth Night(1601-1602); and Measure fr Measure(1604). All’s Well That Ends Well and Measure fr Measure have bth been tagged as prblem plays. The first cmedy ends abruptly with Bertram’s sudden acceptance f his wife Helena, whm he had essentially abandned earlier in the play.In Measure fr Measure, deceptin plays a central rle in the play’s actin; this includes the deceptin perpetuated by a character depicted as a paragn f virtue, Isabella. Twelfth Night is typically seen as ne f Shakespeare’s mre mature cmedies.Like ther cmedies, it features sme disguise and rle-playing, such as that f ne the central figures, Vila, wh disguises herself as the page Cesari. The play als cncerns gender rles and class differences.
In this perid Shakespeare als prduced Greek and Rman dramas, including Trilus and Cressida(1601-1602); Antny and Clepatra (1605-1607); Crilanus (1607-1608); and Timn f Athens(1607-1608). Trilus and Cressida, a Greek drama, emphasizes the differences between the ideal and the real by prtraying legendary Greek figures as peple with less-than-admirable qualities. Antny and Clepatra is the stry f the lve and passin between the famus Rman general and the sensuus, legendary Egyptian queen. Crilanus is a Rman plitical tragedy dealing with issues f character and pride.Feelings f bitterness and disillusinment permeate the Greek drama, Timn f Athens.Shakespeare als wrte Pericles, Prince f Tyre prbably between 1607 and 1608. Pericles is an adventurus tale f a prince wh suffers the lss f his wife and daughter, but is, in the end, reunited with his family. Pericles is thught by sme schlars t have been a cllabrative effrt.
After 1608 Shakespeare’s dramatic prductin lessened smewhat. The Glbe Theater burned dwn, but was rebuilt a year later n the ppsite bank f the Thames River.During these years, Shakespeare wrte rmantic tragicmedies (that is, rmances featuring elements f bth tragedy and cmedy). The rmantic tragicmedies include Cymbeline(1609-1610); The Winter’s Tale(1610-1611); and The Tempest(1610-1611), Cymbeline and The Winter’s Tale are bth stries f lss and pain, but, like Pericles, they end with a happy reunin. The Tempest features the same elements f lss and reunin, but it als emphasizes the balance f wisdm and pwer that Prsper achieves at the play’s end.It has been nted that The Tempest was prbably the last play Shakespeare wrte n his wn, and that the character f Prsper, as ne wh manipulates events, stages masques, and directs the actins f ther characters, represents Shakespeare the playwright and his farewell t the theater.During this later perid, Shakespeare als wrte tw plays that mst schlars believe were cmpsed in cllabratin with the dramatist Jhn Fletcher: Henry Ⅷ(1612-1613), a histrical drama, and The Tw Nble Kinsmen (1613), the stry f the lve tw men have fr the same wman.It is als believed that Shakespeare wrte anther play arund 1612 r 1613, Cardeni, but it has been cmpletely lst.
