CHARLIE CHAPLIN
Charlie Chaplin,wh died in 1977,is cnsidered ne f the greatest and funniest actrs in the histry f the cinema.During his lifetime,he acted in 13 films,and he wrte,directed and acted in 69 ther films.
Chaplin was brn in Lndn in 1889 and first acted when he was five years ld.At the age f eight,he jined a grup f child dancers,and at seventeen he set ff t the USA with a grup f cmedy actrs.During a secnd trip t the USA in 1912,an imprtant film directr saw Chaplin acting a very funny part in a play.As a result,Chaplin gt his first film part in the States.
As early as his secnd film,Chaplin had develped his wn manner f acting,the ne that was t becme wrld-famus.He wre a small black hat,very wide trusers,a mustache and carried a stick that he swung in the air as he walked.Even his way f walking dwn the street and turning a crner culd be recgnized as his wn.In less than three mnths Chaplin acted in 11 films.In a shrt while he started directing films himself.During his first year,Chaplin acted in 35 films,many f which he wrte and directed himself.
Chaplin’s earliest films were silent films,because the equipment fr adding sund t films had nt yet been develped.The develpment f films with sund became a prblem fr Chaplin,as he was uncertain abut making films with dialgue.Instead,he cntinued t make films withut dialgue,but he added music,which he wrte himself.Tw f his greatest films,“City Lights” and “Mdern Times” were f this kind.
Chaplin’s later films,hwever,were nt well received.He made nly six films between 1940 and 1966 and nly the first f these is still ppular tday.Chaplin lived the last years f his life in Switzerland,where he was buried in 1977.Befre he died,he was hnured in a number f ways fr his cntributins t the film industry.
One f Charlie Chaplin’s mst famus films was “The Gld Rush”,which was made in 1925.The film was set in Califrnia in the middle f the nineteenth century.At that time,gld was discvered in Califrnia and thusands f peple rushed there t lk fr gld,s it became knwn as “the gld rush”.Peple said gld culd easily be picked up by washing sand frm the river in a pan f water.This was knwn as “panning fr gld”.
