This is the first teaching perid f this unit.The central part f this perid is the reading passage with the name f A Shrt Histry f Western Painting shwing the students the histry f Western painting.
Warming Up gives students fur questins t discuss,aiming at preparing students fr bth the cntent and the grammar f the unit.
Pre-reading prvides three questins t help students fcus n the tpic f the reading passage and leads the students t think abut any persnal experiences f Western art they may have,such as things abut art galleries,paintings in galleries,sme Western artists and paintings.
Reading mainly intrduces the histry f Western painting.There are fur majr mvements in Western art.Scial,plitical and cultural changes cntribute t the changes in artistic styles.There are fur pictures f paintings in the passage representing the fur majr mvements.After a glance at the title f the text and the headlines within it we knw that it is a histrical reprt,in which there are many time expressins.Then we can knw the tpic f the text and hw the infrmatin is rganized—in the rder f time,frm the earliest t the present.
Cmprehending cnsists f fur written r ral exercises fr the students t d s as t help the students t get a better understanding f the text,that is t say,t help the teacher t check hw much the students have understd the text.

The Chinese have fr centuries seen painting as the highest frm f art.Chinese paintings have an air f living nature,harmny and peace that is nt always fund in the art f ther civilizatins.It is entirely different frm Western painting,but that difference is hard t grasp and express.The fllwing are sme different frms f art:
Figure painting:It includes prtraits,stry painting and genre painting(风俗画)with figures as the main subject.Lines are the key pint.
Landscape painting:Chinese landscape paintings can be divided int blue-and-green landscape,gld-and-green landscape,light-purple-red landscape and water ink landscape accrding t the clrs used in paintings.The ne withut utlines is called bneless landscape.
Flwer and bird painting:Flwers,rcks and birds are usually the main subjects f this kind f paintings.Technically,there are detailed style with clrs and free style with ink.
Curt painting:It refers t the wrks dne by thse prfessinal painters emplyed by the ryal curt,r imitatins f their wrks by ther painters.

Chinese Painting
Chinese painting is generally divided by subject matter int fur brad categries:figures,landscapes,flwers and birds,and bamb and rcks.The first three categries succeeded each ther in the summits f their develpments,while the painting f bamb and rcks became a casual pleasure f the educated elite frm the 12th century n.Befre the Han Dynasty,funded in 202 B.C.,there was already a traditin f figure painting and prtraiture f which remnants survive n later brnzes,jades,and pttery.During the Han Dynasty,the art f depicting figures became increasingly elabrate.Rulers used didactic art t emphasize cdes f gvernment.Surviving examples f stne engraving and wall painting shw strng and lively drawing.
Landscape
The art f landscape painting frmed the central and mst standing traditin in Chinese painting.On a basis f Taist cmmunin with nature and strengthened by Buddhism,there was a strng literary traditin f seclusin amng,and meditatin upn the frests,streams and muntains.China's landscape painting brught nature's presence t wherever man desired it.Elements f landscape are already present in art f the Han Dynasty,but develpment did nt really begin until the Tang Dynasty.
The succeeding Nrthern Sung Dynasty(960-1127)has ften been called the Glden Age f Chinese Landscape.The differences in apprach and technique that naturally appeared became gradually categrized int traditins:the nrthern and suthern schls.
Birds and Flwers
In the Tang Dynasty at least ne painter,Tia Kuang-yin,was already knwn as a specialist in birds and flwers.Hwever,the first tw imprtant names in bird and flwer painting,Huang Chuan and Hsu Hsi,ccur in the 10th century.Huang Chuan,a subject f the latter Shu Dynasty,inherited the traditins f the Tang Dynasty.His paintings f flwers and birds were in an accrdingly archaic style,with strict cnventins and cnservative attentin t careful realism.Hsu His,wh lived under the Suthern Tang Dynasty created the “bneless” m-ku style in which frms are built up with pale washes and utlines are nt used.His inspiratins were unrestrained and the schl he initiated was cnsidered much the mre creative.Mi Fu,the leading literati critic f the 11th century remarked that ten paintings by Huang Chuan were nt wrth ne by Hsu Hsi.Later bird and flwer painters generally belnged t either the Huang r the Hsu traditin.
Stnes and Bamb
Stnes and bamb riginally appeared as backgrund bjects in ther types f paintings but gradually evlved int a separate genre.The 10th century Suthern Tang ruler Li Hu-chu develped a trembling brush technique in calligraphy that was als particularly suitable fr painting bamb and rcks.Tang Hsi-ya,an artist f the same time,adapted it fr that purpse.In the fllwing Sung Dynasty,the painting f bamb became mre and mre ppular and many famus schlars such as Wen T'ung and Su Shih were als well knwn fr their paintings f bamb.
