Wendy lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Darling, and her brothers, John and Michael, at number 14 (the house number on their street).

The children had a nurse because the neighbours’ children had nurses, and Mr. Darling wanted to be like his neighbours. But the family was poor so their nurse wasn’t like other children’s nurses. She was a big dog and her name was Nana.

Nana put the children to bed every evening and she looked after them if they cried in the night. Her kennel was in the children’s bedroom, just next to their beds.

Nana was a good nurse, but Mr. Darling was a bit worried. He worried about the neighbours. Sometimes he thought, “What do they think of me? Do they think that the Darlings are a strange family because the children’s nurse is a dog?” He also thought that Nana didn’t like him. But Mrs. Darling always said, “Nana loves you very much, George.”

The Darling family was a very happy family. Sometimes Mr. and Mrs. Darling and their children all danced around the sitting room together. What a lovely tie they had! But then, Peter Pan arrived! One morning Mrs. Darling found some leaves on the bedroom floor. She was surprised because it was a strange place to find leaves. When Wendy saw them, she smiled and said, “Oh! It’s Peter again! He is a naughty boy! He never cleans his feet.” Wendy told her mother that Peter Pan came into their bedroom during the night. It was the first time that Mrs. Darling heard about Peter Pan.

4Why did the family choose Nana as the children’s nurse?

ABecause they were not rich enough to pay for a nurse.

BBecause the children loved Nana better than anyone else.

CBecause the parents were too busy to look after the children.

DBecause they wanted a nurse that was the same as their neighbours’.

5What does the underlined phrase “Her kennel” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    ANana’s food. BNana’s toy. CNana’s house. DNana’s clothes.

6What was Mr. Darling really worried about?

AIf the dog could take good care of his children.

BWhere he could find a nurse just like his neighbours.

CHow his children could get along well with the nurse.

DWhat his neighbours would think about him and his family.

7Which of the following best describes Peter Pan according to this passage?

AWendy got to know him earlier than her mother.

BMrs Darling invited him home to play with the children.

CHe shared happiness with the Darling family all the time.

DHe was a clever boy playing with the children every morning.

Many people believe that toys are mainly made for kids. When we grow up, we should put away such childish things.

But now many grown-ups are getting them out again.

According to data from the market research firm NPD Group, toys bought by people over the age of 12 account for 23 percent of the European market. Among them, adults are still the main force. In 2019, Beijing’s Toy Show attracted tens of thousands of visitors, including many grown-ups.

But why are adults interested in these seemingly “childish” things?

Toys can “bring back happy childhood memories” noted website SWNS Digital. Many adults are under a lot of pressure at home and at work. Items that they were familiar with in childhood can remind them of easier times.

Rob Willner, 25, is one such person who finds solace in items from the past. At his home in London, he keeps two boxes of loose childhood Lego tucked away under a bed, as well as various large “sentimental” models on shelves in his house.

When he comes home after a hard day, he often plays with the toys. “It reminds me of the playful side of life, but also helps me to keep perspective. Lego isn’t great, but it’s fun, and helps you to think about what’s really important,” he told The Telegraph.

There is another reason for the rise in popularity of toys among adults. This pastime offers pressure-free creativity. Even hobbies such as baking and painting can be shadowed by the worry that the results will fail to please other people. Dressing up a doll or playing with a model train set doesn’t come with a lot of pressure to please others.

It seems that adults are no longer taking their childhood freedom for granted. After all, just as UK artist David Hockney said,“Play is serious.”

8Why are toys popular among adults according to website SWNS Digital?

AThey don’t want to grow up at all. BPlaying helps develop and improve social skills.

CThey want to get along well with their kids. DToys can bring back positive memories.

9How does Rob Willner benefit from playing with toys after work?

AIt makes him more creative at work. BIt helps him realize important things in life.

CIt makes him think more about the past. DIt helps him connect with other people.

10What does Paragraph 8 mainly talk about?

AThe rising pressure to please others that adults face. BHow playing with toys can increase creativity at work.

CAnother reason why adults love to play with toys. DThe reason why young people don’t cook nowadays.

11The best title for the passage may be ________.

ARemaining a Kid at Heart BLet’s Put Away Childish Toys

CHow to Go Back to Childhood DAdults Are Under Lots of Pressure

You are probably familiar with the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. A piece of recent research by the Chinese University of Hong Kong may change the saying into “An apple a day may keep aging away”.

The research chose fruit flies (果蝇), as they share many genes (基因) with humans. The researchers either fed the fruit flies as usual or added apple extract (浓缩物) to their food.

It turned out that the fruit flies which fed on food with apple extract lived an average (平均) of 55 days – five days longer than the flies that were normally fed. The research group also found it easier for these flies to walk, climb and move about as they aged.

The scientists said that some dangerous chemicals in the flies’ bodies would cause illnesses and aging. But the antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in the apple extract helped clean them up.

The scientists also studied diets of thousands of women. They found that those who ate apples often were 20 percent less likely to have heart disease and strokes (中风).

Some scientists studied the apple’s genes. They are trying to grow special apples full of antioxidants. They believe the antioxidants would keep people from heart disease and even cancer.

12Why did the scientists use fruit flies in the research?

ABecause they love to eat apples.

BBecause they are easy to catch.

CBecause they have similar genes to those of humans.

DBecause they can live longer than other insects.

13What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

AHow many groups the fruit flies are divided into.

BWhat the results of the research are.

CHow long the fruit flies can live.

DWhy the apple can keep aging away.

14What does the underlined word “them” refer to in the fourth paragraph?

    AThe apple extract BThe chemicals

    CThe antioxidants DThe fruit flies

15Where can you probably find this passage?

AFrom a magazine of medicine. BFrom a newspaper of sports.

CFrom a website of animals. DFrom a book of stories.
