In 1957, Max Vernon Mathews wrote the first computer program called Music, which enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. He was then working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeen-second piece of music he had written.
The computer was so slow that it took an hour to play the piece of music. So Mathews moved the work to a tape player to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge.
The science fiction writer Arthur C.Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He heard a computer “sing” the song Daisy Bell on devices (设备) and learned about the programs developed by Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book 2001:A Space Odyssey, which was later made into a movie.
Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances.
He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton, which looked like two drum sticks. It enabled the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music (管弦乐) played on a computer by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.
Mathews said he believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounded like a violin. But with his Music, the way a violin sounded would be unlimited. He did not want computer sounds to replace live music, but he hoped computers would one day be considered serious instruments.
4.Why did Clarke visit Bell Laboratories?
A.To make his book into a movie.
    B.To help Mathews develop Music.
C.To satisfy his own curiosity about Music.
D.To gather materials for his literary creation.
5.What electronic music tools did Mathews create?

B.Something used to create special sounds.
C.Something used to improve computer music.
D.Something used to create computer music.
6.What did Mathews think of his Music?
A.It was more pleasant to the ear.
B.It could help make more sounds.
C.It would finally replace the violin.
D.It was more popular than live music.
7.What can we learn about Mathews?
A.He is the father of computer music.
B.His creation succeeded on the first try.
C.He wrote Music to replace instruments.
D.He changed the functions of computers.

Reading and writing poetry can be a very personal experience. Poets use language as a way of expressing their feelings. Poems can describe the beauty of nature, a person, a dream or a memorable event. Most people have tried writing poetry at some time. For children, it is a good way to explore language and have fun with words as well as to express themselves.
But teachers and psychologists have found another use for poetry as a form of therapy (疗法) to help people. Writing poetry can help people deal with changes in their lives—death or feelings of sadness, drug or alcohol problems or mental illness. By writing down your feelings, you can learn to understand yourself better and make your voice heard if you feel you are being ignored. Writing a poem might be a way of telling someone something when you do not feel able to talk about it face-to-face. And even if people are ill or having difficulties in their lives, it doesn't mean they have lost their sense of humor. Poems written as therapy can be funny too, as laughter is also considered to be very good medicine.
Students at a special school in Dudley, England, read and write poems every day. Some of the poems they write are very good, but their reason for writing is not just to be creative. All of them have problems. Some of them have long-term medical conditions, such as cancer, while others have personality disorders or psychological problems. By writing poems students are growing in self-confidence. The poems provide a channel through which they can communicate with the world, and express their feelings. They also help them to recognize and explore their problems and to develop a positive attitude to life.
But the poems are helping other people, too. The school has collected some of the students' poems and published them in a book which is being sold to raise funds for a local hospital. The book has proved very popular, giving students motivation and a sense of achievement.
8.How can poetry work as therapy?
    A.By solving physical problems.
    B.By staying away from humor.
    C.By communicating face-to-face.
    D.By promoting expression.
9.What makes the students of the school in Dudley special?
    A.They suffer from many problems.
    B.They know many poems.
    C.They are very confident.
    D.They are very positive.
10.What does the published book mean to the students?
    A.They'll get wealthy.
    B.They'll get inspired.
    C.They'll become popular psychologists.
    D.They'll become professional poets.
11.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The creation of poetry. B.The power of poetry.
C.The development of poetry. D.The appreciation of poetry.

A smart toilet could offer a mini health check every time you took a seat, scientists said recently, but privacy campaigners and potential users said the idea made them feel uncomfortable.
“The device would identify users through an anal scan using a camera fitted under the seat before checking their waste for disease markers, including early signs of cancer,” says the US-led team who developed the prototype.
“We know it seems strange, but as it turns out, your anal print is unique,” said Sanjiv Gambhir, a radiology(放射学) professor at Stanford University, who led the work on the project. “The smart toilet is the perfect way to make use of a source of data that's typically ignored,” Gambhir said. “Everyone uses the bathroom—there's really no avoiding it—and that enhances its value as a disease-detecting device.”
A set of devices fitted inside the toilet bowl identifies the users and monitors their waste for signs of ill health which could be shared with their doctors, researchers said in the scientific journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. Such devices could become commonplace in homes, said Gambhir, as consumers accept health monitoring tools like smartwatches and internet-connected home devices. But many were concerned about releasing their privacy, which the researchers found following a 300-person survey to assess acceptance. Three in ten respondents said they would not want to use a smart toilet, with only about half reporting they would be “somewhat” or “very” comfortable with it. The most commonly reported concerns were over privacy and data security, found researchers, who said gathered information would be stored in a secure, cloud-based system.
Despite those assurances(保证), privacy campaigners expressed fears about security problems. “Health data contains the most sensitive and revealing information about anyone,” said Edin Omanovic, advocacy director at London-based charity Privacy International. “Linking it to someone's biometric(生物统计的) ID risks exposing private details to third parties, either through data sharing or security drawbacks which leave back doors exposed.”
12.What does this smart toilet use to detect disease?
    A.A smartwatch. B.A seat. C.A cloud-based system. D.A camera.
13.What can we know about the disease-detecting devices?
    A.They are widely accepted.
B.Gambhir has confidence in their future.
C.Their function has been improved recently.
D.Signs of illness can be removed through them.
14.What can we infer about health data from the last paragraph?
    A.It should be taken seriously.
    B.It will be treated properly.
C.It may not be shared publicly.
    D.It can be exposed illegally.
15.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.The use of a smart toilet
B.The value of a smart toilet
    C.A smart toilet without privacy
D.A smart toilet with good intention

One of the easiest and most pleasing ways to express your creativity is by drawing. In addition, drawing can calm you down in many ways. It can help keep you away from negative thoughts and clear your mind. 16 Draw something that makes you comfortable. Content does not matter as much as the meaning you connect with whatever you choose to draw. If you find mountains or trees relaxing to be around, try your hand at drawing. You can also draw things like pets or buildings. 17 For example, draw a dog's head on a pig's body with a horse's legs and tail.
Just draw. Experiment on drawing with different color patterns and emotions. Believe it or not, drawing can help realize physical relaxation by lowering your blood pressure. Color your drawing with bright, exciting colors. Draw patterns. Start with changes of circles, as they're easier to draw. Simply cover a page in a pattern. Keep your subjects smiling. Whether you are drawing mountains, humans, or animals, add a face with a smile. 18
Go somewhere where you feel calm. Choose some quiet places. Turn off your phone, and avoid areas with television or computers. Some private places are best, as your drawing will not be forbidden by the presence of others, and you will be less likely to be bothered. Get outside. 19 Drawing outside can also give you ideas of things to draw.
Have fun. 20 Don't worry about the final product. And don't judge your artistic abilities. Lose yourself in the experience of creation! Sitting down to draw for just a few minutes can brighten your feelings. You'll feel energetic and may feel even more open-minded for the rest of the day.
    A.Let yourself enjoy the process.
B.Listen to music when you draw.
C.Simply being outside will calm you down.
D.Sure, it's silly but you'll probably smile back.
E.Hang up your work where it will catch your eye.
F.You can even try combinations of different animal parts.
G.And the enjoyment of drawing can help keep your stresses away.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was 21 to see that it was an English-English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(单语的) dictionary. 22 it was a dictionary intended for nonnative learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely 23 to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary but still not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the 24 bilingual(双语的)dictionaries, in which the words are 25 both in English and Chinese. My aunt even 30 that a Chinese “equivalent” could never give you the 31 meaning of a word in English! Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition(定义) of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning. 32 ,I have come to see what she meant.
Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n) 33 number of words, around 2,000,in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am 34 exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. 35 this, I can express myself more easily in English.

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after a performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin.
    “Thief!”
I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, and his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile. I asked, “Are you Mr. Ram's nephew, Michael? I'm his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside would come. It must be you. You're really like him!”
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out? I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much?”
“Yes, but I'm so poor that I can't afford it,” the boy replied.
“Then, I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw my huge color photo on the wall I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper's photo.
    Paragraph 1:

    A
根据第三段第一句We have THREE categories(类别) in the competition—animals, people and environment (a new category started this year). 故选A。
All photos should be sent through our website. The competition is open only to legal residents (居民) of the UK and Ireland who are between the ages of 7 and 14.
比赛 2.be open to...向……开放 3.enter v.参加;进入 4.make sure确保 5.date of birth出生日期 6.title n.
故选A。
表演;表现 6.make full use of充分利用 7.replace v.取代
    C
All of them have problems. Some of them have long-term medical conditions, such as cancer, while others have personality disorders or psychological problems. 故选A。
The book has proved very popular, giving students motivation and a sense of achievement.
探索 4.deal with处理,对付 5.ignore v.
Such devices could become commonplace in homes, said Gambhir, as consumers accept health monitoring tools like smartwatches and internet-connected home devices.
Linking it to someone's biometric(生物统计的) ID risks exposing private details to third parties, either through data sharing or security drawbacks which leave back doors exposed.
A smart toilet could offer a mini health check every time you took a seat, scientists said recently, but privacy campaigners and potential users said the idea made them feel uncomfortable. A项(智能马桶的使用)只是文章的部分内容;根据第三段中的that enhances its value as a disease-detecting device可知,文章提到增强了它作为疾病检测设备的价值,只是部分事实,因此B项(智能马桶的价值)不能概括全文;C项(没有隐私的智能马桶)与文章第四段中的 gathered information would be stored in a secure, cloud-based system表述不符。
独特的 6.make use of利用 7.ignore v.
    10.revealing adj.

A smart toilet could offer a mini health check every time you took a seat, scientists said recently, but privacy campaigners and potential users said the idea made them feel uncomfortable.
It can help keep you away from negative thoughts and clear your mind.(它可以帮助你远离消极的想法,清理你的头脑。)
For example, draw a dog's head on a pig's body with a horse's legs and tail.(例如,在猪身上画狗的头和马的腿及尾巴。)
Keep your subjects smiling. Whether you are drawing mountains, humans, or animals, add a face with a smile.(让你的绘画对象保持微笑。
Drawing outside can also give you ideas of things to draw.(在外面画画也能让你对要画的东西有想法。)
Don't worry about the final product. And don't judge your artistic abilities. Lose yourself in the experience of creation!(不要担心最终的结果。

Some private places are best, as your drawing will not be forbidden by the presence of others, and you will be less likely to be bothered.
because因为;although 尽管;unless除非;if如果。
I would look up words in the dictionary but still not fully understand the meaning. 故选A。
根据下文in which the words are 25 both in English and Chinese可知,作者已经习惯了熟悉的双语词典。
故选A。
more natural 更自然的;better更好的;easier 更容易的;more convenient更方便的。
故选A。
根据a Chinese “equivalent” could never give you the 31 meaning of a word in English可知,姑姑甚至宣称汉语中的对等物并不能给出确切的英文含义。
故选A。
根据上文after studying English at university for three years以及Therefore,she insisted...of its meaning.
故选A。
according to按照;in relation to关于,涉及;in addition to除……之外;because of因为。故选D。
    【高频词汇】 1.be intended for为…… 极其,非常 3.be used to习惯于 4.insist v.坚持;坚决要求 5.be exposed to接触

原句 When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary.
故填 to enjoy。
故填when。
故填because。
故填that。
故填 more。
故填who。
    3.refuse v.
    One possible version:
    Dear Pal,
How amazing to have a Food Fair! Chinese traditional cuisine is a good choice and it never fails in the world.
What about Mapo Tofu, a typical spicy dish enjoying worldwide popularity? Firstly you should cook tofu with bean-based sauce for about 15 minutes and then scatter meat and chilli oil over it. I bet the combination of spicy and salty flavors will make it hard to resist. Most importantly, the dish is not only delicious but also endowed with special meaning of being happy.
Get a kick out of the Food Fair!
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
A few years later, I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students. Fascinated by the gentle sound of one participant, I was wholeheartedly impressed by his wonderful performance and solid strength. As I flicked my eyes up to glance at the performer, I was so astonished to see a thin face, so familiar, yet now lit up with joy and confidence. The “thief”! For an instant, I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy's misconduct had made such a big difference!
    Paragraph 2:
After the competition, “Michael” ran to me,holding a violin box. He asked with a tremble in his voice, with his thin face reddening with excitement, “Sir, do you recognize me? The nephew! It's your kindness that enlightenes my life, so does your violin. Today, I can give back this violin to you without regret...” Tears welled up in my eyes. Never had I anticipated that a tiny white lie would inject such great power into someone and change his life.
