Canyoning
The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.
It was first done in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people jump from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).

Last September, British artist Sacha Jafri set the record for creating the world’s largest painting. Last week, the painting was sold for $62 million, which will go to charity.
As the COVID-19 spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai. Rather than feeling stuck, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference”.
He decided to create the world’s largest painting in a way that would include people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic. He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.
Using the children’s ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint in a huge dancing room in a fancy hotel. It took Mr. Jafri seven months to create the painting. He worked often up to 20 hours a day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1,000 paint brushes and 6,300 liters of paint to create the painting. The painting, which was over 1,600 square meters, was around the size of four basketball courts.
Mr. Jafri hoped that his painting, called “The Journey of Humanity”, would help bring the world together during a difficult time. Since Mr. Jafri’s goal was to raise money to help children suffering from the pandemic, the painting was split up into 70 large parts. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the parts separately, he could raise $30 million.
But when the auction (拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. A French businessman bought all the pieces. Knowing that the money would go to charity also motivated him to decide to pay more. He says he was poor when he grew up, so he’s glad to be helping children around the world by buying the painting.
24. How did Sacha Jafri create the large painting?
A. He finished the painting with kids in his room.
B. He got painting inspiration from kids’ pictures.
C. He made the painting under 140 kids’ guidance.
D. He filled his whole artwork with kids’ drawings.
25. What can we know about the large painting?
A. It remained complete all the time. B. It took the artist a lot of efforts.

26. Why did Sacha Jafri create the painting?
A. To help fight the pandemic. B. To develop kid’s love for art.
C. To show pandemic sufferings. D. To kill time and seek pleasure.
27. Which of the following words can describe the French businessman?
A. Modest and honest. B. Brave and determined.

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) has given more than £1 million towards tracking satellites and space junk in orbit.
The money will be given to seven companies that are working on ways to develop new sensor technologies that spot objects in space, working out what they are and track them.
Finding better ways to monitor everything currently in orbit has become a big priority because, with more and more satellites being launched, there is growing concern about the possibility of collisions.
Added to that are around 900,000 objects—made up of old space equipment that no longer works, and junk like gloves and tool kits accidentally dropped by astronauts—that are still in orbit. The UK Space Agency is owned by the government and is responsible for strengthening the UK’s position in the space sector (领域).
Although some space junk is very small, only around 1 cm, it could do a lot of damage and even completely destroy a spacecraft if there was a high-speed collision. It is hoped that the new research can create something like an automated traffic management system in the future, which will keep functioning satellites out of harm’s way.
Jacob Geer from UKSA said, “Space tracking is one of the key things we can do to keep safe those satellites we rely on now, and to make sure certain orbits don’t become obstructed for future generations because there is too much junk in them.”
The Ministry of Defence and UKSA recently agreed to work together when it comes to space, with both having valuable satellites in orbit that they want to protect.
The UK government is now part-owner of the OneWeb satellite broadband company, which has launched 74 satellites and has plans to put up thousands more.
28. Why has UKSAgiven a large amount of money to some companies?
A. To explore space. B. To help the seven companies.
C. To spot new objects in space. D. To keep track of satellites and space junk.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. There is an urgent need to clear up the orbit in space.
B. Satellites may crash into each other if left unconcerned.
C. More and more satellites should be launched into space.
D. There has been better ways to solve problems concerning space.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “obstructed” in paragraph 6?
A. Incredible. B. Impossible. C. Inaccessible. D. Unavoidable.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. UKSA has launched more satellites.
B. UKSA has detected too much junk in space.
C. UKSA has found better ways to monitor space.
D. UKSA has offered financial support to protect satellites.
D
The days of staring at the computer screen pretending to be interested in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That’s because if Dr Harry Witchel at England’s Brighton and Sussex Medical School, has his way, computers of the future will be able to detect boredom and even react to it real-time (实时的).
But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just following the constant involuntary (无意识的) movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but barely noticeable movements like scratching or stretching. Witchel says the level of movement is directly linked to how absorbed the person is in what he or she is reading. The higher the interest
level, the less the movement!
To test the theory, Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to various digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the banking regulations that most people would find boring.
A video motion tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had expected, the involuntary actions decreased dramatically, by as much as 42%, when the participants were totally absorbed in what they were reading.
Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that combining the motion detecting technology with future computers will help enhance the digital learning experience.
The scientists say that being able to measure the students’ interest level will enable educators to adjust the materials real-time and re-engage the students.
32. According to Dr Harry, what will future computers be able to do?
A. Keep a learner from distraction. B. Help a learner with his assignments.
C. Read a learner’s mind exactly real-time. D. Identify dullness of a learner and respond to it.
33. How does an absorbed learner tend to behave?
A. Laugh and shout excitedly. B. Use less energy in an assignment.
C. Perform fewer involuntary actions. D. Show noticeable movements constantly.
34. What is the value of this technology for educators?
A. Bettering their digital learning experience.
B. Introducing more computers into class.
C. Finding the absent-minded students in class.
D. Detecting what interests the students most.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce an upcoming technology.
B. To update educators’ teaching concept.
C. To show what learning will be like in the future.
D. To explain how life will be shaped by technology.

The old man turned away sadly as his eyes were filled with tears. “Poor Mr. Dev,” thought Indra sympathetically. Another day went past and there was still no sign of his family. Indra wondered how children could be so heartless as to abandon a parent like this.
Indra recalled the day the old man was admitted to her ward. He was thin and weak. He could not provide his identity card but he could remember the number. The hospital tried to contact his family using the phone number he gave them but it was in vain. He was treated for a lung infection and was now recovering. Soon, it would be time for him to be discharged. Where would he go then? He did not look strong enough to look after himself. Indra threw down the file she was holding as anger rose within her.
“What’s the matter?” asked Poh, Indra’s colleague.
“I’m just upset about old Mr. Dev,” she replied. Poh nodded with understanding. She had been a nurse much longer than Indra. She had seen many cases of abandoned old people and she had learned to control her feelings.
“Don’t worry too much, the hospital will contact the welfare department. Mr. Dev will be placed in an old folks’ home,” Poh said and patted Indra’s arm comfortingly.
Indra sighed. “I know. It’s just that the old chap really longs for his family to visit him. He cleans and tidies himself every morning and sits up to wait expectantly. You can see the eagerness in his eyes whenever the door opens. At the end of the day, he goes to sleep with tears in his eyes. It makes me cry inside.”
Poh shook her head sadly. “He needs a miracle.”
Two days later, the doctor confirmed that Mr. Dev was fit enough to be discharged and that the welfare officer would come to take Mr. Dev to an old folks’ home.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右(两段词数须大致均衡);

Text 1
M: Are you waiting for a bus, Claire?
W: Yeah, I've been here for 40 minutes. I should have just taken the subway to downtown.
M: Hop in. I'll give you a ride.
W: Really? Thanks.
Text 2
W: Can't I tempt you with more food?
M: Oh, Mrs. Black, your cooking is amazing. I definitely could eat more, but if I had one more steak, I would have to run at least 3 miles to burn the extra calories.
Text3
M: Why don't you buy this fashionable dress for the party, Jackie? It's on sale.
W: But it's a backless dress! I don't want to be laughed at by others. I just need a modest one.
Text 4
M: Susan, it's me. We'll meet at the north gate of the department store at 7:30 p.m., right?
W: Sorry, Frank, I need to work overtime for about half an hour. Can we meet one hour later than scheduled?
M: Sure.
Text 5
M: So this Guernica painted by Pablo Picasso, why do you like it?
W: Well, it's about the Spanish Civil War, showing a bombing attack on a town. I like it because it really makes you think about what happened on that day.
Text 6
M: The Jasmine Hotel seems pretty ideal. It provides a full English breakfast and is not too far away from the beach.
W: Yeah, but I have already contacted their receptionist, and she said there's no double room available in the next three days.
M: That's too bad. How about this Blue Mountain Hotel? It's a five-star hotel.

M: They're not very good for you, are they? I usually eat a lot of salad for lunch. It's healthy. And I drink lots of water. It's better than juice.
W: I don't like salad very much, and I don't like water. And I think tea and coffee taste horrible. I prefer lemonade. And I love sweets too. But I don't like ice cream very much. It brings a pain in my teeth.

W: Our hotel was only a short distance from the beach. The beach itself, which was small, was not good enough for swimming. However, the boats at the harbor were brightly painted and they were really beautiful. The home-cooked food was fresh and absolutely delicious.
M: You're making me hungry!
W: We also explored the whole island, which was full of honey-colored buildings. The capital city, Valletta, has a lot of beautiful churches. We got lost a couple of times, but the friendly locals helped us.
M: Mmm . .. that was nice! I think I'll go there next summer.
W: Well, if you do, you must visit the small island of Gozo.

M: Robert is also interested in little mice. What about buying him a mouse?
W: No, it's impossible. Don't you know that our sister Cathy has just got a pet cat?
M: Then why don't you buy him a rabbit?
W: But I think rabbits are smelly. What about a goldfish? They're very beautiful and easy to look after.
M: No, boys don't usually love goldfish. I suggest you buy him a snake. It's very unusual. I'm fond of that.
W: No, I don't think it's a good idea. You know, I'm terribly afraid of snakes.
M: I've got a good idea. Let's ask him and find out what he really likes and then we can go to the market to get one for him.
W: That sounds OK.
Text 10
W: Welcome to Student Life! Today we're going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school. Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourages them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience. However, it's important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project. Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project. OK? Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants, Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills! And don't forget, you should make sure that students are guided by a teacher so that they take their responsibilities seriously. A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it's important to get opinions from the students about the project, to find out which jobs are successful and which don't go so well.
A
C 22. B 23. B
根据第三段中的“Diving is not popular with British people. The difficulties of wild waters are greater because the water is colder and not clear enough”(英国人不喜欢潜水。

根据第三段“He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic(疫情). He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.(他让孩子们给他发照片,展示他们在疫情期间的感受。他收到了来自140个国家的孩子们的作品。)”及第四段“Using the children's ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint in a huge dancing room in a fancy hotel. (以孩子们的想法为出发点,贾夫里开始在一家豪华酒店的一间巨大的舞蹈室里作画。)”可知,Sacha Jafri 从孩子们的画中获得了创作的灵感。故选B项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第四段“It took Mr. Jafri seven months to create the painting. He worked long hours every day—often up to 20 hours a day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1,000 paintbrushes and 6,300 liters of paint to create the painting.(贾夫里花了七个月的时间创作这幅画。他每天工作很长时间——经常高达20小时。他画画时弯下腰太久,弄伤了后背。这幅画用了1000多支画笔和6300升颜料。)”可知,为了创作巨型画,艺术家Sacha Jafii付出了很多。故选B项。
26. 推理判断题。根据第五段的内容“Mr. Jafri hoped that his painting, called "The Journey of Humanity", would help bring the world together during a difficult time. Since Mr. Jafri's goal was to raise money to help children suffering from the pandemic, the painting was split up into 70 large parts. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the parts separately, he could raise $30 million.(贾夫里希望他的这幅名为《人性之旅》的画能帮助世界在这一艰难时期团结在一起。由于贾夫里的目标是筹集资金帮助受疫情影响的儿童,这幅画被分成了70大块。贾夫里希望,通过单独出售这些部件,他可以筹集3000万美元。)”可推断,Sacha Jafn 创作巨
型画是为了帮助人们团结起来共同抗击疫情。故选A项。
根据最后一段“But when the auction(拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. A French businessman bought all the pieces. Knowing that the money would go to charity also motivated him to decide to pay more. He says he was poor when he grew up, so he's glad to be helping children around the world by buying the painting.(但当拍卖于3月22日结束时,贾夫里的表现要好得多。

Soon after, Indra was informed that the welfare officer was waiting in the hospital lobby. With a heavy heart, Indra helped Mr. Dev to get ready. He was still a bit weak, so she put him in a wheelchair to take him down to the lobby. Her eyes were misty when she saw how sad the old man looked as they got into the lift. Indra wanted to comfort him, but she couldn’t even utter a word. A moment later, the lift doors opened at the ground level.
Indra was pushing the wheelchair out of the lift when a woman’s voice cried out ‘Papa!’. And then a middle-aged woman rushed forward and embraced the old man in the wheelchair. Both of them began to weep. At the sight of this, Indra smiled through her tears. It was the miracle that she had prayed for. Indra left the scene of the reunion quietly and went to look for the welfare officer. She was eager to tell him the ‘bad’ news that his trip to collect Mr. Dev was a wasted one.
