I like t believe that sme things in life never change. A cnstant, ever since I culd hld a pen, has been the rutine at lunch with my grandfather. My grandmther will ask me hw the walk was frm my parents’ huse befre I take a seat at their kitchen table.
Sitting in his usual spt in the crner is my grandfather. He lks up fr a quick “hell” befre heading back dwn t the crsswrd puzzle in frnt f him.
“S, hw is this ne cming alng?” I’ll ask. With a failed laugh, he’ll slide the crsswrd tward me. Carefully cut and neatly flded frm his newspaper, three- quarters f it will already have been finished. Many f the clues are far t advanced fr me t figure ut. Hwever, I’m happy t help with the strange clue related t sprts—my expert knwledge—that still remain.
Even if I’m certain f an answer, I fill in the squares with a pencil, as clues are always checked thrughly by my grandfather. In the rare event that we’re unable t finish the crsswrd by the end f lunch, he’ll call me later that evening t g ver the clues he later slved.
Tday, lunch unflds in its usual manner. Hwever, large parts f the puzzle are blanks “Grandfather, I think this is 49-dwn... and this, 52-acrss,” I say.
“Oh, right. Yes, put that dwn there,” he replies.
I reach acrss the table t hand him the crsswrd. Lking at him as he searches fr answers, suddenly I feel smething different. I nte his hair is whiter than I remembered. Fr the first time I think abut my grandfather as, well, a grandfather.
But life is abut change—change we aren’t always prepared fr. Just as we are n different ends f life, we find urselves n different ends f the city nw t. But at lunch, when we take up ur pens and pen the crsswrd, the wrld stands pleasantly still. Nw,instead f an exercise f quick wit(机智),ur crsswrds are abut patience and understanding. As clues are slwly understd, s are the truths in life.
24. What is the grandfather usually ding when the authr visits him?
A. He is preparing lunch happily as a rutine.

When making chices, peple assume that they pick what they like. Hwever, research suggests that we like smething strictly because we have chsen it. In ther wrds, we dislike things we dn’t chse. And this phenmenn has existed since we were babies.
In an experiment, US researchers brught several 10 t 20-mnth-ld babies int a lab and gave them tw same bright and clrful sft blcks t play with. They set each blck far apart, s the babies had t crawl t ne r the ther—a randm chice. After the baby chse ne f the tys, the researchers tk it away and came back with a new ptin. The babies culd then pick either the ty they didn’t play with befre, r a brand-new ty.
It turned ut that the babies reliably chse t play with the new ty rather than the ne they had nt chsen.
In fllw-up experiments, when researchers instead helped chse which ty the baby wuld play with, the phenmenn disappeared. “As if they were saying, ‘Hmm, I didn’t chse that bject last time, because I guess I didn’t like it very much” said Lisa Feigensn, c-authr f the study.
This is a very imprtant phenmenn in life, Feigensn nted. Adults will less like the thing they didn’t chse, even if they had n real preference in the first place. It lks like babies d just the same.
It shws that the act f making chices changes hw we feel abut ur ptins. The randm chices might becme ur preferences. “They are really nt chsing based n whether they are nvel r what they prefer,” said Alex Silver, c-authr f the study.
This new finding explains why adults build uncnscius preference when they make chices between the same things. Justifying(证明有道理) chice is smehw fundamental t the human experience. “I chse this, s I must like it. I didn’t chse this ther thing, s it cannt be s gd. Adults make these inferences uncnsciusly,” Feigensn said.
Such tendency makes sense t us as we live in a cnsumer culture and must make s many chices every day, between everything frm tthpaste brands t styles f jeans.
Next, researchers will lk at whether t many chices culd be a prblem fr babies as they certainly are fr adults.
28. What is the purpse f the experiments?
A. T test whether peple chse what they like.
B. T see why babies prefer new tys t ld nes.
C. T explain hw babies and adults make chices differently.
D. T study if t many chices culd create prblems fr peple.
29. What can be learned frm the experiments?
A. Babies prefer bright and clrful tys.
B. Babies’ preference largely affects their chices.
C. Babies prefer adults t help them make chices.
D. Babies’ previus randm chices affect their preference.
30. Why is the new finding imprtant in life?
A. It entirely changes ur styles t chse.
B. It helps us make wise decisins in a cnsumer culture.
C. It prmtes the relatinship between adults and babies.
D. It helps us understand ur uncnscius preference fr chices.
31. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Babies like what they chseB. Randm chices matter
C. T many chices puzzle the adultsD. Preference affects the chice

The argument that human-caused carbn emissins are merely a drp in the bucket cmpared t greenhuse gases generated by vlcanes has been making its way arund the rumr mill fr years. And while it seems t be reasnable, the science just desn’t back it up.
Accrding t the US Gelgical Survey (USGS), the wrld’s vlcanes, bth n land and undersea, generate abut 200 millin tns f carbn dixide annually, while ur autmtive and industrial activities cause sme 24 billin tns f CO2 emissins every year wrldwide. Despite the arguments t the cntrary, the facts speak fr themselves: Greenhuse gas emissins frm vlcanes cmpse less than ne percent f thse generated by tday’s human activities.
Anther indicatin that human emissins surpass thse f vlcanes is the fact that atmspheric CO2 levels, as measured by sampling statins arund the wrld, have gne up cnsistently year after year regardless f whether r nt there have been majr vlcanic eruptins in specific years. “If it were true that individual vlcanic eruptins dminated human emissins and were causing the rise in carbn dixide cncentratins, then these carbn dixide recrds wuld be full f spikes—ne fr each eruptin,” says Cby Beck, a jurnalist writing fr nline envirnmental news. “Instead, such recrds shw a smth and regular trend.”
Furthermre, sme scientists believe that vlcanic eruptins, like that f Mt. St. Helens in 1980 and Mt. Pinatub in 1991, actually lead t shrt-term glbal cling, nt warming, as sulfur dixide (SO2), ash and ther particles in the air and stratsphere reflect sme slar energy instead f letting it int Earth’s atmsphere.
Scientists tracking the effects f the majr 1991 eruptin f the Philippines’ Mt. Pinatub fund that the verall effect f the blast was t cl the surface f the Earth glbally by sme 0.5 degrees Celsius a year later.
In an interesting twist n the issue, vlcanic activity may be cntributing t the melting f ice caps in Antarctica but nt because f any emissins, natural r man-made. Instead, scientists Hugh Crr and David Vaughan f the British Antarctic Survey believe that vlcanes underneath Antarctica may be melting the cntinent’s ice sheets frm belw, just as warming air temperatures frm human-induced emissins erde them frm abve.
32. Accrding t Paragraph 1, sme peple argue that .
A. their pinin is supprted by science
B. vlcanes generate mst f the greenhuse gases
C. human activities are t blame fr greenhuse gases
D. carbn emissins prduced by vlcanes are increasing
33. What des the underlined wrd “spikes” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Sudden increases. B. Smth trends.C. Stable regularities. D. Sharp declines.
34. Accrding t this passage, what d the scientists believe abut vlcanic eruptins?
A. They brught abut glbal warming.
B. They actually partly cled the surface f the Earth.
C. They melted the ice sheets in Antarctic frm abve.
D. They dminated human emissins in greenhuse effect.
35. The purpse f the passage is t .
A. cmpare the results f the studies
B. cntradict a view held by sme peple
C. present new findings fr greenhuse phenmenn
D. reprt the effects f CO2 in greenhuse phenmenn

M: We thank everyne wh is interested in establishing a student assciatin at the university. There are sme imprtant things, including changes t the rules and fees. Firstly, yu all knw that anybdy culd start a club r assciatin previusly. Hwever, starting frm this year, yu must have successfully cmpleted at least ne year f studies and have nt been a student fr mre than 4 years. The reasn is that we want all ur students t fcus n their studies, and nt get disturbed by utside activities. Hwever, jining student clubs is a great way t learn career skills like rganizatin and leadership. Secndly, the university administratin will n lnger prvide every new rganizatin with $1500. Instead, the starting capital will be $10 per new member, up t $2000. It desn’t matter if yu have mre than 200 members in yur new club. These are the majr changes, and we are cnfident that they will imprve student life and help ambitius yung students be active n campus. Persnally, I have a lng histry at the University f Tuscalsa, first as a student nw as a prfessr. Thrughut the time, I have been always invlved in clubs and assciatins here, bth fr students and staff. S, I understand their value. If yu have any further questins, please take a lk at the brchure r meet me at my ffice tnight at 6 p.m., where I will be answering questins persnally.
