As the Labor Day public holiday starts this year, a new rule is announced: Chinese tour guides have the right to report poorly-behaved tourists to the local government. When tour guides discover some bad behaviors or ill manners such as acting rudely on public transport, damaging(破坏)private or public property or disrespecting local customs, they can take photos or videos and send them to the local government with the tourists' personal information.
Before the outbreak of COVID-19, the number of Chinese tourists who chose to travel abroad kept increasing rapidly each year. However, quite a few Chinese tourists continued to take bad habits with them. From damaging ancient Egyptian temples to letting children defecate(排便)in the middle of airports, some negative news about Chinese tourists was often seen on the Internet. In order to protect and improve China's image(形象)abroad,Chinese Vice-Premier WangYang even stressed the need for Chinese tourists to behave better while traveling overseas so as to protect China's image abroad.
Now, Chinese travelers should have no excuse for rude behavior. Chinese tourists are asked not to take life vest away from airplanes when flying. Besides, Chinese tourists are expected not to disturb(打 扰) others or fight with others when they want to take pictures at tourist attractions. Chinese tourists are also encouraged to dress properly and respect local customs wherever they travel.

badly on their foreign trips. They should be given some time to change.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means (工具).Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. Among various(各种各样的) kinds of problems, the most serious one is the pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people there are on the earth, the more pollution there will be. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
There are different kinds of pollution that keeps threatening(威胁) our life every day. For example, the water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water and the noise pollution makes us angry more easily. And it's generally believed that the air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world. Quite a few things may cause the air pollution and the main reasons are as follows. People burn coals(煤块)as fuels(燃料),which does great harm to the air. What's more, some factories keep producing black smoke into the sky and pollute the air condition. In order to solve the problem of the air pollution, many countries are making rules and people are advised to stop burning coals in houses or factories in the city, and putting dirty smoke into the air. To make matters worse, if more and more people drive their own private cars, the most dangerous kind of air pollution called by sulfur dioxide(SO2) will be more. The heavier the traffic is, the more polluted the air will be. We are sure that people are expected to drive their private cars less so that there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it, which means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must pay attention to the rise in pollution at the same time.

Yearbooks in the High School
Most high schools publish(发行)a yearbook once a year, usually in spring. It is a record of the school year-a “book of memories" for the students.
Inside a yearbook is each student's photo. The seniors(高年级学生)are graduating soon, and their photos appear first. Then come the second-year students. The last photos are the first-year students. The yearbook is not only about students. The teachers have photos, too.
The yearbook also has photos and descriptions(描述)of after-school activities. These are activities that students do after school, such as the chess club and art club. There is even a yearbook club. Students in this club write, design and take photos all year for the yearbook.
The most interesting part in the yearbook is that some students receive special titles. The seniors vote(投票)and choose the “class clown”(a funny student), the “most likely to succeed”(a student who got the best grades) , and the “best dressed”( a student with a good fashion sense). There are also other awards, and they bring happy moments to students.
Besides, students usually sign each other's yearbooks. They write sweet notes to each other, such as, “We had a lot of fun,” or “I'll never forget you. ” This is especially important for the seniors because they are graduating. Confucius' Life and Thought
Confucius(551-479 B. C. ) was a great thinker and teacher in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Lu( part of Shandong). He acted as an official( 官 员)there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important for a healthy society. However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty(156-87 B. C. ) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius' teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues(美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius' thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren(kindness, charity),yi(fairness),li(ceremony, tradition),zhi(knowledge), and xin(trust).Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, obeying(服从)and taking care of one's parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society.
Here's one of Confucius' famous sayings, "Do not do to others as you do not wish to be done to you.”Another saying of his is “In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher.”

There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father's Day. Moms have Mother's Day. But do our grandparents have a special festival? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect(尊敬)to their grandparents. Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have much knowledge and experience that young people can learn. There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone should stand up. Also, people are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. And young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
In Western countries, however, older people have different lifestyles from those in China. Western seniors don't often live with their children-they live alone. They'd rather do everything themselves than get help from others. They even don't want to be offered seats by others. Besides, after retirement(退休),they would like to take up new hobbies, do part-time jobs and join in different kinds of activities. Westerners still respect their older people. For holidays, families usually get together at the grandparents' homes, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.

No one can believe that the over-6,300-kilometer Great Wall might disappear someday. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.
The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals(畜栏)and pigsties(猪圈). Some were taken away to build roads. The local farmers dug out the entire base. However, most of them are not clear about the cultural meaning of the Great Wall.
As Chinese, we should keep in mind that the Great Wall is an important part in Chinese culture and it is of everyone's duty to take action to protect it.

In China there are around 130 different languages in different cities and lots of dialects(方言). These dialects come from about eight different language groups. Each group is quite different. For example,a Mandarin(普通话) speaker in northern China would probably understand very little Cantonese (粤语).
Dialects are necessary parts of history. Sheng Guangqi, a teacher at Shandong University, says, “We can learn about the history of a place by looking at its dialect. ” For example, in Shanxi, there are still many people who call matches “qu deng”, which means “get a light”. In the old days, “qu deng” was a piece of small wood with some powder on it. People used it to make fire.
Sheng thinks that dialects are also important for us to know about the culture. They are as important as Mandarin. “Mandarin is useful in many formal(正式的) situations. But in some art performances, such as local operas and short plays, dialects play an important role,” he said.
Although it is necessary to protect dialects, Zhang Haoming, an expert from the Ministry of Education, said making Mandarin popular is still the most important thing.
“We will further promote(推广)Mandarin. At the same time, we will also protect disappearing
languages and the cultural meaning behind these languages,” he said.

On the rainy afternoon of May,22nd, the streets of Changsha saw people gathering in sadness. With teary eyes, thousands of people were standing along both sides of the road, holding white flowers in their hands, waiting to say goodbye to Dr. Yuan Longping, for the last time.
As the car carrying Dr. Yuan's body came near, they cried together, again and again. “Farewell, Grandpa Yuan!”
So, why do most Chinese people respect Dr. Yuan?
Born in 1930, Dr. Yuan experienced the great famine(饥荒) in 1942. The terrible memories made him realize China is a country with too many people and too little farmland. That's why Dr. Yuan told himself he should do something to make a change. Now with his new hybrid rice, the same amount of farmland produces 30% more. In 1950, the farmer of China produced only 50 million tons of rice. In 2020,however, over 208 million tons of rice was produced. Thanks; to all the things he did, China feeds 22% of the world's people with just 7% of the world's farmland.
Even though he achieved great success, Dr. Yuan refused many interviews by big newspapers and TV stations. He once said,“ I don't want to be cheered by thousands of fans like a popular star, because it gives me less freedom to do my research. I just want to live a simple and normal life.”Moreover, he said no to a big villa(别墅)the government built for him and a 2-million-yuan prize offered by companies. In fact, he believed that having too much would give him lots of troubles.
Dr. Yuan once said he had two dreams. One is to enjoy the cool under the rice crops taller than men. The other is to see hybrid rice grow all over the world. After Dr. Yuan's death, many people wrote comments(评论) on the Internet to remember the great man. They not only expressed their feelings, but also shared their future plans influenced by Dr. Yuan's stories. It seems that the great man has already passed the seed(种子) of rice to the hands of every Chinese.
