Speed reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim(略读)over articles,e-mails and WeChat to try to grasp key words and the meaning of the text. But a new trend(趋势) calls on people to enjoy reading slowly.
Slow readers, such as The Atlantic's, Maura Kelly says,“ A regular reading habit improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to empathize.” For example, a study of 300 elderly people showed that adults who take part in activities that use their brain, such as slow reading, have less memory loss as they get older.
Another example is a story reported on a new book club in New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smartphones. They sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn't changing ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxing environment. By doing so, most of the readers in the club can find the inner peace and become less stressed, which helps them enjoy a better relationship with their family and friends.
Technology makes our reading more convenient. However, it also brings some problems. Reading texts online that has many links(链接)to other websites leads to weaker understanding than reading plain text(纯文本).“The Internet may have made us stupider,” says Patrick Kingsley from the Guardian.“Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting much interesting news, but we are also gradually forgetting how to think carefully and connect all these facts to each other. What's more, spending too much time reading online makes it difficult for us to get the hidden meaning behind the words.”
Slow reading means coming back to a traditional way to read books line by line, word by word. “Whenever you want to check your favorite site for something to pass the time-you pick up a meaningful work of literature(文学),”advises Kelly.
56. According to Maura Kelly, the slow reading habit can help us
A. get key words rapidly B. improve concentration
C. collect interesting news D. avoid memory loss completely

A. helps us think deeply about facts we got

If you're feeling hungry, what's the easiest way to satisfy your hunger? Many people will take out their phones, reach for a takeaway(外卖) menu and order some delicious but possibly unhealthy food. And our very busy lives add to our need to buy ready-made food.
Eating options are endless, and new technology means we can get what we want at the push of a button. Takeaway delivery(配送)apps make ordering food quick and convenient, and during the COVID-19 outbreak, it provided a lifeline for those stuck at home with nothing to cook or those who don't have the skills to prepare a meal for themselves. It's reported that in the UK alone, people eat three million takeaway meals a day, and the three biggest delivery apps together offer a choice of 100 dishes from 60,000 restaurants. Amelia Brophy, head of UK Data Products at YouGor, told the BBC that its research suggests that the number of takeaways ordered is expected to increase in the future. It's no wonder that we would like to have something that someone else has prepared rather than cook the meal by ourselves.
Eating too much unhealthy fast food will result in putting on more weight and increasing the risk of developing other illnesses. A few years ago, the BBC Good Food Nation Survey found that most people ate fast food twice a week. But, in the age group of 16 -20, one in six ate fast food at least twice a day.
Of course, reducing salt, sugar and fat is one way to make takeaway food healthier. But the best advice you might want to take is to find a recipe book(食谱) and try making your own nutritious meal. And if you haven't got time, try ordering a healthier dish from the menu.
44. What do many people probably do when they feel hungry?
A. They cook healthy food they like.
B. They go to the restaurant to have a big meal.
C. They order some delicious food on the phone.
D. They go to their friends' to take away some food.
45. What may Amelia Brophy mostly agree with?
A. Takeaways during the COVID-19 were all very unhealthy.
B. None of us would like to cook by ourselves at home.
C. The number of takeaways is going to drop in the future.
D. More and more people will order takeaways in the future.
46. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. You'd better cook healthy meals by yourselves.
B. It's impossible for takeaway food to be healthy.
C. Even if you are busy, you should still cook at home.
D. Much salt, sugar and fat is good for our health.
47. The material is probably from__________.
A. a dictionary
B. a health magazine
C. a letter
D. an ad.

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center, China had 989 million Internet users, among which about 21 percent were students. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children's eyesight and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization.
Protecting younger students' eyesight and making sure they pay more attention to their studies are common worries among parents, teachers and schools, which means some rules to limit(限制)students' mobile phone use in schools are badly needed.
According to a notice from the Ministry of Education in January, primary and middle school students should be stopped from carrying mobile phones to school. Those who still require their phones for some reason must get their parents' and teachers' agreement and must hand in their phones during class time.
The government of Beijing has already taken action to ask all local primary and middle schools to include rules about smartphone use in school management, including making it clear where, how and who will take care of the phones for students who have received agreement to bring them.
That's why many schools have already limited students' phone use in schools. For example, every classroom in Beijing No.20 High School has a special box to store students' phones during class, and the teacher checks the phones every day.
Li Jisen, an 18-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School, agrees with the new rule. He believes that the rules of phone use at school will help the students pay attention to their study.
However, Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it's more important to teach kids how to manage themselves and develop good habits of phone usage.

I still remember that was a sunny Sunday afternoon when I stopped at a teahouse to enjoy a cup of tea. Suddenly, I felt a hand on the back of my jacket and heard someone say,“ Hi, David! How are you doing?” Looking back, I saw a man, who looked kind of familiar. However, I couldn't remember where we had met before. The young man also held a cup of tea, so I asked him to join me. Very soon, his story began to evoke my memory.
His name is Peter, a boy I met on a cold night. After taking a piano lesson, Peter was driving to Texas to join in a friend's birthday party. A heavy snow had arrived that afternoon, and by midnight, the snowdrifts(雪堆) were getting deep. His car was stuck in a snowdrift just down the road from my house.
He walked to my house for help. I helped him pull his car out of the snowdrift and up to the street where the snow had been cleaned away. This was a normal happening here during the winter. I couldn't count the times someone had helped me to pull my car from a snowdrift. However, it was an unforgettable experience for him because he was only eighteen at that time, and he said he was very afraid at that time. After all, no one wanted to be stuck in a snowdrift at night.

Perhaps fashion makes you into “sheep”, which means it makes you run after others without looking for the one fitting us. However, it is hardly known that clothes designers study what ordinary people wear on the street. Therefore, fashion really starts with individual(个人的)finding a new look. Then a company uses that look and then it becomes fashionable!
The same goes for electronic things. It seems that you will get out of fashion unless you get the latest phone or computer. So whenever a new electronic product comes out, thousands of people will go out of their ways to get it without considering the price. The reason for that is maybe that they take it as a way to show off or a chance to discuss the new function(功能) with others. However, have you ever thought about it is really necessary to buy a similar one with a function that you may not need? Besides, anything new can be replaced by the next new one, which means you can't keep up with fashion all the time and there is no need to follow the fashion.
The word fashion is generally used to mean style in clothing, which makes people handsome and cool. However, in my opinion, fashion can be something special and valuable, from which we can be different from others, such as valuable personal qualities and characters. Beautiful clothes will change from time to time. But the quality of positivity, bravery and persistence(坚持)never changes.

Memory likes to play tricks on us, taking us to places we once loved, but haven't seen in years.
It was early morning, raining and cold. Something woke me up. Two little feet bounced(蹦跳) down the stairs. It was my 7-year-old grandson Henry on his way to the kitchen to “cook breakfast”. I suddenly thought about cookies and my grandma baking in her stove(火炉).
We'd cover the cookies with butter(黄油) and top them with jam that we made with blackberries (黑莓)that I picked myself. That's what life was like when I visited my grandmother on her farm-picking blackberries, milking cows, eating cookies, running after the ducks...What more could a child ever want? I loved it, especially those cookies.
I got out of bed, feeling like it wasn't raining at all, and went downstairs to hug my grandchild and bake some cookies. They weren't great cookies. But they were good enough. We covered them with butter and jam. Henry ate two and kept eyeing mine until I gave him half. Maybe someday he'll say they were the best cookies ever.
The memories we leave with our children and grandchildren and all of our loved ones-like the cookies we bake and the stories that will be told about us long after we are gone-are never made with perfection(完美).

Humans always take things from nature. Probably we should think twice before doing that. The Aral Sea(咸海) is in central Asia. In the first half of the 20th century, the Aral Sea once was the world's fourth largest lake, with an area of 67 ,300 square kilometers. During that time, the Aral Sea produced about 20,000 to 40,000 tons of fish a year, and was a wonderful place to live in. However, by 2020, over 90% of it has dried up. The Aral Sea's drying off has become one of the worst environmental disasters(灾难).
Why did the Aral Sea dry off? The Aral Sea only receives water from two rivers, Amu Darya(阿姆河)and Syr Darya(锡尔河).The government began to grow cotton in the 1960s. Cotton farmers used most of the water from the two rivers. Also, more people live near the Aral Sea than before. They take water from it. The Aral Sea loses more water.
How bad can it be? Aral Sea is getting smaller, so the area becomes a desert. The Aral Sea becomes very salty. The water is unfit for both wildlife and humans. The fishing industry there is almost destroyed. What's more, dust storms come from the dry seabed. They hurt crops and make people sick. The environment is greatly damaged(损害).

Do you know that in the US almost half of all kids aged 6 to 13 are home alone for part of the day? These days, even a lot of adults are seared to be alone in the house! It's totally understandable if you or someone you know are nervous about being home alone.
Take Jessie and her brother Joey as an example. For over five years now, they've been taking care of themselves until their mum comes home from work. Jessie says that the worst thing about it is when she or her brother is locked out. Sometimes, both of them get locked out! Fortunately, they each have a cell phone so they can call their mum when that happens.
As for being home alone, your parents think you're ready, but do you? At first it sounds cool to be home alone, right? Think of the freedom you'd have around the house! There's nobody to stop you from playing video games or watching your favorite TV show!
So there you are alone at home, listening to that CD your parents hate. Then what's that? You hear a noise outside. It sounds like it could be a person on the front doorstep, and there's been a number of robberies(盗窃)in the area lately. Suddenly, your unsupervised freedom doesn’t make you feel so safe anymore.
If you have worries about being home alone, it's really important to speak out about them, even though it may cost money to get a sitter or your parent has to change his or her work plan.

These days, many pictures of Chinese students wearing winged-hats have been posted online. They use the hats to keep the distance when they return to school. Many people say the hats look like those worn during the Song Dynasty. But why did Song Dynasty officials wear hats that has two "wings"?
Ii is true that in the Song Dynasty , officials wore hats that had two long straight wings. According to one legend(传说) , the hats were designed by Zhao Kuangyin, the first emperor of the dynasty.
One day, when listening to a minister's report, Zhao noticed that many ministers were whispering (耳语) to each other and not respecting court's(朝廷的 ) rules. Zhao came up with a practical solution. He required that wings should be added to the ministers' hats.
Using a metal plate and bamboo strips as the frame, the "wings" prevented the ministers from
talking to others sitting beside them. Since then, the court order had been kept.
Although the story is recorded in a book from the Yuan Dynasty ( 1271-1368) , some historians think the story may not be true. White Bear( Poland)
I think there should be swimming lessons for kids. It is a lifesaving skill. In Poland, swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. And I will start to learn swimming next term.
Mister Panda ( France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory( dating back to Charlemagne) , I even got my lifesaving certificate in school !

As a boy born in a rural area, I learnt swimming in a river near my home when I was 7 or 8 years old. I used to play in the river with boys of my same age every summer, and we enjoyed it so much! I think it's a good idea for schools to teach students to swim. But in fact, not every school in China has the conditions to do that. In some less-developed areas, there is not even a swimming pool for a whole county with a population of half a million people.
Boilermaker 21(Expat in China)

Most of us feel younger or older than we really are. This "subjective age" is simply based on the way we feel inside. Scientists find that "subjective age" is the key to understanding why some people appear to be energetic an they age-while others do not. What's more, studies have shown that you really are only as old as you feel in some real ways.
One interesting study has discovered our subjective age is connected with our personality. It is now well-accepted that people tend to become less open to new experiences while ageing. However, such personality changes are less pronounced in people with a younger heart and more noticeable in people with elder adjective ages. Moreover, people with younger subjective ages become more careful and make fewer mistakes. Bat the connection between health and subjective age almost certainly acts in both directions. If you often feel upset, you are likely to feel older. The result could be a vicious cycle(恶性循环).In this way, the effect of subjective age on health is stronger than that of actual age.
When do we start to feel that our minds and bodies are running on different timescales? And why does it happen? One study finds that most children and teenagers feel older than they really are. But this changes at around 26, when 70% of them would feel younger. Some researchers argue that a lower subjective age is a form of self-defense. Believing “I may be 65 but I only feel 50" would mean you are less worried about your performance at work, for example. This thinking helps people free themselves from the society's sad view of ageing.
With these findings, it is possible that in the future, science might be able to reduce people's subjective age and improve their health as a result.

55. Which of the following is TURE according to the passage?

Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said,“ The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are. ”This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but not for the British. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative(消极的).
British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy. BBC's The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show's comedy comes from his delusions(错觉的).For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone, but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.
Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly poor person.
This side of British humor is reflected(反映)in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm(挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
This way-laughing at everything-may sound rather depressing(沮丧),but our strange humor played a big part in British history. There is a saying in English:“ ▲ ,"If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it's best to just laugh it off!
56. Which of the following can be put in the________ ?
A. Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone
B. It never rains, it pours
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed
D. Don't trouble trouble till trouble troubles you
57. How is British comedy different from other types?
A. It is often meaningless and boring.
B. It often laughs at human nature.
C. It is often about negative things.
D. It often makes people feel upset.
58.How does the writer advise people to react(反应)to British humor?
A. Learn from it.
B. Don't take it seriously.
C. Reply angrily.
D. Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.

Lucy Walker, an 18-year-old girl, German
I won a national award(奖章)for the work I did on project to build an environmental centre. The centre is made out of 100% green materials, which means all materials were reused or recycled. The centre is somewhere kids can learn how to protect the environment. Then I realized that not everyone would have the chance to visit it. I therefore created an online guide program for kids to learn about the centre in their schools. I translated it into English as well so that it could be available to more people. All this took me two years. And I did it because I have a great love for the outdoors and being in the middle of wildlife. I expected other young people to be able to experience the same feeling as me.

So we set up a project at the local primary school to encourage kids to plant trees. We taught the kids the importance of taking care of the environment and how trees can help. Each of the pupils was given two young trees; One to take home and plant in their garden, and one to give to a neighbor or a friend. A sign was put on each tree, saying the name of the project. Nowadays heavy traffic can happen anywhere. People can get very anxious if they are in heavy traffic. For many years people have tried to invent a car that can fly. If a person is driving a flying car, the heavy traffic would be far below him.
Many companies around the world are developing flying cars. They hope that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxis in or out of cities. These cars could save time in emergencies (突发事件) and help reach places that can't be reached by road. They also hope to save the space on the ground. Flying cars won't use runways, because they are able to take off and land by going straight up and straight down.
Last September, Sky Drive, a Japanese company, showed off its new flying car SD-03. With a pilot on board, the car was flown around for four minutes.
Flying cars need strong power to fly in the sky freely like the airplanes. Sky Drive designed the SD-03 powered by batteries(电池).There are eight motors(发动机)lifting it straight off the ground. The design also produces less pollution.
Although the SD-03's test flight was successful, we may not see flying cars in our daily life anytime soon. ▲ Safety is a big problem. What happens when a motor fails? If a flying car is crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just the people in the car but also people on the ground. That's why the SD-03 has eight motors-some are backups(备用物).Flying cars are also very expensive. The SD-03, for example, is expected to sell for up to $ 500,000.
Yet people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced lots of challenges at first, too. Over time, many of their biggest problems were solved. There are different styles of Taijiquan. Wudang Tai Chi is one of them. Wudang Tai Chi is said to have been invented by Zhang Sanfeng, a Taoist monk. Do you find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning? Have you ever fallen asleep in class? Across the world, bedtimes are getting later and teenagers are sleeping less. Health experts suggest that teenagers should get around nine hours' sleep, but only a third of us get eight hours' sleep.
So what are the reasons for this? Well, stress is an important factor. Like many young people, I find it hard to go to sleep before a big event such as an exam.
Our increasing use of technology may also be to blame. New research at King's College London shows that using electronic products before going to bed makes it twice as likely you'll sleep badly that night. And in the following day, this shortage of sleep can make it difficult to learn well in class.
But while many schools are trying to solve this problem by starting the school day later, some schools in the United States are trying something a bit different--they have set up sleeping areas, where students can sleep for 20 minutes in special chairs. I recently tried one of these chairs and my first thought was that it looked like something from a science-fiction film. It was an egg-shaped chair that reclined(斜躺),with a round lid that could be pulled over on the top. When I lay down on it, the top part slowly covered my head and upper body so that it became dark inside. Some people might find that scary, but I didn't mind, and the gentle music was quite nice. I started to feel sleepy, and that was all I could remember until the lights came on and I woke up. Then, when I got up, I felt more energetic than I'd been before.
Sleepy students can't pay much attention to their study. So the best way is to find ways to make sure they all get enough sleep at night, so that nobody has to go to school feeling tired.

Upcycling is the process of changing old materials into something useful and beautiful.
So, is it the same as recycling? No. Recycling takes materials such as paper or glass, and breaks them down so their base materials can be reused to make a new product. When you upcycle an item, you are not breaking down the material, you are simply refashioning it. For example, you might make shoes out of old tyres. Also, the upcycled item is typically of the same, or even better quality than the original(原来的).
In fact, upcycling isn't a new idea. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when families didn't have enough materials. In those days, things were reshaped and reused over and over until they were no longer useful. For example, an old door can be made into a new dining table.
Nowadays, saving is still a trend(趋势) and a big reason why more and more people upcycle. But an even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is its good influence on the environment. The simple fact of the matter is that upeycling is much better for the planet than throwing things away. When you upcycle, that's one item less that ends upon the waste mountain. Upcycling is also more environmentally-friendly than recycling, which needs less energy or water to break down materials. Instead, it just needs your own creativity and effort. For example, Grace Robinson, from the UK, takes used tea bags and turns them into dresses, shoes and even hats.
There are two ways to support the upcycling movement. Sort through(整理)your recycling bins and create items yourself, or buy ready-made items from upcycled materials. Both ways benefit the environment and in return, you get something that's both attractive and practical.
56.Compared with recycling, upcycling________.
A. can sometimes improve the quality of items
B. needs more energy than recycling
C. needs to break down base materials
D. produces more waste than recycling
57. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph Two refers to________.

people made their living through farming. The ox was used to help plow, cultivate and carry heavy goods. The ox has had a significant place in Chinese culture. After graduating from Yale University, Zhan came back to China. In 1905,the Qing government decided to build a railroad between Beijing and Zhangjiakou.
