It unites tw f his self-declared passins in life: lve f the utdrs, with his lve f ftball. Lesein enjyed walking in the frest, but recgnised his cuntry was experiencing a serius lss f tree cver. ln a blg pst fr WWF Kenya, Lesein revealed that, nce he started the Trees4Gals initiative, he riginally planned t plant ne tree per gal. By 2020, he wanted t take his effrts even further. What started as ne tree planted per gal mushrmed int 11 trees planted per gal. Explaining the reasning behind expanding the tree-planting, he said, "It represents team effrt in ftball and the cntributin by my team. I have managed t hit the 1,000th tree miles tne in the last tw years."
While it's smething f an wn gal t destry the frests and jungles prviding enrmus bidiversity, innvative initiatives like Trees4Gals are an assured way t scre an envirnmentalist hat-trick. Ftball is ppular. It cuts thrugh cultural barriers irrespective f the cuntry it is played in. By increasing the trees planted per gal, with mre such initiatives springing up, even mre will be grwn.
Like a seed, best ideas start small and change int smething that can becme far larger than anticipated. While Lesein cntinues planting 11 trees per gal, Kenyan gvernment is aiming t ensure the planting f 1.8 billin trees t reach 10% frest cverage. The science behind is clear: if 900 millin hectares are devted t half a trillin trees , the wrld can ffset (抵消) half f all carbn released since 1960.

Researchers at Ben-Gurin University f the Negev say that the ppular dieting strategy f serving fd n smaller plates des nt necessarily trick us int eating less.
“Plate size desn't matter as much as we think it des ," ”says Dr. Tzvi Ganel, head f the study in a media release. "Even if yu're hungry and haven't eaten, r are trying t cut back n prtins(份), a serving lks similar whether it fills a smaller plate r is surrunded by empty space n a larger ne.”
Sme dieters may try eating ff f smaller plates, hping that they will feel full because the serving size appears larger n the smaller plate. This strategy is based n the classic Delbuefillusin(错觉), which fund that peple seeing a black circle inside a larger circle perceived the circle t be smaller than when the same sized black circle was placed inside a smaller circle.
Researchers determined that hunger seems t help with visual perceptin f fd prtins. In the experiment, participants wh had eaten recently had a difficult time estimating pizz apprtins that were placed n larger versus smaller trays. But participants wh had nt eaten fr at least three hurs were better able t estimate prtin sizes crrectly.
The authrs remind that their results nly applied t fd sizes. Bth grups f participants perfrmed abut the same when asked t cmpare sizes f black circles and hubcaps(轮毂) placed inside different sized circles. Study authrs say the results suggest that hunger strengthens ur ability t analyze and prcess what we are seeing.
Over the last. decade, restaurants and ther fd businesses have been using prgressively smaller dishes t adapt t the perceptual bias(偏差) that it will reduce fd cnsumptin,” says Ganel. "This study debunks that view. When peple are hungry, especially when dieting, they are less likely t be fled by the plate size, mre likely t realize they are eating less and mre ready t vereating later.”
S dn't kid yurself. Put away the Barbie plates and give it three hurs. Then grab that giant plate and dig in. Yur eyes will chse the right size.
    8. Why d sme dieters switch t smaller dishes?
    A. T seek an elegant lifestyle.
    B. T measure the serving size.
    C. T have the impressin f being full.
    D. T see whether Delbuef illusin is true.
    9. What helps t judge fd sizes accurately?
    A. The black clr.
    B. The size f circles.
    C. The strng need fr fd.
    D. The delicius taste f fd.
    10. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd "debunks” in paragraph 6?
    A. Disapprves.

    D
Yu may never knw why. The email will arrive and reasns ffered fr yur rejectin might be the real nes—r nt. Bsses have always spied n their emplyees, then judged them. Nw the rise f the nline self means the emplyer's eye can travel still farther.
Even befre the pandemic, research fund that 28% f large cmpanies had turned applicants after carrying ut such checks. And it is becming mre ppular: Reed Screening, a large agency, was asked t run ver a third mre scial-media checks in December 2921 than a year earlier. This mnth the gvernment gave the practice apprval when the Department fr Educatin said schls and clleges" shuld cnsider carrying ut an nline search as part f their due diligence(尽职调查)”.
The way screening wrks is simple: Any “prblematic” behavirs will be marked with a red flag. There are laws gverning such nline screening. David Erds, head f the Centre fr Intellectual Prperty and Infrmatin Law, says that cmpanies are suppsed t warn candidates befre screening their scial media and tell them that they have the right t hld back permissin. Sme cmpanies fllw these rules, but thers may nt. As fr the right t refuse, it is hardly practicable. "Wh n earth is--ging t be that persn wh says: 'Hang n a minute, I'm nt happy abut that?" asks Mr Erds. "That itself is likely t be a red flag.”
All agree that the spread f nline screening is alarming, as it is s unfrgiving. Peple may be unable ever t be free f their nline past, says Mr Erds. As indeed sme ftballers, recently punished fr cmments made almst a decade ag when they were but teenagers, have fund t their cst.
Thse within the industry think laws shuld be tightened, with punishment fr illegal act. In the meantime, being very careful is advisable. In talks t university students, Mr Erds warns them what cmpanies will d t their scial media when they apply fr jbs. They are “universally terrified”, he says. And rightly.
    12. What can we infer abut nline screening frm paragraph 2?

    A. They reject the red flags.
    B. They have t submit t it.
    C. They will charge the cmpany.
    D. They pstpne carrying it ut.
    14. What is Mr Erds’ pinin n psting cmments nline?
    A. Cmpanies are tlerant f it.
    B. Its influence is hard t erase.
    C. It shuld be under strict laws.
    D. University students are free t d it.
    15. What culd be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Big Emplyer Is Watching Yu
    B. Fix Yur Eyes n Online Screening
    C. Scial-media Checks Are Arund the Crner
