If this time last year yu had tld me that an exercise bike wuld save me, I’d have insisted yu were wrng. I’d have prtested that I’m nt an athlete by any stretch. My crdinatin is lacking, my endurance is sptty (时好时坏的) and my speed is set squarely (干脆地) n trtise.
In Grade 7, my physical educatin teacher watched me, eyebrw raised, as I tried t jump up and tuch a marker n the wall. “Yu're ding pretty well in my class," he said, “fr smene with n ability at all.”
In high schl, I wasn’t suitable fr a single team. I was bkish and slw, and that self-image (f being better suited t quiet reading and leisurely walks) remained with me fr my entire life.
I discvered running in my 20s, and I enjyed the feeling f quiet accmplishment - withut the fear f letting dwn teammates. I tried yga and enjyed strength training classes, but I always priritized mental pursuits ver physical nes.
It was my mental wellness that finally frced me t rethink my fitness. This winter, I fund myself bwing under the weight f exhaustin. I knew smething had t change. I needed an utlet t release the tensin f mnths f vide cnferencing, n-and-ff sl parenting and virtual schl. A run with my daughter wasn’t ging t cut it.
I settled n an exercise bike with a big screen and the prmise f life-changing results. Since early March, I’ve hardly missed a day n my bike. I’m nt the fastest. But I’m finally learning that mvement isn’t necessarily abut athleticism (运动才能). Mre than anything, it’s abut feeding yur mind. It’s the feeling f accmplishment when yu finish smething hard utside f yur cmfrt zne.
A handful f peple will find glry in athleticism. Fr the rest f us, the reward is mre persnal: better sleep, imprved md and bsted cnfidence. I’m nt destined (注定的) fr the Olympics. But this was never abut ability. That’s what I wish my gym teacher had tld me.
If nly he’d said, “Yu’re ding really well in my class. Lk at yur determinatin.”

A prject funded by the U.S. Atmic Energy Cmmissin shws the return f sea tters(海獭) t Sutheast Alaska ver the past 50 years has been a cnservatin success stry. Erin Fster, a Nearshre Eclgy PhD frm Hakai Institute, suggests that sea tter restratin can enhance the genetic diversity f their habitat.
Sea tters live in castal habitats, including eelgrass(大叶藻) fields, where they feed n rck crabs, ften creating fraging pits (觅食坑) in the eelgrass. Fster lked at the impact f this activity n eelgrass genetic diversity by cmparing eelgrass ecsystems with n tters (pre-disturbance) t thse where tters had been reintrduced (pst-disturbance). It was fund that genetic diversity was higher in the areas with tters. Fster argues that genetic richness is f central imprtance here because it is crucial t resilience (恢复力) and the evlutin f clnal(无性繁殖的) rganisms. Why? The primary mde f expansin fr eelgrass is clnal grwth, but sea tter digging stimulates sexual reprductin and pens up areas fr the seeds t settle.
Even thugh disturbance enhances the diversity and dynamics f many f the wrld’s ecsystems, its influence n genetic diversity remains prly appreciated. The amunt f disturbance that was bserved in the eelgrass fields was relatively lw: abut 5% f the seaflr had fraging pits, althugh the pits last nly fr a shrt time, and visual bservatins likely underestimate the amunt f activity. The disturbance thery, presented in 1978 n the basis f evidence frm trpical frests and cral reefs, is well knwn t eclgists. Early studies shwed that disturbance culd increase species diversity, but researches n the effects f disturbance n genetic diversity are relatively rare.
The rle f sea tters in eelgrass fields prvides insights int hw genetic diversity can change when species interactins are lst—and hw these patterns can be restred. Withut sea tters, genetic diversity appears t decline; when they return, s des diversity. Sea tters were extirpated frm much f their range during intense cmmercial harvests in the 18th and 19th centuries. As their range expanded in the 1960s and 1970s after the disturbance, and their habitats became better understd, sea tters became symblic species in eclgy.
The rle f sea tters in bigechemical prcesses such as the carbn cycle has gained attentin in recent years. During the United Natins Decade n Ecsystem Restratin (2021-2030), mre attentin shuld be paid t rebuilding animal ppulatins and the key eclgical functins they prvide.
28.We can learn frm the passage that ________.

B. eelgrass expands thrugh clnal grwth due t sea tters
C. the return f sea tters can increase genetic diversity f eelgrass
D. eelgrass plays a mre imprtant rle in the ecsystem than sea tters
