I remember back t my seventh year in schl. In my first PE class, the teacher required us t run laps and then hit a sftball. I didn’t d either well. He later tld me that I was “nt athletic”.
The idea that I was “nt athletic” stuck with me fr years. When I started running at the age f 18, I realized running was a battle against myself, nt abut cmpetitin r whether r nt I was athletic. It was all abut the battle against my wn bdy and mind. A test f wills(意志力)!
The night befre my marathn, I dreamt that I culdn’t even find the finish line. I wke up sweating and nervus, but ready t prve smething t myself.
Shrtly after crssing the start line, my she laces(鞋带)became untied. S I stpped t readjust. Nt the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”

I was ne f the final runners t finish. But I finished! And I gt a medal. In fact, I gt the same medal as the ne that the guy wh came in the first place had.

We’ve knwn that sitting fr lng perids f time every day has cuntless health cnsequences(后果), like a higher risk f heart disease. But nw a new study has fund that sitting is als bad fr yur brain.
A study published last week, cnducted by Dr.Prabha Siddarth at the University f Califrnia, shwed that sedentary(久坐不动的)behavir is related t reduced thickness f the medial tempral lbe(中颐叶), a brain area that is critical t learning and memry.
The researchers asked a grup f 35 healthy peple, aged 45 t 70, abut their activity levels and the average number f hurs each day spent sitting and then scanned their brains. They fund that the subjects wh reprted sitting fr lnger perids had the thinnest medial tempral lbes. It means that the mre time yu spend in a chair, the wrse it is fr yur brain health, resulting in pssible damage t learning and memry.
What is als interesting is that this study did nt find a significant relatin between the level f physical activity and thickness f this brain area, suggesting that exercise, even severe(剧烈的 )exercise, may nt be enugh t prtect yu frm the harmful effects f sitting.
It then surprisingly turned ut that yu dn’t even have t mve much t imprve cgnitin(认知); just standing will d the trick(获得成功). Fr example, tw grups f subjects were asked t cmplete a test while either sitting r standing. Participants were asked t name the clr, like the wrd “green” in blue ink. Subjects thinking n their feet beat thse wh sat by 3 millisecnds.
The cgnitive effects f severe physical exercise are well knwn. But the pssibility that standing mre and sitting less imprves brain health culd lwer the standard fr everyne.
I knw, this all runs cunter t(与……背道而驰)received ideas abut deep thught, frm ur grade schl teachers, wh tld us t sit dwn and fcus, t Rdin’s famus “The Thinker”, seated with chin n his hand.
They were wrng. Yu can nw all stand up.
27.What can we infer frm Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4?

B.Severe exercise can greatly imprve ur brain health.
C.Brain health has nthing t d with sedentary behavir.
D.Severe exercise can prtect yu frm the harmful effects f sitting.
28.What is the received idea abut deep thught?
A.We shuld stand while thinking.
B.Sitting is better when we think.
C.Mre exercise can imprve cgnitin.
D.Sitting mre is gd fr ur mental health.
29.The passage mainly tells us _______.
A.peple tend t sit while they are thinking
B.physical exercise can imprve ur brain health
C.standing mre and sitting less can make ur brain healthier
D.sedentary behavir will increase the thickness f the medial tempral lbe
Handwriting is gradually becming a dying art. Mst cllege students type nearly everything. Elementary and high schls acrss the cuntry nw view typing curses as the main chice. But what are we lsing as handwriting lses its significance(重要性)in sciety? It’s brain pwer, accrding t sme studies.
Researchers frm Princetn University and the University f Califrnia cnducted a series f studies t prve the differences between students wh wrte ut their ntes and thse wh typed ntes. Participants(参与者)tk ntes n a lecture using ne f the tw methds and were tested n the material 30 minutes after the lecture and again a week later. The results f the research appeared in Psychlgical Science. The authrs f the study nted that, while past studies n this tpic tended t fcus n the distractins(干扰)that resulted frm using a cmputer, in this study, participants were using the laptps nly t take ntes. And handwriting still emerged as(成为)the champin.
That’s nt t say that typing desn’t have its benefits. Clearvue Health recently tk a deep dive int the findings f a study t assess prs and cns(评估利弊)f writing and typing. The typists culd cpy dwn significantly mre wrds than the writers. But while mre f the lecture’s cntent was retained in the cmputer when typing. The tests that the participants tk prved this. On the test 30 minutes after the lecture, typists and writers did mre r less equally well n questins abut the basic facts f the lecture, but typists faltered(结巴)when it came t mre cnceptual questins. Students wh take handwritten ntes need t quickly prcess the lessn and rewrite it in a way they can understand, giving them an advantage in remembering new cncepts(概念)in the lng term.
As fr the later quiz, well, the results were similar. Students with handwritten ntes were able t remember and still understand the cncepts f the lecture after a week had passed. These participants were als mre pen t understanding new ideas. Clearly, writing by hand can make yu smarter.
Cmputers aren’t ging away anytime sn, but that desn’t mean paper ntebks need t becme bslete. If yur gal is t be able t set dwn facts, the efficiency f typing might best benefit yu. But when it cmes t truly dissecting(剖析)infrmatin, truly learning frm it in the sense f making cnnectins between analyzing the material, and retaining it in the lng run, writing by hand is a better chice.
30.What can we knw abut the studies in Paragraph 2?
A.The studies were abut the advantages f taking ntes.
B.Participants used tw methds t take ntes at the same time.
C.The results f the studies were published in Psychlgical Science.
D.The studies were nly cnducted by researchers frm Princetn University.
31.What can be inferred abut typists frm Paragraph 3?
A.They kept mre cntents f a lecture in their mind when typing.
B.They culd cpy dwn mre cntents f a lecture than writers.
C.They culd remember new cncepts fr a lng time by typing.
D.They did better n questins abut the facts f the lecture than writers.
32.The wrd “bslete” in the last paragraph prbably means “_________”.
A.ut f shapeB.ut f rderC.ut f cntrlD.ut f date
33.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Why Handwriting Makes Yu Smarter
B.Why Typing Has Becme S Widespread
C.Why Typists Take Ntes Effectively
D.Why Writers Have Lng Term Memry
